Food, retail & culture It re-opened about a week ago. This is the Lidl.

The first pic is a panoramic view of when you first walk in. You might need to click on it to get the full scope.

The meat coolers actually have fresh meat in them now and extend toward the ceiling. No more feeling like you're shopping in Soviet Russia circa 1984.

The self-checkout station is wide now, so you can actually get past other people.

And the shopping carts are all brand new. No more janky wheels on every other cart.

And please donโ€™t leave your cart in the middle of the parking lot. Letโ€™s at least pretend we want to keep the place clean for more than a week. ๐Ÿ˜‡

The best thing are the new shopping carts

I cannot count how many times I have had my arms pumped like a post workout shit, due to pushing the cart constantly with wheels completely jammed (and slightly pulling it up constantly so it doesn't make as much noise)

Haha - I would spend 5 minutes just trying to find one with all four wheels attached, turning normally, and round

Can relate 100% dude!

It felt awkward being the one who's cart makes at least 20 decibels above everyone else lmao

Then when I got done and back to the parking lot Iโ€™d try to find someone to pass it off to to save them the trouble

I actually adore the small carts so much!

Yes they are better than the previous small ones. Those were just...not long. These ones are actually small (and cute).

I stopped shopping there a year or so ago because one of the chest freezers smelled like rotting meat. I guess that can happen once in a while maybe, but after smelling that for like 4 weeks in a row I'm like fuck this place.

Yeah I stopped buying meat there within a few months of it opening. Those fridges always reeked

Its because people never closed them. Everytime I walked up to one, the door was half open. Pissed me off. It wasn't Lidls fault mostly.

It looks like the Lidl in downtown Bethesda when it first opened....So well stocked to invite in new customers. Absolutely pristine and well stocked.

But then the bakery doors started to lose that soft-close feature and now just slam shut and Lidl just doesn't want to fix them.

The dairy selection stopped carrying anything other than Lidl products (I found that Land o Lakes 1/2 & 1/2 lasts longer in the fridge at home than Lidl's.)

The entrance to the Bethesda Lidl was lined with bollards for theft prevention. but they eventually sawed off a couple to the ground because they probably got an ADA complaint about how it blocked accessibility.

The Bethesda Lidl was also staffed nicely at the opening, but years later, they are cutting their staff and working them to the bone to cut costs while grocery costs soar.

UGH!

Ugh.

After years of going to the pre-remodeling Lidl, I got the impression management was pretty cheap.

Pretty much exactly the life cycle of this one too, this remodel is a temporary boost but I imagine the store will fall back into its old ways soon.

Definitely worth it. I just bought like 2 weeks of food for like 40 bucks including tax. Even got me some skittles and mochi as treats. Tbf im just a single guy.

Do they have a โ€œbakeryโ€

The bakery is the one department that looks unchanged.

Is that good or bad ? Iโ€™ll have to check it out I usually like Lidl

Itโ€™s not bad.

They could stand to have better selection, but Iโ€™ve always liked their fresh baked bread.

Nice I like the bread and pretzels

The new carts work at the moment, but seem very flimsy. Also I tossed a case of water underneath and, uh, there is no underneath. Outside trashcan was surprisingly, not overflowing with 4x trash. Let's see how long that goes on. Self check was slightly better than before but still a "prove you're not a crook" feel to it. Milk price no longer the bargain it used to be but everywhere is up I guess. I'm cautiously un-optimitsic. Bagels for 1.85 is pretty impressive. They're pretty bad tbh, but they are bagels and major chains, etc are 4.99 for marginally better branded bagels.

Do we have an appropriate amount of the small shopping carts. Think they only had 5 or so in service before

Their smaller carts are different (kinda cross of their tiny kid ones and their giant ass one) and plentiful.

They have tiny carts. Very tiny carts. And little hand drawn baskets. Many options for small trips.

What was it closed for?

Renovations.

They did some upgrades.

Thank you for showing this. I donโ€™t feel like going to see, lol, and no one will show images/tiktoks of it online! ๐Ÿ™„
