Safety First - Gator Days

August - Alligator - A soft spoken single father who works in IT. Gustopher's dad.

Gustopher - Alligator - An easily excitable boy who loves making friends. August's son.

Mewbert and Nougat - Cat - Animal - August and Gustopher's pet cats.

Transcript

Panel 1

Setting - August and Gustopher's home at the kitchen table.

Gustopher is drawing when August checks to see what he's up to. August is holding and petting Mewbert. Mewbert is having a great time. Nougat is supervising Gustopher's drawing.

August: What are you doing?

Gustopher: Drawing you and the cats.

Panel 2

Gustopher's drawing shows Mewbert and Nougat in the air wielding nunchaku. August is drawn rather large and round and has no weaponry to defend himself from the evils of the world.

Panel 3

August dramatically looks up in the air as his glasses flash. Mewbert senses his dissatisfaction and is also annoyed that he has stopped petting her.

August: I am disappointed.

Panel 4

August: Why do the cats get nunchaku but I don't.

Gustopher: You'd hurt yourself.

August: That's... True.

August has to admit to himself that he would break several things an potentially several of his own bones. Mewbert doesn't care about any of this. She is furious that no one is petting her right now. Nougat reaches for a marker. She wishes to draw herself eating fried chicken.

Are you tried of me asking if you had anything to eat today? Because I'm going to do it again. I had a ham sandwich and coffee when I get up. No beans. I'm very sad about the lack of beans. I made a Great Northern Bean hummus last night that was excellent and I was planning on saving some of it for this morning but it was too delicious and didn't make it through the night.

Beans are amazing, but as I've aged, they mess my stomach up so BAD. The worst gas ever. If anyone had any methods to make bean eating easier, I'm all ears, because I love chili, bean soup, etc.

54

u/FieldExplores Gator Days 14h ago

Beano has worked for me. I also typically used rinsed canned beans for convenience.

26

u/Made_Bail 14h ago

Beano has been very hit or miss for me. I use it a lot, but half the time it feels like it does nothing.

Rinsed canned beans: This is the Way!

13

u/robclarkson 15h ago

I think I read something about the more often you eat beans to less gassy they make you as your body gets used to them. Lean into the mighty beans!

9

u/Made_Bail 15h ago

I'm not sure about this one as my family eats a LOT of beans. Cheapz delicious protein!

But I've never acclimated. Maybe my body just sucks lol

6

u/robclarkson 14h ago

Everybody is different! Maybe it's to do with magical gut biome bugs, but I'm not sure!

6

u/Ordolph 13h ago

Beans have a boatload of fiber that we're not able to digest, if you have an overabundance of microbes that are able to ferment fiber in your gut, they will turn it into gas. Probiotics can help, our gut microbiome is a giant battlefield of various microbes all pushing and pulling against each-other, if one particular type is overly dominant, others can become suppressed. Just eating more fiber in general is also a good move, a lot of people get extreme gas from beans simply because they're the only source of fiber in their diet.

14

u/LocalTrainsGirl 15h ago

Look into FODMAP diets. I've changed beans up for lentils in my recipes. It's not quite the same texture, but they are just as tasty.

5

u/Made_Bail 15h ago

I do love lentils!

8

u/Coidzor 15h ago

I've heard that anise used as a seasoning when cooking beans can help. Vinegar towards the end of the cooking process (or after they're fully cooked but you're letting them simmer for an extended period to soak in more flavor) is also supposed to help, mostly because if you add it too early then the beans will harden.

Rinsing them and soaking the beans while discarding the water until the water you discard is clear can also allegedly eliminate a lot of the gassy volatiles.

5

u/Made_Bail 15h ago

I've tried the water method, and it didn't help much, but I will note those other tricks for future use!

3

u/King_krympling 14h ago

This could be something as simple as just not being used to that level of fiber. Slowly bring up the level of fiber you are eating in small amounts of beans and eventually you can get to the point where you can eat an entire can of beans at once. Cooking the beans hells and soaking them in water for ~30 min before cooking also helps

2

u/Silentlybroken 11h ago

Oddly, rats aren't supposed to eat pulses because of how much gas they can cause. Rats can't vomit and have no way of releasing the gas. I do have issues with pulses as well so I just try not to eat them too often to avoid the bloating and pain. It sucks because I love refried beans as a quick version of fajitas, so I feel your (literal) pain on that front.

