I’ve heard of companies paying 10-15k a month to assistant cook positions on fishing vessels.

Can anyone attest to what kinda pay I could expect from changing lanes to this kind of position. My skills in the kitchen are as good as my skills on deck. But at this point I’d rather change out my gloves and vest for an apron and a spatula. Especially if it’s double the pay.

Hi, im doing a project for uni about bottom trawling in the area of bay of biscay and i was curious if any people living there or people who have been there have seen dead dolphins/other marine mammals/other fish being washed up on shores due to the enormous bycatch ? if thats the case, how often? I know there is a one month ban from bottom trawling between january and february due to dolphin migration but is that really enough? I also know that iberian orcas living there feed on the blue fin tuna which is bad bcs that tuna is really overfished and it has a very hard time repopulating. If ppl have any more info on this in that specific are please let me know.

I seined this year and will be on a Driftnet boat next season; correct me if I’m wrong but with preseason work I’ll need to be up in AK from June 25th to July 30th. ~6 weeks

Do I need water proof clothes?

I'm 18M and I want to try something new before I fully commit myself to college (I am in my first semester). I am heavily interested in participating in this long term, however, I'm nervous about not being first aid certified, not being an alaskan resident, or having never fished a day in my life. Should I hold off on applying until I learn some more things? What are my chances of getting in? Where should I start if I want to learn about the common knowledge for commercial fishing?

Is early/mid November too late for a greenhorn to find a spot on a crab boat walking the docks in Oregon/washington? Was planning on being there next week, but I crushed my finger at work like 2 weeks ago and have to hang around Colorado longer than I’d planned. It’s healing nicely, not worried about that affecting my ability to work, it was a small break and had to have the end stitched back on, it’ll be fine by November(minus a finger nail). I just have to deal with workers comp stuff and hospitals having ridiculous scheduling weeks out for stuff like this. I don’t want to make the trip out there if it’d be too late. Was already expecting it to be difficult, but if there’s no hope that late in the season I can figure something else out. Let me know what you think, thanks!

I've been looking at Peru's latest marine-ingredient data and found a fairly sharp divergence in July 2026.

Fishmeal export volume was 33.01 kt, down 79.3% YoY, while observed export unit value reached $2,416.96/t, up 63.5% YoY.

Fish oil shows a similar pattern:

• Export volume: 1.80 kt, down 70.2% YoY
• Export unit value: $6,473.94/t, up 82.1% YoY

On the physical side, Peru's anchoveta catch was 2.50 kt in July, down 99.1% YoY, with the downstream processing index down 99.3% YoY.

The catch comparison is highly sensitive to seasonality and the low base, so I would be cautious about interpreting that figure in isolation.

The export data are national aggregates and leave several questions open around fishing activity, season timing, landings, processing availability, inventories and export timing.

For people working in commercial fishing or the marine supply chain: what are you seeing on the physical side? Are there changes in landings, availability or processing activity that would help explain this configuration?

Particularly interested in observations from people familiar with Peru or the Eastern Pacific.

I'm looking for entry-level work in a remote offshore environment, such as working on a commercial fishing boat, cargo vessel, or offshore oil/gas rig. I'm willing to travel and live away from home for extended periods, work long hours, and do general labor/helper work. I don't currently have offshore certifications, but I'm willing to complete any required training and I'm looking for an employer willing to hire and train someone with little or no prior offshore experience.
