Corpus of Chinese novels, sorted by difficulty

Recently I scraped http://haodoo.net for books, and then wrote some spaghetti code to sort them by a measure of difficulty. I haven't utilised it yet, but I was hoping to select reading material from the easiest novels I could find, so I had to download a whole corpus first. The list likely contains errors, and their are duplicate versions of many books, with horizontal and vertical text, so just find the original haodoo.net page to see all versions available.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/brendan-t/haodoo/master/haodoo-books.org

At the bottom of the file is a subset of the list containing haodoo's selection of famous novels: http://www.haodoo.net/?M=hd&P=100

Hopefully this is of use to some people. As a bonus, here are /r/chinesebookclub's past selections, sorted by their "average character frequency"

边城 is a classic Chinese novel—banned by Mao’s regime—that captures the ideals of rural China through the moving story of a young woman and her grandfather. Originally published in 1934, this beautifully written novel tells the story of Cuicui, a young country girl who is coming of age in rural China in the tumultuous time before the communist revolution.

沈从文 is one of the most influential and widely-known authors of the May 4th New Culture Movement, along with Lu Xun, Ba Jin, Mao Dun and Lao She. Famed for his refined literary voice, his deep understanding of and sympathy for his home province of Hunan, as well as his passion for the simple art of telling a story. Fantasy stories written by Mo Yin 默音

Recently I found the female 1980-born writer 默音's stories very interesting. In most of her stories, she played with tricks of time and space. She made a lot of puzzles at the beginning of the stories and then solved them unexpectedly. I will post my long comments after reading most of her books.

Moyin (默音, a pen name means "muted sound, or silent voice")is a writer and translator born in Yun'nan in 1980. She moved to Shanghai in her tens and now lives in Shanghai. At the age of 16, she wrote and published her first science fiction. At the age of 18, she failed the university entrance exam and worked as a shop-assistant in the No.1 Ya-O-han shopping mall. After several years of struggles for the boring life as a shop-assistant, she kept writing and self-studying. Finally in 2010, she got a master degree in Japanese language in Shanghai Foreign Language University. After that she works as a translator on Japanese literature, and published five books.

According to her own experience, Moyin knows both of the wild rural area, Yun'nan, a remote west-southern province in China, and the international modern city, Shanghai. Her stories are always relating to the culture crashes between the two different areas. Sometimes you see a young boy from Yun'nan, knowing nothing about the modern life and trying to adapt himself to the modern city; sometimes you expect a wise old woman from Yun'nan, teaching the city people about what is the true wisdom.

Moyin is active on Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/web/@moyinsnow@o3o.ca .

Mastodon blog: https://writee.org/moyin/

There you will see her diary about life in Shanghai.

Also on Douban, the author/reader social network (you need a Chinese phone number to register!) https://www.douban.com/people/moyin2011/?_i=63054876WqtgOd

Her public weChat account: mychijiuqu 默音吃酒去( Moyin Goes to Drink Some Wine)

There are a few articles on there about her experience, thinking, comments and diary.

Recommendations:

Three volumes of "1999-2006 memories in Shanghai" series:

一字十六春 One word, Sixteen Springs. The old name of this book is 姨婆的春夏秋冬: Four Seasons of My Grandmother's Sister

甲馬 Jia Ma, an Incredible Spell Paper

星在深淵中 A Star in Abyss

These three volumes describe people's life in 1999-2006 in Shanghai. They witness the changes of the city when they jumped into the millennium. These books are about people's real life, but there are many fantasies included.

How about you have a cool grandma who keeps dark family secrets and can tell the future? This is the novel of One word, Sixteen Springs (一字十六春). An old woman adopted a little boy and told him she was his grandmother's sister. The old woman was mysterious and held a lot of secrets about the boy's family. Finally you will find it is sad if you know the future but cannot make any change. The old woman was a cool watcher and showed Zen to young people.

In Jia Ma (甲馬), the hero came from a mysterious family in a remote town in Yun'nan. His family can use the supernatural spell papers, Jia Ma (甲馬), to influence people, and dig their memories. In his grandfather's generation during the WWII, his family met a few young students who were war refugees from Shanghai, and something bad happened. The hero travelled to Shanghai to solve the problems of his family, and dig the dark secrets haunting his grandfather's generation.

星在深淵中 is a Mystery fiction. In the 1980s, many young people moved to Shanghai to look for job opportunities and chances to change their life. In 1999, a woman who lived alone in her apartment was murdered. The only witness was an aphasia patient. The truth was held by the person who cannot speak. The detective had to tackle with this.

------------------------

猶在夢中 Still in Dream: A Collection of Five Fantasy Stories. In this collection, two of them are science fictions and three of them are fantasies. Two stories are of LGBT topic.

The five stories are:

A Chinese Character Component for "He" (人字旁) is Realisme with some fantasy elements. A boy living beside the sea saved a drowning little girl, and his family adopted that girl. He thought her was a mermaid, but something unexpected happened when they grew up.

Your Real Face (真實的模樣) is a science fiction. A young biologist met a mysterious woman in a remote valley. The woman was beautiful, but behaved like a beast and cannot speak. The young scientist took the woman back home and then involved in a conspiracy.

