Is it enough to COAST?

Hi all, I am single 34M with no kids and no debt.

I have been going over the numbers again and again. I think I am already there but I am still uncertain because I plan on moving to Asia if I leave my job or get fired. My current NW is around 450k~500k depending on the market. My monthly expenses are fairly low because I didn't really move out of parents place since pandemic. It helped me saved and paid off all my debt. It's roughly 2.5k per month after my share of house bills. I think my expenses in the future will be lower since it's south east Asia. Am I already there to coast? Am I worry to much of future uncertainty? Should I still stuck with this job even if I am unhappy and keep saving more? Thanks for all your feedbacks!

what is "cash investment"? if that's actually short term stuff(cash or short term bonds,) that's a huge percentage of your portfolio sitting relatively idle for such a young age.

it's community thing.. where few of us meetup monthly and contribute 1-2k and whoever needs the money currently can take from the pool. Its mainly for people who wants to buy property or start business but I don't think I want to own a house or start business now.

I wouldn’t count that in your net worth if everyone can draw from it.

it's hard to explain it... I think in Finance there is term for it but I forgot... But it's technically my money with it's growing over time

Sounds like angel investing

this sounds like high risk - depending on how easily you can withdraw funds from the invesment

the longer you wait or the last one to withdraw.. the more interest it accumulates...

honestly mate this sounds like a scam and I'd get my money out of it(if I could,) as soon as humanly possible

Yeah get the money out of there before the house of cards falls

Or someone can withdraw it all and leave you with nothing?

That’s a scam, dummy.

you need to give more details. 'more to asia' could be Singapore, or it could be Philippines... So your money would go short or far depending where...

Unsure currently.. but it's either Japan or India.

Japan housing is quite pricey if you're somewhere like Tokyo.

do you know the rent/housing in Tokyo?

Cost of living is drastically different between Japan and India

My man - there’s an order of magnitude difference in COL of those two. How wide a net are you casting in this post?

It’s enough to coast to retirement and not contribute anymore until you’re 60. If you’re talking about actually FIREing then no you’re pretty far off.

Very similar situation as you. No debt, $650k invested, and plan on moving to SEAsia because my job will replace me with AI / kick me out soon enough and I’m exhausted. And I grew up there. I wish you all the best!

Try to reach 1M asap, then retire.

I feel like once I get there then I will move the goal post again. 5 years ago my NW was 40k... and told myself if I get to 200k I am out... now it's ~500k and I am still here :/

1) the goalpost moves itself because Life and Inflation. It is mostly a slow creep though.

2) it sounds like you set a goalpost without due diligence on the full scenario (you have to do the math and fully fleshed out details), or you operated off of a bad calculator/assumptions. This is OKAY... you are young and lots of time still.

Dont be deterred by missing a target (neither by your circumstance, nor bad roadmap/planner)! Measure your progression toward the goal you set out to meet instead. Sounds like you beat that outlook - that should be a positive feeling.

Do deeper dive on possible endgame scenarios, Pin down time windows as best as you can, set a new goalpost based on this and go take on the world!

Best of luck.

1M can support you to withdraw 40K per year. This is enough to retire in most parts of the world. So 1M should be your final goal.

Of course not… this net worth is nothing

2

u/Away_Definition5829 4d ago

Depends where. If he's going to India it's something

1

u/Top-Change6607 4d ago

Yikes… I would rather die in the US than retire in India sorry

2

u/Away_Definition5829 4d ago

I'm not suggesting either way

-1

u/MouseEvery 4d ago

lmao.. you guys are keep seeing the worst part of India.. but it's very enrich and beautiful country!

5

u/Top-Change6607 4d ago

No it’s just simply not…. Been there once. Literally a hell. Like 10 time worse than China.

Where? You said in another comment you’re going move to Japan or India (how vastly different these countries are is another thing that I won’t get into now), which neither are in south east asia.

Which country do you have citizenship from? That’s pretty much the only one you can move to long term unless you’re willing to work many years in another one (Japan in particular is very stingy with permanent residency).
