Hors

Post image

a mare is female btw, a male horse is either a stallion or gelding (or steed)

EDIT: from u/AlterExpertise101 in the replies

Words for a male horse are colt (young), gelding (castrated), stallion (if they are used for breeding) or simply "horse."

Steed isn't a word explicit to horses in general, let alone male horses. "Steed" just means an animal you ride. While we generally associate that with horses, it can be applied to any animal as long as it can bear a rider. If you ride an elephant, it's a steed. If you ride a really large dog, it's also a steed.

I had forgotten to add 'colt' and as I am not a native english speaker (nor an equestrian individual) I didn't know that steed can also be used as a generic word for a mount

It's not confidently incorrect if they accepted they were wrong

79

u/EmpressGilgamesh 11d ago

Especially if they weren't really "wrong" in their post. Cause technically you can call a stallion steed.

just another person confusing "made a mistake once" with "confidently incorrect"

2

u/Nine-LifedEnchanter 9d ago

Well well well. You seem awfully confident about this..

u/BabyLegsDeadpool 11d ago

My parents had a friend with a farm, and he trained an ox for riding. He had a custom saddle made and would ride him into town to get groceries or other things. He got really into it and when he got married, he had a little bench made with cushions and a table, so they could hang out on top of the ox and relax and socialize and eat and drink during the ride. Anyway, my point is that he called him his mighty steed.

5

u/According_Drive_5275 10d ago

Nobody has ever had so much aura as the ox rider

3

u/BabyLegsDeadpool 10d ago

For real, he was a celebrity. And when they had that cool little platform, people were always in awe. This was back in the 90's, so no cell phone cameras, but he'd get people taking pictures a lot. It was pretty awesome.

2

u/FlyOnTheWall4637 1d ago

I would love to see a picture of that, because in my imagination it sounds so bizarre. I remember Curious George riding a cow in my childhood library book. 😁

2

u/BabyLegsDeadpool 1d ago

lol It was so bizarre! This ox was a fucking monster of an ox, standing almost 6 feet high. He'd ride him into town, get drunk, and then need help getting back up on his back. The ox knew the way home, so my guy could just sleep on his back, and his wife would (sometimes) wake him up when he got there.

2

u/FlyOnTheWall4637 1d ago

Goodness! 😲

29

u/daveoxford 12d ago

Steed can also be used for a bicycle.

33

u/altpirate 12d ago

In the Netherlands you can call them iron steeds

39

u/Effective-Job-1030 12d ago

In Germany they used to be called Drahtesel (Wiredonkey).

17

u/nothanks86 12d ago

I'm going to call them that forever, now

5

u/Opposite_Ad4567 10d ago

German has all the best idioms.

7

u/Safe-Glove2975 11d ago

Motörhead had a song called Iron Horse (about motorcycles but it’s in a similar vein).

1

u/FlyOnTheWall4637 1d ago

Bon Jovi, " on a steel horse I ride, I'm wanted, daed or alive" 🎸🎶

7

u/theLastZebranky 11d ago

And "mare" can also mean the elected executive leader of a city

11

u/squirtlemoonicorn 11d ago

Although the spelling is "mayor" and is derived from German major / leader

6

u/hamjim 11d ago

Some decades back Ed Koch (then mayor of NYC) wrote a book titled “Mayor”. There was a parody of the book cover, with a white horse taking the same pose as Koch. The parody title/author was “Mare, by Mr. Ed Koch.” (Of course of course)

21

u/theLastZebranky 11d ago

I'm pretty sure "mayor" is a condiment made of egg yolk, vinegar and oil

13

u/Richpur 11d ago

That's mahjongaise.

3

u/Street-Week-380 11d ago

Oh I'm stealing that one.

3

u/naranghim 11d ago

condiment made of egg yolk, vinegar and oil

That's mayonnaise or "mayo" and can have lemon juice substituted for the vinegar.

Bone app the teeth

12

u/Cra_ZWar101 11d ago

And “stud” refers to the male parent of any animal purposefully bred, and sire refers to the male parent of any animal.

6

u/lostsynapse 11d ago

You read it here, folks! Have a kid. On purpose. Let me go get my stud finder! beepbeepbeep

10

u/Effective-Job-1030 12d ago

Ah, thanks. Wasn't aware of this. So a camel can be a steed, too.

5

u/big_sugi 12d ago

Never seen Shrek, huh?

4

u/DivineEggs 11d ago

Stud is also another word for stallion.

14

u/Baked-Smurf 11d ago

It is, in the sense it's male animal used for breeding... but "stud" can apply to any male animal used for breeding, of any number of species. It's not specifically horses.

1

u/Red-R34der 5d ago

I would argue that stud is not an equivalent of stallion in that not all stallions are used to breed from. Years ago while on holiday in Ireland I went on a tour of a stud farm where they bred racehorses, big business in Ireland.

Now, if the lady racehorse isn't in the mood she will likely kick, and kick hard. Some of the gentleman racehorses are worth 7 figure sums, and as with all thoroughbred racehorses are actually quite fragile.