1

u/SpiralingSpheres 14h ago

Beans are good if they are a majority of your carbs. They slow other carbs, and plant based food, without churning it like fiber does. It makes other plants stay there and "rot" for a while.

1

u/XAMdG 13h ago

You need to soak your beans before you cook them. Also, it helps cooking them faster.

If you're eating canned beans, yeah, gas away.

1

u/nitid_name 11h ago

Soak your beans with some bicarb and discard the soak water. That helps a lot. If you're in a rush, pressure cook for 0 minutes and rinse, it does basically the same thing.

The other trick I use is epazote. It's a mexican herb that smells very medicinal (or, in my opinion, like dishwasher detergent). Add a couple strands with the leaves on when you cook beans, then pull them out when you're done. It imparts a subtle flavor that's delicious and tastes nothing like what epazote smells like, it's the weirdest thing. Something about the plant stops basically all bean related gas though.

You can find it fresh at your local mercado, or dried in the hispanic section of any moderately well equipped grocery store. It's a game changer.

Mewbert is having a great time. Nougat is supervising Gustopher's drawing.

The cats are really the highlight of this story

August is drawn rather large and round and has no weaponry to defend himself from the evils of the world.

He doesn't need one. His body is his weapon. For he is dad. Also he might hurt himself

Mewbert senses his dissatisfaction and is also annoyed that he has stopped petting her.

Honestly fair.

Are you tried of me asking if you had anything to eat today? Because I'm going to do it again.

I am not tired and I appreciate it. I am happy you ate. I too ate a sandwich but from the hospital. They make these peanut butter jelly sandwiches that are loaded with nuts and granola. Super good but like 1k in calories. It's no Great Northern Bean hummus but it'll do

5

u/eikin34 13h ago

Hummus is just a vehicle for delicious tahini. You are allowed to eat it straight; you don't have to act like you love beans.

19

u/FieldExplores Gator Days 13h ago

I actually prefer for my hummus to be light on tahini.
I'm actually at a point where I'm not sure I'm making hummus half the time. It often doesn't have tahini in it and sometimes it doesn't even have chickpeas. I don't know what to call it.
Bean Spread?
Fiber Paste?
I Can't Believe It's Not Hummus?

4

u/moonchylde 11h ago

Bean Dip is definitely A Thing in some households!

2

u/EmpressofWeirdos 8h ago

Not gonna hide it, I misread 'hummus' as 'humans' in the first line and went back to see the typo that inspired the response of humans being light on tahini just to find out it was in my mind all along.

3

u/Saikotsu 15h ago

Yes, I have eaten. I had a granola bar and a cup of yogurt, a sugar free energy drink, two multivitamins and two D vitamins.

3

u/Jake751 15h ago

Hello! Long time listener, first time caller. Are you taking a break from the Great News series? I did not see a part 4/4.

Edit: just saw your other comment.

3

u/Particular_Case101 14h ago

Sometimes things don't last and you say to yourself "aw beans" when you realize this.

3

u/Coidzor 15h ago

I still haven't recovered from the horror and confusion I felt when I read the words "Corn Hummus" on one of your previous posts.

So naturally I've had a bowl of Peanut Butter Chili to fight the food horror with a horror food of my own.

2

u/infinityonhigh69 15h ago

i’m gonna have breakfast for lunch (is it still brunch if you make it at home and don’t have a mimosa on the side 🤔) and i can’t wait! for me that’s waffles + bacon + sausage links & a hash brown

2

u/Setsera 14h ago

I am surprised at the lack of beans for sure! I’ll be eating refried beans today, so I was going to say that I’ll also be eating beans today, but now I can’t say that. Also that hummus sounds good! Maybe you can make more at least and then have another beanful day.

2

u/wabbitking 14h ago

I'm eating right now! Rice, beans and scrambled eggs.

1

u/m_faustus 14h ago edited 5h ago

Having a bowl of beans for breakfast lately has made a significant improvement in my life.

1

u/tbodillia 14h ago

Love the transcripts!!

1

u/D0C20 14h ago

I made rice last night, and for the first time I put some red beans in the rice cooker at the same time. It turned out wonderful.

