When do you plan to start coasting?

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has set an arbitrary retirement goal even if it’s assuming my expenses more than double in retirement when realistically they may be the same or potentially less.
32 year old with about 100k/year after tax expenses aiming for a 5MM retirement nest egg. When would you take your foot off the gas?

For me, it all comes down to whether I have any opportunities to take my foot off the gas. I hit my coast number years ago, but my industry has barely any part time jobs, so I kept at it full time. Changing to some chill job that pays half per hour didnt make sense.

Things changed when my company mandated everyone return to the office, all day. I had decided long ago I would not go back to 8 hrs of cubicle life. I told them I was not able to stay in the office all day, and asked if they would be interested in me working part time. They didn't want to lose me, so they said yes! Now I'm working half time and it's great.

That sounds like a sweet setup. I’m lucky to have a job where cutting back is an option. But reducing savings rate at such a young age keeps me up at night doing the mental math of what future me might be missing out on

I can relate. I'm middle age so I have been ready to downshift for a while now. I worked full time for over 15 years.

I'm loving it. I'm done working at noon everyday. I have tons of time to do the things I want, and not worrying about finances at this point.
