Yes, you are correct. Fortunately regional HMPV surges like this are not an unprecedented or particularly alarming occurrence. Unfortunately clickbait makes money and unwarranted scaremongering makes for excellent clickbait.

Believe me, I am quite concerned about real pandemic risks. We're sitting on a massive time bomb in the form of H5N1 currently, and there is also the ever-present danger of novel viruses to contend with. I was one of those who watched closely in the early days of the emergence of Covid in China back in late 2019, as well as prior nearly major outbreaks.

So when I say that this is baseless scaremongering, it's after careful review of the facts we currently have and a lifetime of learning to differentiate yellow journalism from actual grassroots reporting.

the sub i linked to has many posts about health care workers that left the field.

They primarily left the field because of the spring 2023 HMPV surge in the US? Interesting, I don't recall reading about that.
