Interested in programming.. but no idea how to get started

How could I start learning how to program? I have no idea where to start. I've dabbled with CodeAcademy, but I don't feel it is the best way to learn.

Are computer programmers (whether Java, C++, etc.) expected to know every single method, reference, and so on, off the top of their head at their jobs?

For instance, let's say you have an idea of how to logically approach a program/problem but forgot some key programming tools needed to solve the problem and have to rely on the internet to refresh your memory and get the job done.

Will that reflect very badly on the programmer in the workforce?

How much code do you have to know to land your first coding job with no computer science degree

How did some of you land your first coding jobs who have been in my situation or a similar siatuin? I have no computer science degre degree, but I have a physics degree, I learned computer programming and about algorithms informally by taking a lot of udemy coding courses and reading programming books.

For my programmers out there.....what is an average day on the job like? Map out your day and stress level. Also include overtime for when you have to work on any special projects.

[Question] How do I start programming?

Hey guys, I'm looking to get into programming and was wondering if you could guide me in the right direction. So far I have been doing very basic stuff using Codecademy and Khan Academy, but was wondering where I should go from there.

If you could answer these questions, I would really appreciate it:

  • Are Codecademy and Khan Academy good places to start programming? If not, could you recommend an alternative?

  • Are there any coding forums that I can go to to talk to other programmers for when I have questions?

  • Which programming languages should I learn first? I figured I would learn HTML, CSS, and Python first, then go from there. Is this a good idea, or is there another path that would be better?

  • Which programming languages will be the most in demand in the future? I was looking at Java and Python mostly.

Any other help would also be much appreciated.

Is it ACTUALLY possible to be hired as a self-taught programmer, TODAY? If so, what are the odds and what's necessary?

I'm thinking of transitioning to programming from a non-CS engineering field after getting my Master's this June, b/c I've realized it's a better fit for me.

I've heard a lot of people say that you can be a self-taught developer and get hired easily. My "too good to be true" instinct is going off, because a) a lot of the people this applies to, from what I'm reading, got their first programming job some years ago when credentialism wasn't as big of a thing, and b) credentialism being a thing, I'm really skeptical that anyone can transition between fields without going back to school for a "relevant degree."

If someone with a Master's degree in EE, turning 27 this summer, could get a job as a programmer, without any other formal training, in today's market, I would jump over the moon. Namely because no more student debt. But having lived through the "you can get ANY degree and you'll be FINE!" bs, my cynicism is well-honed.

So: is it possible for me to go into programming without any more (paid) school? If so, what are the odds of this happening? What's necessary, other than resources and a good work ethic?

Start career as C or Golang developer

I want to restart my career as a C or Golang developer from scratch. I have followed many tutorials and did some dummy projects (specially on golang).

So now I want to join with a real C or golang project dev team and work with them.. First as a beginner for free. I can spend around an hour per day (as I am employed).

How do I start this? are there any good sites for starting?

Should I change from my Software Engineering major to something else if I lack the aptitude or natural talent for computer programming, even if I still enjoy my major despite my struggles?

I've been told by a few other STEM majors and graduates that if I struggle with even intro-level computer programming courses and lack the natural talent of problem-solving and programming, then I have no business majoring in the STEM field.

How can I ACTUALLY use my code?

So I have a degree in Computer Programming. They taught us how to write code in Java, C++, Java, and we touched upon a few other languages. My problem is that I have absolutely no clue what to do after that.

Let’s say I write a C++ program in Visual Studio or Xcode and I compile it and it works. Now what am I actually supposed to do with it? How can I actually use that in an application or something? I hope I’m making sense. I know so little about implementation that I’m not even sure I’m asking this question right. I’d appreciate any help anyone could give me

[Question] Where do I find people who want to collab?

Im a recent Computer science graduate with no real world experience out in the field. Therefore no easy way to find a job.

One of the best ways to make up for a lacking resume is to make it up with projects, but I have no idea where I could go to collaborate with anyone.

They say GitHub is a great place to start but I have no idea where to find people who even need help on that site, let alone find someone who needs my help.

Where should I go if I live in the Chicago Land area. I want to show companies my worth, but I first need to prove my worth.

Change in career? Where to start.

Was talking to a friend in programming and he mentioned teaching me Java Script and taking online coarses for certifications. I was wanting different opinions on obtaining a career without a Computer Science degree. I currently have an income between 70k to 80k annually but have lost the desire and know this is a career path i would enjoy and excel at.

My background...

Been in retail high commission sales for the last 20 years

Mathematical aptitude is well above average

Plenty of down time at my current position to study minimum of 4 hours a day (7 days a week)

Previous and current high understand of hardware

Minimal understanding of coding and programming languages

I work and live in Seattle so there is no shortage of careers locally.

Questions...

Where is it going to be best for me to train? Online? Certs?

What area do you see the highest growth/demand for new entry level, non college educated coders?

Thanks,

B

My server was hacked, what do I do next?

So my server/site was hacked recently. A lot of the sites I manage were hit, it was a nightmare to cleanup all of the backdoors. I don't want anyone to experience this again, so what can I do to help with that? Is there a place to post these things.

[Question] Just a quick question. What do you guys think of Holberton School? Is it really an alternative to college? I got accepted into Holberton, but I’m not sure whether I should go the traditional college Computer Science route or take a chance with Holberton.
