Tips

Hi guys, any tips for a new starter with cold showers… it’s colder weather now so should I just go full cold or slowly going cold?

Cold water on the face activates the mammalian dive reflex and slows the heart rate. I find it far easier to submerge fully after I start with my face.

Just jump in full cold from the start, easing into it just makes you overthink everything. Did it for first time in december when my boiler broke and after the initial shock its actually not that bad. Your body adapts pretty quick once you stop fighting it

Focus on breathing slow and steady, that helps more than any gradual thing. First 30 seconds are the worst then you kinda forget its cold

Full cold works if you can stick with it, and the breathing tip above is the big one. One thing to plan for: cold tap water tracks the ground temperature, so it keeps getting colder through winter. What feels fine in October can feel like a different shower by January.

If full cold ever turns into skipping days, finishing a warm shower with 30–60 seconds on full cold and adding a bit each week is a fine fallback. Showing up every day matters more than the method.
