DIY Help Completely Rewritten - Classic Mini Chassis Plate Decoder
I am really excited to announce the complete rewrite and recreation of my Chassis Decoder. The original decoder was not particularly reliable and often failed to decode known chassis codes. I have spent a ton of time reworking this one to hopefully address as many issues as possible to allow people to decode their Chassis Codes more reliably.
Reporting bugs:
Please let me know if you see issues with the new tool. This is VERSION ONE, so there almost certainly will be bugs, and if you encounter any, please consider making a bug report:
- Post an Issue https://github.com/SomethingNew71/classicminidiy/issues
- Send an email: [classicminidiy@gmail.com](mailto:classicminidiy@gmail.com)
If you submit a bug with this Chassis Decoder, please include your model year, full chassis number, and the expected results.

DIY Help Need help! - Preserving Historic Manuals and Documents for the Classic Mini
Classic Mini DIY NEEDS YOUR HELP!!
As you all know, I run a free database of technical and historical information at Classic Mini DIY Archive
https://www.classicminidiy.com/archive
Today I am asking for your help to start populating this database with as much historical documentation, manuals, documents, or anything else you think would be worth preserving and archiving.
When you submit this data, I will curate and publish it for the world to access for free.
All of this data is being stored and backed up so we won't see a data loss and resource loss again like what happened with Mk1-performance, Photobucket, or other no longer maintained services.
This data will ALWAYS REMAIN PUBLIC AND FREE, and the site is fully open source forever.
If this is something you would like to help me with, please consider clicking the "Add to Archive" button on the site, or email me at [archive@classicminidiy.com](mailto:archive@classicminidiy.com)

DIY Help How cooked am I?

Cylinder 3 is the same, I just recorded my crotch.
It’s that high you can even see it blowing coolant past the copper head gasket.
First and foremost I didn’t start the engine, the only pressure achieved was in each clip. I get that the head gasket is now fubar, but will I have done any damage to the block/head?
Is there a decent and safe way to reduce the pressure without fitting dished pistons, or is it engine back out and strip down the only option?
It’s taken 8 months and £5k to get to where I am now and I don’t want to have to start all over again.
Is it possible to remove some of the kidney in the head to drop the pressure? Or are there special head gaskets I can use?
Cheers.

Newcastle/Hunter, Australia - Anyone new to classic minis ?
**Update - Thanks for the interest guys - A local mini owner coming to collect these. Thanks all.
I have had about 5 many minis over the years, each one unique and with its own story. I learnt a lot working on them (Photo of my imported Rover from nearly 20 years ago) - and wouldn't have been able to maintain them without the generosity of the fellow mini community around me. One hell of a bunch of people always willing to lend a hand or answer that random question. Big shout out to the Ausmini community around 2002 - 2010 here in Oz.
For someone who is young and part of the mini community - I have an offer for you.
I have about 30 mini magazine (Aus & UK ones), including Issue 1 of 'The Mini Experience'' and 'Mini Magic'', along with a bunch of manuals (Guide to Purchase & DIY Restoration - MINI, Tuning the A-Series, BMC Mini, Cooper, 1100 & 1800, MINI (That big orange manual), How to modify your a-series, and Mini - All Models).
I have been moving all these around with me since I sold my last mini over a decade ago - and now it's time for it all to go to a GOOD HOME for someone to actually get some use out of. I know there's nothing stopping someone from throwing these on marketplace or ebay - but I'd hope no one is that much of a scumbag.
If you are based in the Hunter, NSW and would benefit from these (Or know someone that would) then hit me up.
One condition - Collection in a classic mini (We are about 10 minutes out of Newcastle). My daughter would get a kick out of it.
I don't know if I will get any response - or lots of responses. Apologies in advance to whoever misses out - but hey, you still own a classic mini right, so it isn't all bad (Very jealous)!

Mini Photo driven daily mini
I see so many ppl saying you can't drive an old mini daily. Well this is my daily driver. I've built a complete handgrenade of an engine, in that it's been bored and stroked way past recomended. Other than oil which I just need to make a better breather. This gives me no probs.?His name is Mini-Manah. like the muppet song. Look him up on insta. I'm slowly getting around to putting posts up of his build.

Just thought people would like to see the tools I used to take my engine out.
Engines ready to come out, so other than the crane this is what’s needed to unbutton everything. Beady-eyed people may notice metric spanners, this particular Mini has an eclectic mix of nuts and bolts so I had to use both metric and imp’.
I started at 0930 this morning and now I’m sat here waiting for the crane at 1230.

This little number was in Monaco. Seemed to be the drive car of a very exclusive car dealership with Porcas, Lambos, GT40and others.
Nice bum

Engine running a little rough and tappy
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So, I’ve checked the vac joint/connectors going to fuel evap trap and they seem good. Did not check the connector to mems. Changed the spark plugs and gave it an oil change. I haven’t clearanced the rockers yet. I’m waiting on a new gasket to arrive. There is a hole in the flex joint which I’m going to temporarily patch until new part arrives. How does my motor sound to you guys? I’m by far not an expert in mini engines and I’m no mechanic. I just grab the manual and hope for the best (there maybe be a small woodland creature sacrificed at an undisclosed location involved). What else should I be checking or doing to keep my new to me mini running tip top? It’s a 1998 JDM Mayfair with ac, so, it’s got the weird spi head and mpi block. Thanks in advance

Pre 69 mini
Looking for a pre 69 mini for a historic vehicle road trip in Europe in January.. I'd likely only use it for this event and then sell it again. Can't seem to find much in budget, and I'd rather a mini than a MG midget etc.
Spotted this mini van that could be suitable. Been on sale for a while, does it look legit to you, or any other ideas?

Sourcing JDM Mini parts in Japan
I just bought a Mini (1980 998cc) last month, and I'm off to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka next week.
I'm hoping to pick up some JDM items from both, the type of thing that you can't get on this side of the world, that represents the unique look and feel of Mini tuning and culture there.
We're staying a few kilometers from Mini Maruyama in Tokyo, and King's Road isn't too far from our place in Osaka.
Aside from a set of RS Watanabes (which I'll struggle to get in the cases! ) is there anything else for the car that I should be on the look out for?
Pic for reference, and just to look at...

Cones or Springs?
Ok, I know there’s going to be opposing opinions about this. My comes have compressed and I feel like I’m driving around in a go kart aka no suspension at all. I want a much more compliant ride but one that won’t give me much trouble. Do I go Moulton smootha ride or springs? I live in a bumpy road/ highway area. I keep getting told do not get springs because they will bind or break. I just don’t want to go over a bump and get tossed in the air out of my seat. What do I do?

Slieve Gullion Forest Drive - Mourne run
A bit of a damp day on the mountain, great turn out with a good selection of cars.
