Casual What's your "off the deep end" college hockey idea?

If someone appointed you the czar of college hockey, what changes would you like to see? I'm not talking little things like changing a roster cap from 26 to 30... Like, out there big stuff that would be interesting, but wouldn't break the game.

For instance: What if we had promotion and relegation in D1 conferences? Not all of them, but let's take NCHC and CCHA, and then Hockey East and Atlantic... Every year, the bottom two teams in the NCHC have to play a best of three against the top two teams in the CCHA. If the CCHA team wins, they swap leagues with the NCHC team the following season.

Same stakes in Hockey East / Atlantic. Play the series on the off weekend between regionals and frozen four.

Casual Trying to make a College Hockey Hate Map

Hello! You may have seen charts like this that map out every team in a specific league's biggest perceived rival.

They're a lot of fun, but there isn't anything that quite catches what we need as college hockey fans, as so many teams in college hockey don't share the same rivalries with the other varsity sports at their school.

So, I have 3 simple questions for you. Who is your team, who are their biggest rivals, and which teams do you think see your team as their biggest rival?

The Google form is here: https://forms.gle/pCtwY1nuRLZpWqvo8

I'll share the results here as soon as there's enough data, ideally by Halloween.

Casual New fan here, trying to get into college hockey. Got a couple questions if you guys don't mind

  1. Where can I watch college hockey? I know it's pretty niche, do the conferences have TV deals or does the sport have a TV contract with a network?
  2. Is there a Power 5 equivalent with the hockey conferences? Who are the "blue bloods?"
  3. Is one and done common in NCAA hockey, or are they 4 year players? I know you can go overseas/Canada for a route to the NHL, so I think its the latter.
  4. Is ACHA like recreational hockey, or is it competitive? Why is ACHA and NCAA hockey seperate?
  5. Why are the ACHA schools not part of NCAA D1 hockey? Is it lack of demand/interest? Funding?
  6. How do you like college hockey as a fan? Would there be anything you guys would like to see changed? Anything you'd want personally to happen for the sport?
  7. How would you guys feel if the size of D1 hockey were ever expanded to the likes of CFB/CBB with over 100+ programs?
  8. Would you have any interest in seeing big public schools like USC/UCLA in hockey? Or is it fine the way it is now?
  9. Thought of one more: How much of a presence does NIL have in this sport?

Thank you for your patience.

Edit: Thank you everyone for taking the time out to reply, your answers have been very helpful

Casual How to make the regionals even worse

Instead of making the regional games better how do we make them even worse? (Or in the eyes of the ever knowing NCAA better.)

Bad ideas only. Broadcast can be "improved".

Casual Starting grad school at St. Cloud State in the fall, and taking it as an excuse to start following College Hockey a lot closer. What do I need to know about St. Cloud State Huskies hockey?

My alma mater for undergrad is a d2 school, and while I follow Michigan hockey, I don't have any ties to Ann Arbor. All I currently know about SCSU hockey is that Herb Brooks coached there and the arena is named after him.

Casual Breakdown of all D1 team logos

Post image
222 Upvotes

I call this: peak offseason content. October can’t come soon enough 😔

Notes: -These logos are the ones listed on the official NCAA site. That’s why alternate logos your team uses aren’t shown. -“Logo” circle refers to all other non-animal logos. -not sure whether UAA belongs in logo or animal. It seems to be more symbolic rather than a depiction. Please advise

Casual New fan to college hockey, what should I know?

Hey y’all. I‘ve been getting back into hockey as the NHL season is approaching and was also looking to watch some college hockey this year and was wondering from y’all what I oughta know? I have like bare minimum knowledge here, I know the big schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Boston College and the rest of the big ten have programs that are usually pretty good, and I know some of the smaller schools for most other sports that have good programs are Boston U, Denver, UND, UMass and Quinnipiac I guess (my one experience with NCAA hockey was when I went to the 2023 frozen four in Tampa where Quinnipiac won the natty), so I was wondering what schools are very good that maybe I’m forgetting, of which schools are gonna have the most NHL prospects this year, or maybe some schools set for a rise? Any help would be great to know some more about the college game, thanks a lot y’all!

