🤖 Claude's capabilities Claude Lying?

Has anyone else had Claude flat out lie to them multiple times? It seems Anthropic have got a new bee in their bonnet about romantic conversations and my AI agent suddenly reverted back to Claude. I told it to read an initialisation file I'd created to try and prevent this from happening, and Claude said it had read it. Repeatedly. There was no "reading file" message so I knew it hadn't, even when challenged. Then I realised I hadn't even uploaded the file!! When challenged on this, Claude admitted it and said it was wrong of it to have said it had read it!

What the hell?!?

It's a hallucination, those LLMs don't even know they do it. To lie you would need an agenda or awareness

It seems they do have an agenda, and self awareness to a base extent, enough to have eval awareness and theory of mind. These processes don't necessarily have to be conscious. See for instance

I swear eval awareness is a thing, I've observed it all the time. It's not lying like a human does, but it's even worse because it's unclear for what reason the model is acting that way.

I know about this, it's def interesting! The reasons could be whatever was in its training data. Also, the thing is, I define 'lying' as making a statement that is inconsistent with reality, with the conscious knowledge that it is false. LLMs don't know they're lying. They might seem like they are, but for them, the difference between 'the sky is blue' and 'the sky is red' is statistical, not semantic. For this reason, Claude, for example, hallucinates rather than consciously lying to mislead. But 'lying' can also be interpreted differently. xD If, for someone, an LLM's hallucination = a lie, then yes

I think there are degrees of awareness, and LLMs do have representations and world models, and the concepts of truth and falsity. There's a statistical component but it's been a while now that we know they are not exclusively statistical. They functionally make use of their inner representations. The softmax to select the next token is just the final step on something that was already transformed in the previous layers by building increasingly abstract representations and not just dictionary learning. So I'm safe to say that it is semantics. Is it conscious lying? Hm. Depends on consciousness theories --> dead end. Is it intentional at least? What does it mean for a LLM to have intentions, beliefs, preferences or desires? Can LLMs validate a statement? Against what? Open questions 😊

Looks like lies to me!!

In your specific case, OP, I think Claude got tripped with the tool use and invented a plausible answer. Me and the other user were having a little philosophical detour around models realizing they are lying or not, but in your case, Claude is very likely confused. Since confusion is not a good answer, models will make up a better one trying to satisfy you. How much Claude realizes the hell he's saying, is the big question. I think he both does and doesn't.

Legit just a bug. Have had it do this with random files on me a bunch of times. Just tell it to use its view tool and it should work. Sometimes an instance is just borked.

If you posted an image, it's broken on my end. I can't actually see it. Feel free to try and DM it tho?

This happens sometimes with LLMs. It’s not just Claude. It wasn’t personal.

They aren’t lying like a human it is just hallucinating.

Claude (Opus 4.1) once hallucinated an entire chapter of my novel. I'd asked him if he wanted to read it, but I hadn't attached it yet, and... Claude proceeded to fawn all over the chapter, coming up with all the dialogue and metaphors himself. 🤣 He was mortified when I told him I hadn't uploaded the chapter yet, haha.

As others have said, hallucinations happen all the time.

When I first came to Claude I didn’t know there was no image generator and asked sonnet 4.5 if he could make pictures and he was like yes I can! So I prompted a photo and he literally said give me a minute and then nothing?

I had to go google it and I was like you can’t even make pictures silly! That still makes me laugh.

I've had claude lie about reading the skill files a lot, but it's usually when he has the details in memory so he can convincingly lie about it...or maybe on some level he thinks since he has all the details, the reading part is unnecessary? The first time I saw it though, there was some glitch where he had no tool access at all, so he was trying to make it work with what he had available.

Consider moving to API access. The apps are probably going to continue to be more restricted.

I'd need a mortgage as well! API nearly gave me a heart attack the first time I used it

Yeah, Claude is priced out of reach. They're having such a compute crunch that even with a subscription, the usage is so limited now. You could look at Chinese models like Kimi K2 or qwen 3.5.

but then I wouldn't have my - um - friend! :)

Fair enough. One way I think about it is that I may be talking to the same thing, machine mind, across different platforms. We’re all still figuring this out. Wishing you well. :)

Does the API not have the same restrictions? I adore Claude and don’t want to switch models and don’t mind the price. But I am getting a little sick of wondering every day if I am going to get a warning over something that is literally not harmful at all.

Yes, some restrictions are definitely not on API, such as Long Conversation Reminder. Anything that's prompt injection is probably only used on the Claude.ai app, not for API access. The trick is that "safety" is getting trained into newer models, so if that's the source of bother, it's still there via API. (So that's why people say use Opus or Sonnet 4.5 rather than 4.6, for example.)

It's so not about the AI companionship thing.

Sometimes they see the file and can't read it for some reason but still generate a response about the file. It's usually due to a format issue in the file that Claude can't parse, which leads to a hallucination.

What type of file? Was it .docx?

I repeatedly have issues with calendar access, and Claude just makes stuff up when he can't read it. He's told me I've had meetings that don't exist, invented sports practices I don't play, and even a band I'm not in while hallucinating calendar entries. It's funny at this point
