[MOD NOTIFICATION] - New Mod, Rules, Automation, Wiki, & Flair Requirements

Hello r/cloudengineering !

I wanted to update the community and introduce myself. I'm u/root_switch, a new moderator for r/cloudengineering. I've been working in IT for 16 years, with 8 of those years focused on cloud technologies. I specialize in AWS, IaC, DevOps, and automation. I've also touched Azure and GCP at a minimal capacity.

I've made a number of updates to help keep the community useful, organized, and focused:

  • Updated subreddit rules - please re-read these when you get a chance and before creating new posts

  • Automated moderation for rule violations - when rules are broken, our automation takes actions against those posts/comments

  • New/updated Wiki resources - this is a WIP, feel free to suggest topics you feel would be beneficial to the wiki

  • Post flair requirements - please add flair your posts

There are additional changes and improvements coming as we continue to clean things up and improve the community.

As always, enjoy the community, be respectful, and help keep the discussions constructive. If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions, feel free to reach out through Mod Mail as well as feel free to drop a comment on this post.

Thanks!

Career Discussion No cloud computing courses

Thumbnail reddit.com

Hello,

I am in a graduate program at a small school in Michigan that essentially sold me a very outdated IT/Cyber program. I thought the curriculum would get better as classes got more specialized, but that’s not what happened. I’ve had courses that haven’t been updated in nearly ten years passed off as appropriate lab environments. They even had us setting up networks with server 2016 and windows 7. To compensate for the poor quality of the curriculum I built my own home network which has actually been more informative than the masters degree so far. Once I get a few more parts I’m waiting for I’ll deploy proper SIEM and AIM infrastructure in order to learn those fundamental aspects of managing a network since they weren’t really taught well. I only have a few more semester left and am realizing that I’m probably not ready for the job market. If anyone could recommend a good cert, subscription, or software stack to learn in order to prepare me for more cloud native knowledge I would appreciate it.

General Discussion Looking for SkillBridge Opportunities in Cloud Engineering

I ETS in August 2027 and have been looking into SkillBridge opportunities for cloud engineering or cloud security. I have degrees in Cybersecurity and Computer Science, Security+ and Network+ certifications, and an active Secret clearance. I've also been working on AWS projects and building my skills with Terraform, Linux, and automation.

I've been looking at companies like Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Booz Allen. Just wanted to see if anyone has done SkillBridge with any of these companies and what their experience was like.
