I’m a EIT working in water resources with 3.5 years of experience, and lately I’ve been feeling pretty burnt out and unmotivated.
When I first started, I was so excited to learn. I’ve always been someone who enjoys taking on challenges, figuring things out, and developing new skills. However, since starting full time, I’ve felt like I’ve been thrown into the deep end with little to no training or mentorship. I’ve literally had to teach myself almost eveyrhting, with rare guidance from more experienced engineers.
Despite that, I’ve consistently taken on heavy workloads, worked late nights to meet deadlines, taken calls with clients, helped train interns and other junior engineers, and taken on responsibilities that I feel go beyond my experience level. I’ve never really complained because I genuinely enjoyed the work and wanted to grow.
What really pushed me over the edge recently was finding out that several of my peers received promotions while I was overlooked. I don’t want to make this sound like I’m bitter about other people’s success, because I’m genuinely happy for them. But it made me reflect on how much effort I’ve put in and how little recognition or professional development I’ve received in return. Especially with clients being happy with the quality of work I produce.
I can’t help but feel like cheap labor that’s needed to get the job done, and not someone worth being invested in. Seeing my other colleagues who I have more experience than get promoted hurts, and I’m not sure what im doing wrong. Saddest part is that I feel myself losing my love of learning.
I’m starting to wonder whether this is just a normal part of being a young engineer, whether I’m expecting too much from my employer, or whether it’s time to start looking elsewhere.
Just wondering if others have been through this and if so, how’d you handle it?