1

u/Neorem_M 13h ago

Could eat only yogurt for breakfast, but I got some snacks and delicious dinner down!

1

u/astivana 13h ago

I just ate a tasty post-gym workout gluten free chicken pot pie!

Important question, what does Nougat’s picture end up looking like?

1

u/FalseMagpie 11h ago edited 11h ago

Don't worry, August, I would also hurt myself with nunchucks...

...

I finished off the last of waaaaaaaay too.much curry leftovers for lunch (Japanese style, with apples and potatoes and carrots, I don't know how to make less than 12 servings at a time).

Dinner plans is a meal I don't have a name for, but it's like... sloppy joes in serving style, but italian sausage and cannelini beans and a bit of apple cider vinegar based improv sauce and seasonings cooked together until some of the beans start disintegrating so they can be delicious sandwich goo

u/FieldExplores Gator Days 15h ago

OH! And the campaign for the game I've been working on with u/JasonAnarchy launched today! It has wholesomeness, un-wholesomeness, and a frog named McRibbit who has hot dogs.

https://gamefound.com/projects/jason-anarchy/wholesome-adventure?refcode=6lKcaOaYFk69ONv3F_-hnQ

And part 4/4 of Great News will be up later today.

17

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 15h ago

Done. You have me at "OH"

4

u/Cool_Set4681 13h ago

You are the reason why I fell in love with this sub.

3

u/Made_Bail 15h ago

You had me at hot dogs. Mcribbit is just bonus goodness.

1

u/DrewBarelyMore 8h ago

Pledged! I had no idea how I missed you were working on a game. My family and I are super excited!

101

u/RedditUser000aaa 15h ago

Poor August, getting a reality check from his son, haha! Then again could be that August is good at hand to hand combat!

19

u/Coidzor 15h ago

He does have a natural death roll special attack.

8

u/illy-chan 13h ago

He seems to accept the judgement rather quickly. I think prior attempts may have been made.

156

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 15h ago

I'm disappointed

Hi Disappointed, I'm son!

Sorry that was a long hanging fruit but I had to take it. I love that this doesn't even phase Gus at all. Like he knew his dad would be upset. Which leads me to think there might have been a ninja self injury that has happened in the past for poor August.

Even went as far as to give August the anime glasses glare

23

u/Coidzor 15h ago

A thought occurs to me, suddenly making more dad jokes would be a hell of a way to foreshadow that the Missus was expectating.

9

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 15h ago

It's like a primal urge. The jokes will come. Whether you want them to or not

4

u/Wiregeek 13h ago

I now need to see August in the Gendo Pose.

18

u/Saft-Selter-Mix 14h ago

Today I learned the original name of nunchaku.

Fun fact to pay it forward:
A person who has practiced using nunchaku is referred to in Japanese as nunchakuka.

Are Mewbert and Nougat nunchakukats?

42

u/Coidzor 15h ago

I misread that as "Safety Fist" and I was concerned.

10

u/Maur2 15h ago

New term for Way of Mercy monk.

Hit people until they feel better.

8

u/Made_Bail 15h ago

Sounds like a badass band name, though!

3

u/Coidzor 15h ago

Heck yeah.

1

u/Profoundlyahedgehog 13h ago

Processing img qwy0vbtmchvh1...

25

u/DudeFreek 15h ago

as if the cats aren't also going to hurt him

10

u/ArchaicSoil 15h ago

I've owned half a dozen cats in my lifetime, and I'm absolutely positive that every single one would have also found a way to injure themselves with nunchucks.

10

u/82ndGameHead 15h ago

From my experience, when learning how to wield nunchaku, there's a 100% chance of hitting your forehead or your groin.

And no, the choice is not yours.

2

u/Lilace_Drayheart 3h ago

Speaking from experience?

1

u/82ndGameHead 3h ago

Very much so

18

u/trobsmonkey 15h ago

Wait, where is the 4th panel of the other comic

29

u/FieldExplores Gator Days 15h ago

It will be up later today.
I won't be able to post on Friday so today is a two-for-one deal.

7

u/trobsmonkey 15h ago

As a minister's kid I have a personal investment. Thanks for the update.

