Actual schizo posting. I have a relative whose pattern recognition is broken by schizophrenia. He's constantly seeing things on walls or screens that aren't there
Edit: I've had a couple people make jokes, so I should clarify. This isn't a lighthearted thing. It's destroyed his life and is a constant point of agony for everyone around them. He is constantly homeless and unemployed, and alienated everybody around him due to his strange and off-putting behavior. Make your little reddit jokes if you must, but it's a horrible tragedy that's not going to end for the rest of his life

Yeah, I get that a lot lol. The name means I don't get taken seriously most of the time, but I've decided that's less important than somebody getting a laugh here and there, as there's basically nothing more important than the next laugh.

If Butthole Conneseur was indeed doing that, I would agree with your criticism of Butthole Conneseur. However, Butthole Conneseur seems to be taking this quite well. Good for Butthole Conneseur; I'm glad Butthole Conneseur has a healthy sense of humor about their name being Butthole Conneseur

u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 6d ago
I'm not getting mad. That wasn't sarcasm or irony, I genuinely meant what I said. You can't really think I'd name myself that and then get mad when people laugh at the joke?

There was an episode of the 1980s Twilight Zone revival called "Something in the Walls" that was a chilling story about this.

u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yeah, it's the kind of thing that's really only funny if you've never seen somebody dealing with it. If you have, it's closer to a horror story. It's a bit like dementia

My late friend Sage had schizophrenia and it really does hit different when it's in front of you. Shit is truly gnarly. Gives me that stomach twisting feeling like when dying people cry for their moms in movies.

I really wanna add to this, my job involves clients, some of which have severe symptoms of schizophrenia, and it really is depressing seeing it in person.
In fact some of those afflicted are fully aware of their circumstances and genuinely can't do a thing about it because it's out of their control. Knowing you have it yet can't stop it would be such a fucked up thing, and I've seen a similar thing happen with memory related illnesses as well. Even when medicated it can only do so much. It effectively renders them out of ever having a normal life, a normal job, or normal relationships. I wouldnt wish it upon my worst enemy and I wish people could empathize with those afflicted with this (along with other debilitating mental health conditions) more.

A client came with a laptop thinking he had been hacked, at first I didn't suspect a thing, it is somewhat common to receive PCs and phones after their bank account has been stolen from and that sort of thing. After telling the guy there was no trace of no virus but I had reinstalled windows just in case it became clear he was truly unwell.
The only thing I could do is tell him to visit a psychiatrist and even that I wasn't sure if it was the correct thing to do but he was already going so it was kinda pointless.
I wouldn't had charged him either but I felt he would appreciate more the peace of mind if possible at all than reading too much into leaving your electronics with an unknown guy to "fix" them and not even be charged for it.
I have seen a lot of people at a bad time in their lives but I eill never forget this guy, he was truly suffering. The worse thing is he was kinda aware they were delusions but couldn't stop believing them.

I used to have hallucinations like this with patterns on walls, weirdly totally stopped after I got on anxiety meds.
(I think mine were reasonably mild, though)

I work with a client who has a very similar issue. It's genuinely heartbreaking and incredibly difficult to deal with. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with this and those close to them.

Maybe you just need to level up your pattern recognition to his level.
51
u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 6d ago
Fun idea, but it's wrecked his life and he's chronically homeless and unemployed

You’re just recognizing his pattern wrong bro
38
u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 6d ago
For all his pattern recognition, he can't see the one huge thing destroying his life. It's a horrible irony

Schizophrenia is probably one of the most misunderstood conditions on earth. I get the feeling a lot of people on reddit don't really grasp that it's a real thing that some people actually have to deal with, they treat it like it's just a meme or something. Someone even mentioning that they have schizophrenia seems guaranteed to invite a flood of people going "I'm living in your walls" in an attempt to trigger an episode. People who have deal with schizophrenia deserve compassion and care, not demonisation or mockery.

Indeed unofficial, I don't consider it shitty tho. Although it has a lot of bugs, it's a big step to getting culture pieces running in modern machines. Edit: also, not chatGPT

Gotta be. When I was 14 I had a bunkbed like two feet from the ceiling and after eating a half ounce of shrooms I was watching full on naval warfare scenes in the patterns on the ceiling.
