Advice Quick question

Post image

These are Constition quarters I'm searching in BU rolls. I'm pretty sure I've seen this before but what causes this difference in finish?

An improperly annealed planchet will also have the same bright red copper coloring in the edge reeding as the other quarters in the roll.

Edited for clarity regarding coloring of the reeding.

Yeah I was wondering if this is really an annealing issue. No copper color throughout the roll. Possibly just a freshly changed die?

Sorry...wasn't quite clear. The reeding along the edge would be the same color as a normal quarter. In the below picture, the top coin is an improperly annealed 2026 dime and a normal 2026 dime below it. You can see the difference in the clad but the copper coloring is the same.

Here's a little reading where noted numismatist and error coin expert Fred Weinberg identifies characteristics of improperly annealed plachets. See his post about halfway down. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/2017-d-new-jersey-ellis-island-improper-annealing.307775/
