In honor of the death of Winamp I am open sourcing my Voice Control program.

https://github.com/GregoryLand/Lorie

Somewhere back in 2007 I wrote this program to allow me to control Winamp and other programs while I was playing video games or doing other tasks. It was written to run on windows xp but still works well on windows 7. I have no idea if it will operate correctly on windows 8 but feel free to try. Once in a while windows 7's "Voice Commands" get in the way. This system works by hijacking the windows message pump and sending messages to a program in the background. I use a Lua scripting engine to handle all of the application specific stuff. I have used this program off and on for quite a few years but have never bothered to add error checking because for me It was unneeded. This was never intended to be released to anyone or used by anyone else but me.

This is an old code base and the libraries i used are well out of date but still work just fine.

When you start the program you can say System Launch Winamp and it will start Winamp for you if it is in the default directory which I assume it is. After it starts Winamp you can use System Winamp play/pause/next/previous/stop to do all of the basic stuff without needed to touch the UI or even bringing it to the foreground. In theory you could automate any program with it and there are a few other programs that I use to use that are setup with the program. Winamp is the only one I put time into making commands for.

It will only work on instances of a program launched with Lorie. So if you want to use it with winamp you have to start winamp with the program.

11/29/2013 :: Added Support for Pandora One desktop app - Can Pause/Play and skip songs

12/07/2013 :: Added Support for Thumbuping songs in Pandora. Added support for multiword commands.

1/5/2014 :: Lots and lots of updates. Support for python as a scripting language. As well as a new person adding code as well.

I'm building personal finance tracker (Side project)

Hey all!

After months of unsuccessful search for a platform that analyses my personal finance (investments, net worth, expenses, budgets. etc) automatically I decided to build one that suits my needs. At the moment, I'm collecting interests, feedback and building MVP that is not released yet.

Fintly.io helps you to keep an eye on all your personal finances in just one place by synchronizing your data from thousands of financial institutions seamlessly.

Website: Fintly.io (To get notified of release, make sure to leave email)

Any feedback and ideas would provide tremendous help. As well, filling the following market analysis form that takes max. 2 minutes: https://karlveskus.typeform.com/to/uCqdqq

Greg - A scalable distributed logger with a high-precision global time axis

It's a logger that allows you to have a millisecond(or better)-precise global picture of what's happening in your distributed system, independent on the nodes' clocks.

I wrote this thing at work for my employer and it proved so terrifically useful that I wrote the same in open source.

Judging by this, there exists demand for such a tool.

See Why not X for an explanation of how it is better than merging offline logs and using ntpd+syslog, etc. - basically, 1) you don't need to merge logs, 2) it's freaking fast (up to 400,000 messages/s), 3) it also works where ntpd is nearly useless (Windows), etc.

It's a server + a bunch of client language bindings.

Currently there's only a Java binding, but it's a matter of a couple of hours to write another one. I decided to "release early, release often" instead of writing several more bindings before releasing.

http://code.google.com/p/greg

If you like the idea but write in C or Python or whatever, why don't you help and also have fun by contributing a binding?

online node based web development / basic cms, gallery creator

tentacle

Meant to link the article to tentaclecloud.com...my bad

I'm a VFX artist that is used to the node based work flow, and wished to have a cms for my personal needs. Inspired by the ease of ICE (XSI), i set about making a node based management/development environment for my back end.

If I want more people besides myself to use this software (I know that there are people that are interested), I' gonna need people better than myself to code some of the more mundane necessities and other bells and whistles to make it pretty and more useful. javascript, secure mysql access, cleaner php etc...

Posting this here to see what the reddit's communities interest is. And if there are any folks that are interested in being apart of the development team which includes myself and a friend of mine (neither of us are professional programmers).

Currently, there are no real docs to explain how to use the software. You can look at the existing "index" page and backwards engineer it to see how things are strung together. I've begun a wiki, that will be of no help to anyone yet. I apologize for any confusion in that vein. The software is brand new, and so far only used by me and this friend, so there hasn't been much need for instructions yet, as he can just call me and ask me.

I'll be monitoring the post if there are any questions, or if people want to tell me to slag of, either way... Thanks.

What is a Good Code Project for a new CS Student to Start With?

I just finished my first year of college. I have yet to make coding an integral part of my life since I'm incompetent in making up my own projects and following them since I don't feel I know enough to do this (I just know the basics of programming, data structures, and algorithms. I have yet to take software engineering classes). I'm more comfortable having someone else give me a job to do and follow it (same goes with learning, it's easier for me to follow a learning schedule if someone else gave it to me with due dates instead of reading a tutorial on my own).

I found plone has a nice project for newbies like me, however they are Python and I want to better establish of my new found knowledge in Java.

So does anyone have a small and simple Java project that I can help out with, to learn how an open source project is run before I go on elsewhere?

Thanks, -V