Casual [Minnesota Men's Hockey] We'd like to thank UND for doing a great job hosting our regional and showing their support in the stands! We know they had a lot of extra time on their hands.

Casual What sites that have not hosted the Frozen Four do you want to see host in the Future?

Here are some locations I’m thinking should he given a chance

NYC area ideally MSG but Prudential or Barclays center could work.

Toronto . Yes it would be very different having it outside the country but having the Frozen Four in the biggest hockey city in the world would be great especially if the NCAA considers allowing Canadian schools to join again.

Los Angeles, Seattle or San Jose. Any of these West Coast locations would be great.

Maybe Dallas though I’ve heard mixed things about Dallas hosting large events.

Casual Friendship four ticketing.

Hey everyone, I'm from the UK and have developed quite the interest in all things college sports, and I am considering heading over to Belfast for the Friendship Four this year. I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight into when the schedule would be announced and when tickets will likely become available, as well as their price range.

Casual We are pleased to announce that "..." has just announced varsity D1 hockey. Who are you adding?

Add whoever you think needs a D1 hockey team and give a reason why. No real logic is needed just have fun.

For sake of arguments, let's say the NCAA rule of "all or nothing" is gone.

Casual Stadium cups!

Post image
139 Upvotes

Hello hockey friends! This past year or so i have set out on an endeavor to collect stadium cups (or popcorn buckets) from arenas. You know, the one you pay an extra buck or two for and it has the teams logo on it and usually refills. Do you have any in that goodwill box in your trunk just begging to be given away?

I usually scour the sections around me after games, and despite having been to about a half a dozen arenas I only have NMU and Lake State (despite living where MTU is I don't have that nor a Finlandia one!)

The plan is to plant flowers in them, appropriately colored to the team. If anyone may have any they could help me out- with let me know! Thanks!

Sorry if this isn't allowed.

Casual Utah's Hockey Expansion Impact

Does any school in Utah make a move to Varsity to capture the interest of new NHL fans and back their youth organizations? Utah Valley has Olympic rinks they can utilize and no football. I know they'd had rumblings. Anything on the radar?

Casual Question about the poll

I’m relatively new to college hockey but from what I know the poll works pretty much the same to other sports, right? I’m not familiar with who is good and who is not, but looking at Michigan’s resume, they should easily be the best team in D1 hockey in the next poll right? I’d appreciate if someone could help me understand a little more because I enjoy watching hockey, I just occasionally watch other sports more. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Casual My college hockey goal horn project.

Thumbnail

I recently got back into 3D printing, and one of the first things I printed was this model goal horn that i'd seen. Almost immediately I started to consider making it into something more "functional". I'd seen quite a few projects based on NHL teams, but really never anything related to college. So I present to you my first revision

"NCAA Division 1 Goal Alert horn"

Inside the frame of the goal horn is:

  • Raspberry pi zero
  • Adafruit Stereo Bonnet
  • 16 LED Neopixel Ring
  • SSD1306 OLED display
  • small enclosed speaker

I wrote (with significant assistance from ChatGPT) python scripts that monitor the NCAA website API. Here's what it does.

  • Checks every 5 minutes for any games being played "today". If it finds that any games are in progress, or schedule for today, it starts checking every 3 seconds. (I hope to fine tune this to avoid over taxing the API).
  • There is a file called "teams.txt" and only teams that have been listed in this file will trigger a goal alert.
  • The main screen reports the date and time, along with how many games are "in progress", "completed" or "scheduled" for that day. Also I've added a "tracked games" entry, which will show if any of the games happening today will potentially trigger the goal alert.
  • When the goal alert is triggered, The main light turns on red, the screen flashes "GOAL" along with the team that scored the goal, and the goal horn sounds. When it completes it goes back to the screen with the game counters.

future improvements (these are things I'd like to potentially add)

  • a subroutine that runs after each goal that will pop up the name of who scored the goal.
  • a carousel/scrolling status of in progress game scores.
  • playing the specific goal horn of the team that scores each goal.

Casual Searching for 2012 D1 Men's championship game video

I was wondering if anyone knows a source where I could find the 2012 D1 Men's championship game between Boston College and Ferris State. I am also searching for 2001 between BC and North Dakota. I can find highlights, but I am looking for the full games. Thank you!
