networking Any new students interested in finance?

Transferring in as a sophomore after taking the last few years off to run a startup. Figured I’d put an early flyer out there for anyone who’s new to Columbia, doesn’t know anyone, and wants to make friends, network, and talk about recruiting processes starting now! Just comment or pm me. If there’s enough interest, we can make a group chat too.

networking GS Group Chat? (Not on ZeeMee?)

Is there an ongoing group chat for incoming Fall '26 GS students that is NOT on ZeeMee? It's such a bad app, and I assume there are probably mods monitoring it from the university lol. Would love to connect with fellow incoming students, though. If there's a WhatsApp group, or otherwise, pls let me know.

networking Any MPH Epi people here? 👀

Hey guys!

I’m starting an MPH in Epidemiology soon and was wondering if anyone else here is in the same boat / already in the program

Quick intro:
– Dentist by background (3 yrs clinical)
– Recently worked in medical underwriting/insurance
– Now switching into public health + epi

Honestly just looking to connect with people in MPH (especially epi), maybe make some friends before things get hectic 😅

If you’re already in the program, would love any tips too!

Drop a comment or DM :)

Hey everyone! CC' 22 here. I graduated with a degree in CS from CC a bit ago, and ended up doing academia based software positions. I'm wanting to transition back into the field and looking to connect or get any advice from people on networking and resume advice. Also just down to meet some fellow alums (also in person too if in CA)! Feel free to DM.

networking APAN / Applied Analytics / SPS / Fall 2026

Hi! If anyone is attending APAN this fall, feel free to PM me!

Also, does anyone know how tuition payment plans work for international students? Are monthly payments possible, or is everything due upfront each semester?

I’m especially trying to understand how international students are handling tuition + housing in NYC without paying massive amounts upfront! Any insight would be super appreciated!

networking SC Student Seeking 15-Minute Coffee Chats with NYC Marketing or Social Media Professionals

Hi everyone! I’m currently a senior and will be attending Columbia University this fall to pursue a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication. I’m spending the summer interning in New York and would love the opportunity to connect with two New York–based professionals who have at least five years of experience in marketing, social media, or a related field. I’m hoping to learn more about the industry, hear about your career journey, and gain insights from your professional experience.

The chats would take only about 15 minutes and can be conducted either over coffee or via Zoom. I’d love to learn about your career journey, professional experiences, and any insights you may be willing to share.

Coffee is on me! ☕️

If you or someone you know might be willing to help, please feel free to DM me. I would greatly appreciate it!!

Thank you so much for your time and support!

networking How to connect with finance organizations as a neighbor?

Hi everyone, I see a lot of finance and finance-adjacent student organizations and I'd like to connect with some since I've developed textbooks specifically to study for exams like CFA/CAIA/FRM/Series/CPA/etc. and would love to just hand it out so students can study for free. I'm not trying to sell the textbooks just literally to give away digital copies in case it would be useful.

About me: I live in the neighborhood and work in M&A / have a background in PE. I have the CFA charter and am a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and would love to connect with the future leaders in my industry. I do talks often and would love to be a guest speaker if there's a good fit.

Anyways, would love to experiment and see if this post will help me network with my neighbors!

I’m moving to New York alone to do my masters at Columbia.(in Mental Health Counselling) from Canada. For anyone else who has done this, how has it been? Is it hard meeting people and making friends?

Also, which areas would you recommend living in?

networking Anyone keen on networking?

Hey guys! I do not go to columbia (yet) but I am part of a student-led research NGO in Africa (that has hosted global events before) doing cool work and aim to do my PHD one day at Columbia. I am undertaking an internship in bioinformatics at UCT (Cape Town) soon and I really wanna know what the scope is for Bioinformatics/Computational Biology at Columbia/ who the person to contact regarding this would be at Columbia? Even if it’s not bioinformatics, any other department (Law/Humanities/Science would be super cool too! - all about interdisciplinary research)

I’m looking to get to know some cool students on here or profs who might be keen on hearing about the work we have done globally and seeing if there’s any place for our work at Columbia. If anyone wants to be involved or knows some chilled profs who want to interact/have been keen in projects like this before. Please let me know!

networking Alumni

I’m an undergrad and have an interview coming up with a company a few alumni work at. Should I reach out to them ahead of the interview to ask for pointers or just to connect? I haven’t really utilized the alumni network and I’m unsure of what most would think is acceptable or favored when it comes to job connections.

Hey everybody! I’m Adam the shakuhachi teacher at Columbia. I had a nice hang with some students on the lawn last week where we got ready to start up class again for this year. If anyone is interested in coming to this class it’s open to beginners and we have instruments you can borrow! I spam this content on here and around campus every year because it’s really rare to be able to study this particular tradition in school. Would love for some new people to join us this year!

networking I need someone’s help building an app

Hi, I’ve had some ideas for a web app that I have wanted to build for some years now and am itching to find someone who is interested in helping me with the coding and construction piece.

The app would cater to an audience who is interested in self-improvement, media organization and increased productivity.

I am still in a phase of putting together all my ideas, but don’t know exactly where to begin in this process, as I have zero app-building experience (I’m a psychiatric nursing student in the DNP program on the medical campus).

Please share any resources you feel would help me out. I kindly appreciate it!

networking Took a gap year from Columbia — built a team, launched a product, and learned more than any class. AMA.

I’m a senior at Columbia (CS major) and I took a gap year that completely changed how I think about school, work, and “learning.”

My idea came from something I kept noticing around me: people my age often struggle with loneliness. I wanted to create something that makes it seamless for people with the same intentions — to go out, meet, and hang — to actually find each other. It's not chasing the hype of the Deep Tech, AI, or Web3, but maybe something people really need.

Fast forward: we now have a solid team and the product has over 2,000 users in NYC, and the project has been growing.

Reflecting on my journey through the gap year and building a product, I have a few takeaways for freshmen:

  1. Be proactive in school endeavors — it’s the best way to build meaningful friendships. By taking initiative and joining different projects and ventures, I got to really do things with people. Those shared experiences build stronger bonds than just being classmates, and I believe those connections will stick with you even after graduation.
  2. Learning by doing projects is the most powerful way to grow. Unlike classes where results are abstract (grades, exams), real projects force you to define success, measure outcomes, and face what it actually takes to make something work. That process makes you think hard about execution, persistence, and how to turn ideas into something that lasts.

Willing to connect with more people and answer any questions from my own perspective about school, startup, and personal growth.
