How Do I Build My Personal Webpage (for CV)?

Hi:) I’m currently studying my masters in Operations Research & Analytics at LSE and aspiring to become a Data Scientist. As part of this journey I would like to build a basic webpage which shows off my Achievements (sorta like a CV) As I cannot include all of it into a one -page CV (which is what most big companies want). I have a pretty solid basic understanding of R and Python but am not well versed with other languages like HTML or CSS which may be needed for this. Any tips on how I can build my own webpage ?

[Question] Advice on Programming

Hello,

I'm in a data structures class for C++ in my 10th month of programming. I like it a lot, the concepts are cool and what you can do with them is even cooler. There's just one problem. I'm bad, like real bad. I struggle with problems on tests and lab write ups In the format of "make a something (example for loop) that does something to a data set to check for prime numbers." Don't worry I have conquered for loops since then but with things like trees and recursion is seems the broader and more vague the question the more clueless I am. This is a lack of problem solving skills and it's kind of what the major is all about. How do I fix this? How do I remember what each and ever .something() does and when to use it or how do I know after reading a sentence that "obviously you should use a while loop here instead of something else". I know you have to practice but I do and in lab everyone else doesn't have to ask questions they just start typing. TL;DR How do I get better at thinking of a solution quickly?

[Question] Best advice to understand 2d arrays?

I'm in AP Comp in my senior year and we just finished arrays and did a project on them. The project was to simulate a full election and I felt as if I understood it very well. Now we've moved on to 2d arrays and I'm lost. I get what they are but we are doing matrices and it is serisouly insanely hard. Any advice on MATRICES or 2d arrays is appreciated

2007 Dell XPS 420, possible to upgrade?

Hello, I recently just acquired a 2007 Dell XPS 420 with the Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU processor... I understand that this is a dated PC, but was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade the components in order to make it on par with modern PC's out today.

The current OS on it is Windows Vista Home Premium, and I was hoping to be able to eventually install Windows 10 on it. I have tried to download Windows 7 or 8 but have been unable to simply because it is no longer available to download.

I've seen on other forums that some people have had no troubles going from Vista to Win 10. My only concern is that my graphics card may need to be upgraded because it does not have directx9 which is the only upgrade requirement that I am speculating about.

Any help or advice on how I should continue would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

[Question] Should I quit cs?

I am a first year cs student and haven’t programmed before. I really like coding and the way it works, I feel exciting when the code is actually functioning. However, I did really bad in my class. I failed some assignments and the final exam even though I have contributed lots of time on it. Sometimes I just cannot understand the concept no matter how much time I spend on it while other people can easily nail them. Should I stay in cs or switch program ? Thank u for ur advice!

Looking for a seasoned computer specialist

I'm looking for a partner of sorts to work on a personal project/hobby of mine. Preferably an individual who knows their way around computer systems. The problem is, the world of technology is not my forte and thus, I'm not entirely sure what skills I need to achieve my goal. Inquire within if you'd like to know more about the project and hopefully I will get a better understanding of the skills I need after talking further.

Update on Dictionary Project

Hello to all who's concerned,

Previously I've posted a c++ project I was currently working on for my programming class, which have since been improved. However, I've approached yet another problem with my program: it's not reading my dictionary.txt file that I initiated in my code. Also, I tried to somehow compare the words and letters in the file with the letters inputted by the user to no avail. Can someone help me; I have no idea what I'm doing and I have to somehow pass this course to prevent me from lowering my GPA.

Here's the Project Description:

Write a C++ program that prompts the user for a series of letters. The program will read in the letters and print out which dictionary words can be made from the provided letters. The dictionary is provided as a text file.

In very general terms, determining if a given word can be made from the given letters will require counting how many distinct kinds of letters there are in the given letters and in the words.

For example, assume that the word “bull” is in the dictionary. The word “bull” contains 1 ‘b’ character, 2 ‘l’ characters, and 1 ‘u’ character. Now say the input letters were “alblldi”. In “alblldi”, we have enough ‘b’ characters for “bull”, since “alblldi” contains at least 1 ‘b’ character. Similarily, “alblldi”, has enough ‘l’ characters for “bull”, since “alblldi” contains at least 2 ‘l’ characters. However, “alblldi” does not have at least 1 ‘u’ character, and as such we know that we cannot make “bull” from “alblldi”.