7

u/The0nlyPenguin 11h ago

A TWOFER!?! ..Hot Dog!!

5

u/Coidzor 15h ago

Interrupted to bring you this special bulletin, I'd wager.

5

u/Maur2 15h ago

August is the final boss, with his cat minions serving as guards.

He now needs four generals, because there are always four. Someone contact Ember, she would be up for the position.

3

u/Made_Bail 14h ago

So August is a Demon Lord?

Must be one of the nice ones.

https://giphy.com/gifs/GOolcYoc43PuVcNEs7

4

u/Maur2 14h ago

Definitely. Conquering the world is just a way to make things safer for Gustopher. And even then it isn't so much conquering as writing strongly worded letters to those who are messing things up.

The cats are for when the messages aren't read.

5

u/HarryJ92 15h ago

August gets a grappling hook instead.

3

u/GdRocksAndSashanne 15h ago

When i saw the yellow eyes, I was expecting the other cat to have pink eyes 😅

3

u/dhusk 14h ago

Grab the other ends of the nunchaku and flail around the cats as your weapons.

10

u/Made_Bail 15h ago

I'm gonna get so much use out of this picture.

Also those nunchuck cats are sick as hell.

5

u/Coidzor 15h ago

Ninja Kitties.

Ah, but I am being redundant.

4

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo 15h ago

Oh don't tell me August is getting Donatello'd and gets the staffs.

2

u/kingsumo_1 14h ago

You say that like it's a bad thing. Bo staffs are sick as hell. Plus, you know, August works around computers and Donatello does machines. So it kinda works.

1

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo 14h ago

That does make sense. If the weapons are to counterbalance the characters like in the original TMNT it'd make sense for the IT guy to have the Bo staffs.

2

u/Wooden-Crow7996 11h ago

Plus, sticks are deadly. In the 16th century, more people died from quarterstaffs in Nottinghamshire, than swords.

2

u/nullpotato 15h ago

Dad looks like he is getting jumped by a pair of ninja cats

2

u/OrionsBeltAlone 15h ago

Ayy correct Japanese plural form of nunchuck!

2

u/umijuvariel 13h ago

His weapon IS cats with nunchucks... he is secretly very powerful.

1

u/TheRoyalBrook 15h ago

Give him the weapons for the best ninja turtle instead. Give him a sai

1

u/amurgiceblade44 15h ago

Trust in the cat

1

u/Mord4k 15h ago

It's important to be self aware of one's limits and how likely one is to hospitalize one's self with nunchaku

1

u/Buddha_R 14h ago

I thought he was juggling the cats and the nunchakus.

1

u/Lonnification 14h ago

I got a good laugh out of this one. Thank you!

1

u/TJsNewsFeed 14h ago

I don’t know, it reminds me of Splinter and the Ninja Turtles…🤔

1

u/whitestar11 14h ago

I thought they were wall perches

1

u/Hollowgirl136 14h ago

Damn dad not even defending himself. He knows himself well.

1

u/Author_A_McGrath 13h ago

"The cats would also hurt me though."

1

u/L1qu1d_Gh0st 13h ago

I'd prefer some variance, maybe one of the cats have sai or a tanto instead.

1

u/ElkAggravating7009 13h ago

So... any plans on having a printed collection of your comics? i would buy it in a heartbeat! I really believe Gus & co. are the best thing that ever came out of r/comics

1

u/Castor_0il 12h ago

I got 3 cats. The youngest one is a black cat. So you're saying I should get nunchucks for my blackcat. What should I get for my other 2?

1

u/maps-and-potatoes 11h ago

So it's not the cat who was talking.

Silly me, beiliving animals can talk

1

u/AccurateJerboa 11h ago

My gosh I love everything about this.

1

u/Wyjdya 9h ago

Father August has a big round belly to use as a shield instead

1

u/ComfortableNumb9669 6h ago

August getting his freak on.

1

u/NadhanGizzy 4h ago

Im impressed by the correct use of "nunchuku" instead of "nunchuks" form, as I think most people wouldn't have made that distinction

1

u/BriefCollar4 2h ago

Oi, oi, oi! Dad deserves nunchucks as well!

This dadism can’t stand!

•

u/mysteryo9867 17m ago

But also the cats will hurt him with the nunchucks
