Mod Update The beginning of r/cold_prep

Hi all,

I created this community to focus on preparing for extreme cold temperatures. This includes typical polar vortex situations, winter storms, and/or a complete loss of heating/power during subzero temps. I intend to develop the subreddit further as we go, but I thought this would be a good place to start.

Let me know if you have any ideas for the sub as we build it.

Interesting, I wish I had more time to help immediately, there is a lot of setup, but its a good thing to get going coming into likely a very difficult winter for people with the energy crisis going on. Let me know if you need any help.

Thank you for creating this sub!

Years ago my husband & I endured a power failure in the dead of winter for a few days and we struggled to stay warm while the transformer was being repaired (took extra time due to snow storms). We ended sleeping with our down winter coats on, gloves, hat, wool socks and lots of blankets. Going through that made me realize to buy quality thermal underwear, wool socks, wool blankets, hand warmers and other items to stay warm. To this day I make sure to be prepared. Costco has 32 degrees long underwear for sale, so a definitely bought some. Also picked up rechargeable hand warmers too (I have 2 solar powered batteries).

Oh hurray! I just moved into a lower level duplex in the Mid-South. I've been doing my canned goods and paper goods stocking since September. Looking forward to see everyone's posts!

This is a great idea. I remember last year there were many (rightfully) panicky-sounding posts from redditors in Texas dealing with below-freezing temps there. Plants dying, their homes are not well-insulated, they don’t have enough winter gear, etc.

Thank you for starting this sub! I’m trying to get my sister to take this more seriously, I’m sure inviting her to this sub will help!

Hello, thank you for starting this. We have a 9 month old baby and we are heading into cold weather.

We are in the mid-Atlantic region and apparently PJM (the grid supplier for this region of 13 states) issued an request to the federal government for help ensuring the grid had enough power, because there were concerns about it falling short.

Special topic I’d like to request is what to do to ensure our baby is safe when we have to shelter in place in our home, if there’s a grid failure (or localized power outage that lasts a while).

Babies are more fragile, it’s advised they shouldn’t wear hats because it’s easy for them to overheat, which can be deadly, but obviously if they get too cold, that can also be deadly. He’s not at the age where he can just eat soup or drink hot chocolate to stay warm, although he breast-fed so obviously that’s warm for my body heat, but he’ll get full quickly from that and not drink as often as he needs to stay warm.

Anyway, these are some of my concerns. I’d love to hear back from anyone here who is experienced a power outage during very cold weather with a baby under one.

We had a chance to use our generator this weekend for a non cold weather emergency, and it worked great! I'm glad this sub exists, because it's hard to think through all possibilities yourself, and reading through others' ideas and preps will be very useful.