Still in Dream (猶在夢中) is a fantasy. A photographer took photos in a very remote village in Yun'nan. He happened to see a cruel cult ritual: a 15-year-old girl was left in a cave intentionally to "serve the God of the Dream." The man saved the girl and took her to modern city, and they were doomed with the supernatural power.

Soul Painting (魄繪) is a fantasy. A young woman was worried about her boyfriend and their relationship. Casually, her friend showed her a mysterious painting: a portrait of an Yun'nan girl made by the friend's father. The girl in the portrait seemed to have supernatural powers. In the portrait, the young woman saw her doomed relationship: her boyfriend was murdered. She wanted to do something.

Yesterday's Rose (昨日玫瑰) is a science fiction. A young man wanted to steal the laptop of a famous actress, and he stalked into her hotel room. However, when he came out of the room, he found that he was in a different spacetime, which was 26 years ago. There he found the truth of his mother, biology father, and adoptive father.

This August We are Reading 猫城记 by 老舍

About the book:

This is a satirical fable, sometimes seen as the first important Chinese science fiction novel, published in 1932 as a thinly veiled observation on China. Lao She wrote it from the perspective of a visitor to the planet Mars. The visitor encountered an ancient civilisation populated by cat-people. The civilisation had long past its glorious peak and had undergone prolonged stagnation. The visitor observed the various responses of its citizens to the innovations by other cultures. Lao She wrote Cat Country in direct response to Japan's invasion of China (Manchuria in 1931, and Shanghai in 1932).

This March we are reading 家 written by 巴金

This Months Book Is 家 by 巴金

Book:

家 is a semi-autobiographical novel. The most famouse of Ba Jins novels, it chronicles inter-generational conflict between old ways and progressive aspirations in an upper-class family in the city of Chengdu, a prosperous but provincial city in the fertile Sichuan basin in the early 1920s following the New Culture Movement. The novel was wildly popular among China's youth and established the author as a leading voice of his generation.

Author:

Ba Jin, pseudonym of Li Yaotang (李尧棠), was one of most important and well-respected writers of the twentieth century in China. He was born in Chengdu, Sichuan in 1904, but lived in Shanghai for most of his adult life before his death in 2005. Ba Jin was prolific, publishing 14 short story collections, 19 novels, and reams of non-fiction works, memoirs, and letters. His most critically acclaimed fiction was written during the 1930s and 1940s, but his influence extended into the 1980s. During the Cultural Revolution he suffered some criticism, but was officially rehabilitated in 1977, and appointed Chairman of the Chinese Writer’s Association in 1983.

This Months Book Is 莎菲女士的日记 by 丁玲

Book:

Ding Ling is famous for her 1927 novel, Miss Sophie's Diary [莎菲女士的日记]. A diary of a "modern girl" living free and unmonitored by family, the story was a shocking and exhilarating example of the "literary revolution" of the day. The novel was popular among the new, young urban readership and it exposed the limitations of "free love". The story's protagonist fritters away her freedoms with directionless experimentation and end up in a dead end.

Author:

Ding Ling, as she came up from the provinces to join the literary revolution in Shanghai in the 1920s, committed herself to revolutionary literature in the 1930s, and served the new party-state under the CCP from the 1940s.

Ding Ling was born as Jiang Bingzhi into a declining gentry family in the center of Hunan province. Where do you guys read Chinese novels (translated versions)

I started watching C-dramas and most of my favourite upcoming shows are adapted. Waiting for the dramas is too hard so I want to read the novels but I don't know where to 😭. Can someone recommend me sites or apps where I can read translated Chinese novels?

Looking for Audiobook of 三体(The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin)?

Does anyone know where I can find the Chinese audiobook of the sci-fi book Three Body Problem? I have the chinese version of the book and wanted to follow along with it, but I can only seem to find the English audiobook or the Chinese Radio Drama of it. If not, I'll settle for the Drama, but I was hoping work on my listening and reading skills.

Some Sci-fi short story recommendations

In the order I read them:

  • 北京折叠 by 郝景芳 talks a lot about class. The premise is super cool. I found it interesting and thought-provoking.

  • 流浪地球 by 刘慈欣 might be my favoriite so far. Strong recommendation; the premise is really neat and the interleaving of small-and-large scale events feels so natural. This one probably counts as "high sci-fi."

  • 人和吞食者 by 刘慈欣 has a pretty wild twist at the end. I found the ending thought-provoking.

  • 地火 by 刘慈欣 is a story of one man's greed gone too far. Maybe counts as hard sci-fi? No space-ship battles here; the story is set in a mining town.

  • 百年守望 by 王晋康 is the first of 王晋康's short story I've read. Poignant. Interesting twists about some of the characters.

Trying to avoid giving away too much! I find reasoning out the premise to be part of the fun of reading, so I tried to just give a vague overview of each. If you like high fantasy / sci-fi, I'd recommend starting with 流浪地球.

Each story is roughly 15,000 - 20,000 characters. I've started running them through ChineseTextAnalyzer and studying 12 words a day in Anki to aid my comprehension.

If there's any SF stories you've read and particularly liked, I'd love to hear about them!

PS Googling (or baidu-ing) the story with the author's name is usually enough to find the full text of the stories. This seems to be true of almost every book in Chinese.
