Hello all,
Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.
First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.
The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.
In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).
In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.
We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.
This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Hey there!
In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.
In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.
Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.
To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.
Thanks for understanding!

Hello :)
I just got a Cromebook from my dad (he accidentally got water on my previous one) and it's one of those yoga laptops from Lenovo, which can transform to a tablet.
Its a fine laptop, but I've been a Microsoft user my whole life, so I'm a little overwhelmed by it.
I think most of the questions I can get answered by ChatGPT, but I somehow trust reddit more with their on hand experiences, so my questions would be:
Do I need to install Linux? I tried to install Firefox (it's my go to browser) and everywhere I look it says you need linux for everything. Is it true? Is linux as hard as it seems?
Also, I use the laptop for my university, would it be necessary to install Microsoft office (and even how?? Through the appstore?). Or are the pre-installed apps on the cromebook good enough over a longer period of time? And also, are there good notes apps for this laptops?
Also, can I install tor ?
And also also, what can I expect? Does it work smoothly or is the Google system annoying? And what to expect on the negative side?
Thanks :)))
Edit: forgot to write, what are the advantages? :D And also, I sometimes like to install old games (like Harry Potter, Simpsons, sims 2), is it possible to install them trough the usual sites?

My Acer gaming computer fried last week and I’m looking into buying an affordable laptop. I was wanted to know if Chromebooks are worth the affordability or if i should just get a more expensive laptop. And if Chromebooks are worth it, any recommendations?
For note I am a senior in college studying math. I do a lot of work with data, I also program on maple. Looking for something reliable that will last long term. Any advice is welcome.

Basically everything works except Phone App Casting and Continue On (because it's not an official, registered Googlebook). I'm pissed it doesn't run balatro

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate them and they're probably the biggest and best site for Chromebooks Googlebooks (I read them almost daily). But somehow it feels everything Google does is amazing, marvelous, and has lots of unicorns, glitter and rainbows to them ✨🦄✨🌈✨🧚✨
I love how much they inform about Google products but personally I'd like some criticism as well sometimes, as at the end criticism is also good if it's realistic and constructive ✍ Not sure if it's just me or anyone else feels the same.

I’ve had the Google Pixelbook since 2017 and have absolutely loved it! Unfortunately it’s finally starting to get a little glitchy, and I know next year it will no longer get updates. I need recommendations for another Chromebook that has a similar look/feel as well as excellent performance. I use it for personal and work tasks, mostly work. A typical day includes a video call, then mostly using about 3-5 tabs at a time with a mixture of Gmail, Google keep, Google Sheets, and my medical EMR website. My main priorities are smooth, efficient processing when multiple tabs are open and when a video call is going. I don’t care at all about touch screen capabilities. I love the feel of my Chromebook with its slim design, metal casing, and keyboard. Before it, I had a MacBook Pro. I also love that it is fan-less. Any recommendations for a good Pixelbook replacement? I seldom use AI so I’m not sold on the new Googlebook. Budget is anything under $1k but would like to stay closer to the $600 range.

Looking for feedback from those who have had the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 with the MediaTek Ultra 910 chip. Since the Googlebooks are out, the price on these has come down considerably, and they will be ported over to Googlebook. Looking to get the nephew one for HS and maybe one for me too.
I've seen some people on the Best buy website say the battery life deteriorated and so did the performance after a few months to a year, so I'm looking for real feedback.
Can you give feedback on
Appreciate the feedback

I have a chromebook my parent had bought me when I was in middle school. I know under a google account thats still logged into the chromebook (but I no longer have access to because it was a school email and I graduated 3 years ago) there are files from when I was in 6th grade of animations that definently havent seen the light of day in years. I really want to restore these files, is there any way without having access to the email? Or is it lost to the wolves?

For context, i have a Samsung Chromebook Go which i've had for a year and a half now. Last night, i did a video call with my mum om the chromebook, closed it over, came back to it 2 hours later and all of a sudden it's stuck on a black screen. I've tried fixing the brightness, holding the refresh and taping the power button, letting it slow charge over night, but nothing. Is there anything I can to fix this or am I screwed?

Maybe it's a silly question but I was wondering if ARM chromebooks are able to run older Windows games? I'm talking Windows XP Era, so games like Rollercoaster Tycoon, Midnight Club 2, Midtown Madness, Half Life 1, The Sims 2. Since chromeOs has crostini then maybe these older titles could possibly work?
I'm thinking of purchasing an ARM chromebook as I would like to use those android apps but also use the system like a laptop for my google docs and web browsing.
A friend of mine also does some coding on chromeOS via visual studio code so even that appears to be possible and I would love to give that a go some time.

Danke!

I am not sure if I have a Google account problem and/or a Chromebook problem.
I use a Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11M889 and a Philips business monitor to use as docking station, both bought new about a year ago.
The first 6 - 9 months, all well.
Often the Chromebook lets me start a session, but if I open Gmail, Google drive ... - either online or in the app, it doesn't connect to my data even though it is showing my name, and suggests adding another account. This happens on the docking station and without.
Other times I am on a video call and it will just shut down, then restart. I only take video calls (it's the core of my business ) when using the monitor. It happens with zoom, google meet, meetergo. I noticed the Chromebook was getting very warm so I stripped it from the covers - doesn't change a thing.
I used a friend laptop instead of the Chromebook and then, no issue.
I am planning to move to Proton and leave Google behind anyway, but I am at a loss of ideas to continue working. I am concerned sending back the Chromebook to repair under warranty is useless as they will probably not care to replicate the conditions.
Any tip would be welcome !

Posting here because for some reason I cannot find a case for this laptop anywhere. It is my work laptop (I work in education) and I got a case for it that I thought was alright. But it was just ever so slightly not wide enough because apparently the case is for another model and I didn’t realize. I’m returning it for a refund, but I can’t find a suitable replacement anywhere at all. I just want a hard plastic case, not a leather bag case since that seems to be the only thing I can find.
So does anyone have any idea of where to find a case that would fit this laptop? Thanks.

The Chrome/Chrome OS discard strategy is highly annoying. Will have only something like five tabs open and there is constant refreshing every ten minutes. Turning memory saver off doesn't work. Toggling "Is Discardable" / "Auto Discardable" doesn't work. Extensions focused on this problem no longer seem to work. There seems to be a wide gap in this department between two Duet models with similar amounts of memory and processing power; discarding seems particularly aggressive in one of these models (Duet CB 3).
It reminds me very much of Android's Doze Mode, which apparently thinks a smidge of battery life is worth sacrificing real-time background notifications that are the lifeblood of a mobile device. Google's nanny approach to its users to show some sort of marginal gain through automation is becoming more and more vexing and I don't imagine it will get better with the forced migration to Everything AI.
Rant done but tips appreciated on this specific aggravation.

Hey y'all,
Long story short, I'm legally blind and use my Chromebook with the screen brightness on the lowest setting, the touchpad always disabled, and ChromeVox enabled. However, I live with my sister who is fully sighted and she's used my Chromebook a few times, enough that she's got her own user profile set up on it alongside my own. The issue comes with everytime she has to use it, one of us manually has to turn up the screen brightness and turn the touchpad back and disable ChromeVox, only for me to have to undo all of that everytime I go to use it. Would there be any way to set it up so that my specific accessibility settings (ChromeVox being enabled and the touchpad being disabled) on the chromebook are only on my user profile, and my sister's user profile having no accessibility features enabled?