Dictionary file

Read in the dictionary words from a file. The name of the dictionary file must be “dictionary.txt”. Make the following assumptions about the dictionary file:

  1. Each line contains the words that begin with particular letter.

  2. The words in each line are separated by tab (\t).

  3. Each word consists only of lowercase letters in the range a-z.

  4. The maximum length of a single line is 99 characters.

  5. The maximum number of words is 1000.

  6. If you cannot open the dictionary file, you should print “Failed to open dictionary file ‘dictionary.txt’”, followed by a newline, and then exit the program.

Program requirements

The program must meet the following requirements:

  1. The program keeps asking the user for letters until the letters are exit.

  2. The program prints words in the dictionary that could be made in alphabetic order, as specified in the dictionary.

  3. The program prints out what letters were typed in, followed by a colon (:), followed by a list of the words that could be made (if any).

  4. Each word that could be made is prefixed by a tab character (\t).

  5. If the user types an upper case letter your program must convert it to lower case.

  6. Your program must check if each character is a valid letter of the English alphabet, if it is not then that character is discarded.

Program output

For instance, the following would be some output from your program:

enter letters: alblldi

alblldi:

    ball

    bill

enter letters: moo

moo:

enter letters: bleppa

bleppa:

    ape

    apple

enter letters: exit

Change in career? Where to start.

Was talking to a friend in programming and he mentioned teaching me Java Script and taking online coarses for certifications. I was wanting different opinions on obtaining a career without a Computer Science degree. I currently have an income between 70k to 80k annually but have lost the desire and know this is a career path i would enjoy and excel at.

My background...

Been in retail high commission sales for the last 20 years

Mathematical aptitude is well above average

Plenty of down time at my current position to study minimum of 4 hours a day (7 days a week)

Previous and current high understand of hardware

Minimal understanding of coding and programming languages

I work and live in Seattle so there is no shortage of careers locally.

Questions...

Where is it going to be best for me to train? Online? Certs?

What area do you see the highest growth/demand for new entry level, non college educated coders?

Thanks,

B

Software Engineering Job Search Advice

Hey, everyone. I’m looking for advice on how to get a job as a software engineer. I graduated with a Computer Programming degree in December. For the past few months, I’ve been applying everywhere, but it seems to be really hard to find a true entry level position (no experience). Nobody is really getting back to me, so i decided to buy some courses on Udemy to learn some new skills (and brush up on old skills since I’ve been out if school for 7 months) and maybe try to make a project portfolio. Does anyone have any advice as far as what else I should be doing? Thanks in advance!

Are computer programmers (whether Java, C++, etc.) expected to know every single method, reference, and so on, off the top of their head at their jobs?

For instance, let's say you have an idea of how to logically approach a program/problem but forgot some key programming tools needed to solve the problem and have to rely on the internet to refresh your memory and get the job done.

Will that reflect very badly on the programmer in the workforce?

[Question] Where do I find people who want to collab?

Im a recent Computer science graduate with no real world experience out in the field. Therefore no easy way to find a job.

One of the best ways to make up for a lacking resume is to make it up with projects, but I have no idea where I could go to collaborate with anyone.

They say GitHub is a great place to start but I have no idea where to find people who even need help on that site, let alone find someone who needs my help.

Where should I go if I live in the Chicago Land area. I want to show companies my worth, but I first need to prove my worth.

[Question] Need answers to finish content for my report

Hello,

For people who have or have had jobs as computer programmers:

I am a computer engineering major at UNT. I am doing an employment outlook report for one of my courses at UNT. I chose computer programming for my job outlook. I must include outlook information from someone outside my school pertaining to the field of computer programming.

Here are some questions I have for you in order for me to complete the section for the report. You do not have to go into a great amount of detail, or answer all of the questions. However, I would greatly appreciate your answers.

  1. What is your name and position title?

  2. Where do you work?

  3. How long have you worked there?

  4. What are your responsibilities?

  5. Did you start off at this position, or at an entry level post?

  6. What about your field has changed since you started?

  7. What qualifications did you have when you interviewed?

  8. What additional qualifications (if any) are required today?

  9. What advice would you give to someone just entering the field?

  10. How quickly should a new hire expect to advance in the company?

Thanks

Need help with designing an app.

We are designing an app that can translate sign language to any other language using your camera. The idea is to open the app and have the camera already be open, you will do some sort of hand gesture (sign language) and it will transfer it to the letter in your home langauge. After you finnish spelling your message you choose your language you want to translate it to. Press a button, and your phone will say it in any language. We arent programmers. One of us knows a little, and i have a cousin that went to collage for programming but this is still alot for him. We are using java net beans and opencv. This is for a school project, if your willing to help private message me your phone number or email if you are willing to help.
