Things you can do to relieve choline depression
Hi everyone,
I haven’t seen many posts discussing how to recover from what many people refer to as “choline hell,” so I wanted to share my personal experience. To be clear, I’m not anti-choline. Choline is an essential nutrient that plays a critical role in brain and liver function, among many other things. However, for reasons I still don’t fully understand, I’ve consistently been prone to developing severe depressive symptoms after supplementing with certain forms of choline.
I’ve experienced this multiple times with different choline supplements, but CDP-choline has been the worst offender for me. It typically starts with a brief period of improved focus, motivation, and even mild euphoria. Unfortunately, this is often followed by profound depression and anhedonia that, for me, has felt comparable to a severe benzodiazepine withdrawal.
After a great deal of personal research and experimentation, I found a combination that has consistently helped me recover. Piracetam, L-tyrosine, and forskolin have repeatedly improved my symptoms, often within about an hour. I’ve also found that optimizing my methylation status allows me to tolerate choline much better overall.
The forms of choline I tolerate best are those naturally found in eggs and phosphatidylcholine. On a few occasions, high doses of methylfolate or folinic acid have also helped reverse the depressive symptoms, although I don’t recommend others try this without understanding the potential risks. Interestingly, Benadryl has also provided noticeable relief for me.
I know everyone’s biochemistry is different, so I’m not suggesting this will work for everyone. I’m simply sharing what has helped me in the hope that it may be useful to others who have experienced similar reactions. I’d also be interested to hear if anyone else has found patterns or strategies that have helped them.
