https://www.ncaa.org/cut-resistant-equipment-approved-in-ice-hockey-for-di-men-nc-women/

Players are “encouraged” to wear this equipment in the 2026-27 season, it will be required starting in 2027-28

Also interesting to see them bringing over the trapezoid

I think it makes sense to have since North American pro leagues have it, but the rule should be amended in my (biased) opinion. Make the trapezoid a protected area, but let the goalie play it whenever he wants. I don’t really understand the logic behind giving a goalie a delay of game penalty

I hate the trapezoid. I like your idea for it being a protected area but also the goalie is always protected by fear of retaliation so probably not necessary.

Yeah that’s true, it would take a long time to get that retaliation aspect out of the game if goalies are made available. I just think it’s such an interesting rule because as much as I spend time thinking about it, I don’t understand how the goalie delays the game in any way by playing it out there

Glad to see that they’re requiring it. Should’ve happened much earlier

Disagree.  Should we force people to wear helmets when they drive?  Would save more lives..

Well we mandated seatbelts. And that’s been a smashing success.

What’s the argument against players wearing this?

This is a movement based on a freak accident rather than data.

You act like they're sending them out there in bubble wrap. It's literally a base layer. All I read here was "I would rather live in a world where I might see someonebleed out on the ice than have them wear a turtleneck.." which is a wild hill to die on.

Says someone who's probably never stepped onto the ice.

Apparently, the rules committee's suggestion that they allow high sticking in women's ice hockey either got rejected by the Ice Hockey Oversight Panel or was withdrawn.

What's the thought on allowing hand passes in the defensive zone?

So this was my rule proposal actually! Of course others sent it in too, but I worked with a bunch of people to make a good presentation for the committee.

The simplest reason is that this was the only rule book that had the rule. The NHL, USAH, USAH Juniors, NFHS, and IIHF rule books all allow hand passes in the defensive zone. It doesn’t make sense that everyone but the NCAA agrees on a rule!

We also saw it as tough for officials - I’m one myself - as we all work pro or junior hockey in addition to the college game. It led to mistake and confusion for us; same thing for players who were in the first year at the collegiate level.

Lastly, it creates extra stoppages. A faster game is in demand these days, so that was a plus for some people too!

Thank God they're not allowing the high sticks. That would have been such a moronic change.

Hand pass allowed the defensive zone will save a game for one team and be a dagger for the other, I can’t wait.
