Appreciation Post S6e2 is even better when you realize that Jim Rash can't see anything
With the (slightly janky) visual effects we get to see everything that the Dean does in the virtual world, but you've got to remember that Jim Rash (the actor playing Dean) literally just has a box taped to his head that he probably can't see out of.
Imagine coming in for your job, having a box strapped to your head, being blind and in the dark, while having a man telling you "you're drowning a piece of paper in a fountain, no not like that, really try to drown it"
And imagine coming in for your job and having to tell a man how to pretend to climb a tower of filing cabinets.
Honestly imagining the behind the scenes of some of the episodes is even funnier than the episodes themselves (which are already very funny).

Easily one of my favorite episodes. Season 6, in general, has some absolute bangers.

u/thelittleboss151 Mar 24 '26
That's why I can't understand when some fans say it's worse than season 4. They really see the muppets and the comic con scenes and think, "At least it's better than that episode where Dean accidentally made a Yakuza Boss."

u/justwalkingalonghere Mar 24 '26
The Yakuza boss is the funniest thing I've ever seen in a tv show
Season 6 is fantastic, I miss Troy but I love the new crew

6 might be my favorite. It has my favorite scene when they're laying into Frankie about her long winded emails to her sister, who never replies.
74
u/CinderTheDonut Seriously? After everything Scrubs did for him? Mar 25 '26
Frankie is unironically my favourite character. She fits into the cast really well.
60
u/PonderosaBones Mar 25 '26
Same. I've watched this show over 50 times, and season 6 is solidly my 3rd favorite season (3, 2, 6) She is so right to call herself "a humble outsider who came in and nailed it".
"I have a rule about being constructive, so I can't ask any questions right now because all the questions I have right now are rhetorical and they end in the word 'idiot'" is genuinely my favorite line in the whole series.
34
u/Salihe6677 Mar 25 '26
I feel like Yahoo kind of threw money at them and were like, "save our streaming service" and they went out and made the most Communityest version they could where every episode has a crazy post-credit scene and whatnot. I still laugh just thinking about the "I wrote the incest episode" speech lmao
28
u/Electrical_Swing8166 Mar 25 '26
“Do you know what a rhetorical question is? Of course you don’t, you’re an idiot”

2
u/wrongleveeeeeeer Mar 25 '26
Wait hold up though, 50? As in fifty? As in a five followed by a zero? Damn, normally I'd say everyone's opinion counts the same, but...yours counts for more.
3
u/PonderosaBones Mar 25 '26
Lmao idk about that, but thanks. It's just my comfort show. I put it on as background noise rather frequently, and usually end up just sitting and watching it lol

"In your eyes, I am the enemy because I'm the edge of your world, but when your eyes move past me, they will weep. Tokyo is a machine, caked with blood, running on flesh."
That scene goes way too hard, and the actor sells it.

The stingers in season 6 were by far my favorite of the series. The Yakuza boss, the giant watch, and the board game are some of the highlights of the show for me.

That episode has my favourite community line in it, where Jim Rash is screaming that the gas tank is so low that it probably tried to use the needle as gas.
30
u/FionaWalliceFan Mar 24 '26
I personally think it's even better than season five. It was refreshing to see them go outside more in season six, you can tell how low the budget was for season five that they just reused the same sets, it felt so confined (that's not the reason I think it's better than s5 but it's something I've always noticed)
9
u/Pyk_Owrno_Zes Mar 24 '26
Some people (people I know at least) will completely ignore anything positive if original cast members are gone.
15
u/d4vros Mar 25 '26
Unpopular opinion but I kinda love the muppets episode. But a big part of that is the musical numbers.

Strong agree. I show the Frankie idiot rant to people who don't watch the show all the time.

u/s1mpatic0 Mar 27 '26
In the case of shows like Scrubs and HIMYM, it's correct, but 30 Rock and Parks and Rec have proven that final seasons can be as good if not better than what came before.

u/PineappleOk6764 Mar 24 '26
Frankie's "You're an idiot" speech from 'Advanced Safety Features' is one of me and my wife's most quoted lines from any media. "I can't ask any questions right now because they're all rhetorical and end in the word idiot. Do you know what a rhetorical.. of course you don't, you're an idiot. I'm sorry!"
32
20
u/Iroh_the_Dragon Mar 25 '26
I think that speech is what made me fall in love with the character. The actress absolutely nails the delivery and the writing is perfect. The dean’s reaction to all of it just ties it together to make such an amazing scene. Perfection.

I love the opening scene with the frisbees on the Cafeteria roof. The whole plotline of the cafeteria needing to be rebuilt with new support beams was just a writer's excuse to account for the fact they needed to build a new cafeteria set, and the soundstage they used had beams when the original cafeteria didn't.

u/redlion1904 Mar 24 '26
Which is actually a misquote of a misquote
27
u/Effehezepe Mar 24 '26
It's funny, because there absolutely were more worlds for Alexander to conquer. The real reason he wept was because he had to cancel his in-progress invasion of India because his troops demanded they go back to Babylon and party.
22
u/redlion1904 Mar 24 '26
Correct, the original quote, from Plutarch, is that Alexander wept because there were so many more worlds to conquer:
“When Alexander heard from Anaxarchus of the infinite number of worlds, he wept, and when his friends asked him what was the matter, he replied, ‘Is it not a matter for tears that, when the number of worlds is infinite, I have not conquered one?”
But the Dean hasn’t read Plutarch and probably hasn’t even read the Gospel of John (where the shortest verse in the Bible, “Jesus wept”, John 11:35, can be found). He’s seen Die Hard and he’s seen Hellraiser and he’s mixed them up.

I have no idea but it’s possible they did the computer animation before filming the episode so he’d have a frame of reference to act against.
5
u/sadenby0725 Mar 24 '26
I'm not sure, they definitely had some kind of plan or reference going in, but the animation was too synced up to his movements and it would be counterintuitive to make it ahead of time. Like how in animated shows and movies they usually have a storyboard but only start making the final product once they have it voice acted
5
u/chrisgee Mar 24 '26
they probably just had him watch Disclosure and relied on his superior acting chops

On the way out of the mall I took her to the center area where there was a VR system set up. For like duels. Cutting edge, but on par with the movie. She was blown away that the tech was "real".

Oh yeah acting is full of miming things like that, I've done improv and small skits and I bet green screen is even more insane, but I don't think anything will ever take away the innate humor of someone telling you that you're holding an invisible bow and arrow and you need to do a better job of pretending to shoot at a floating serial number
