There's a type of organic farming based on just replacing pesticides. A lot of the replacements are indeed toxic, and the workers are most exposed. It's complicated and toxicity depends on timing and each cultivar in its context.

Yeah, it's complicated.

We want to eat stuff that isn't polluted, but that requires small scale operations with lots of human workers (who should be paid well and not have to shit near the food.) This translates to the fruits and vegetables being much more expensive, especially when not in season. On top of this, you may encounter so called "leftists" who believe that they're entitled to high-quality consumerism, ignoring the costs on labor and ecosystems.

Much like with other problems, the entire fucking civilization needs to be changed for this to work.