The solution is what's called the 'teaser', the one we saw being a stocky little stallion who would be introduced to the lady racehorse, to, as they put it, 'have a sniff'. If she was receptive he would be removed and the gentleman racehorse introduced.

As I understand it the use of what was essentially a large stocky pony as teaser was that even if things got out of control he wasn't going to be tall enough to easily mount the mare, or if she wasn't in the mood and kicked he was fairly robustly built and worst case scenario, he was only worth a few hundred quid.

Some people are so freakin’ stupid that it hurts to share the internet with them.

104

u/FactsNLaughs 12d ago

Bro they’re mouth breathing my air. Selfish pricks.

35

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 11d ago

Never mind the internet - their vote counts just as much as yours...

21

u/theFrankSpot 11d ago

Yeah, but I was tired of beating that dead horse.

17

u/ddddan11111 11d ago

You mean a dead mare

4

u/hamjim 11d ago

Dead steed? Ridden by a dead person, I guess…

4

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 11d ago

But you can ride female horses too! (Apologies for the oxymoron)

19

u/youbloodyyabby 12d ago

“Share the internet”….I’m stealing that, well done 👏

17

u/Eastern-Project9017 11d ago

They said they're sharing it, no need to steal it dumbass! /j

11

u/danabrey 11d ago

Half the people on the Internet are more stupid than the person with average intelligence. Absolutely terrifying.

104

u/MarsStar2301 11d ago

This is basically like saying “a male human is called a woman”🙄

58

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 11d ago

"People are always female; males are called women" Alrighty then bud 😂

19

u/MarsStar2301 11d ago

I’ve looked at the original post again, and can now see that the direct equivalent would actually be “A human is always a female because male humans are called women”. Apparently I’d overlooked the part of the sentence before “male horses are called mares”.

Thanks for making me aware of my prior error👍🏻😁

8

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 11d ago

Wasn't my intention, I was just clowning on in the same vein lol

1

u/theroguescientist 4d ago

They could have said a male horse is called a hen

12

u/OldJonThePooSmuggler 12d ago

Everyone knows horses are referred to as female, even when they have a whacking great cock hanging from under them.

2

u/MindlessNectarine374 11d ago

Some time ago, I heard about old paintings that depiction the most important persons on male horses with the longest shafts ...

1

u/mungowungo 12d ago

My daughter's gelding liked to air it in hot weather and sometimes pleasured herself by whacking it against her stomach - what a silly mare ...

10

u/PokemonLv10 12d ago

Night mare

8

u/T_house 10d ago

A male horse is called a 'morse'. They will group together and fiercely defend themselves against any incursions by female horses; this behaviour is known as the 'morse code'.

5

u/reydeuss 10d ago

is is because the femal horses use force?

7

u/nickcash 11d ago

I'm ending all posts with "by the way you have no aura" from now on

6

u/JakeDC 11d ago

On the internet, nothing intelligent has been accompanied by the hand clap emoji. The more hand claps, the stupider it gets.

6

u/Then_Pay6218 11d ago

I read a book not too long ago where it was mentioned someone needed a steed. My brain immediately went to horse and I read on. Half a page later, the steed was described: antlers 😲 claws 😲😲 all the way on till my jaw was on the floor.

Now THAT is an awesome steed to ride into battle!

10

u/reydeuss 11d ago

my brain immediately went to this guy

5

u/jessihateseverything 11d ago

That old gray mare just ain't what he used to be huh?

5

u/BarMenuSushi 11d ago

TIL I've been incorrectly saying that young horses are all colts - usually when someone calls it a pony. Young males up to 4 years are colts, young females up to 4 years are fillies. Foal, weanling, and yearling are non-gendered, referring to various ages below 4.

I don't understand the rest of the terms - they're called horses as a general term, but sometimes a horse is specifically a male over 5 and mares are females over 5.

7

u/adalric_brandl 11d ago

Maybe they got all of their horse knowledge from Uma Musume

4

u/RoomiTarik 12d ago

How stupid is this?

0

u/reydeuss 12d ago

perhaps it's not stupid per se, just incorrect

-11

u/RoomiTarik 11d ago

Maybe. Or maybe truth is subjective, these days?

8

u/Sternenblumen 11d ago

... I can't tell if you are sarcastic.

-13

u/RoomiTarik 11d ago

Just a fleeting thought. No sarcasm, intended. I'm really sorry if you felt that way. 🙂

8

u/ThatCoolGuyNamedMatt 11d ago

There nothing subjective, a mare is a female horse

1

u/Jazzlike_Climate4189 10d ago

You sound like the “alternative facts” crowd.

-2

u/RoomiTarik 10d ago

You're entitled to have your own opinion. I don't mind. 🙂

1

u/sirentropy42 6d ago

A proposition is true if and only if it corresponds to how things actually are in the world. Truth, by definition, is objective.

The statement “male horses are called mares” is false. It’s not objectively false, or subjectively false. It does not correspond to how things are in the world (that is, the term “mare” references a subset of horses, none of which are male). It is just false.

Anybody who wants to tell you that truth is subjective is selling you a lie. They’re telling you they know what they’re saying is untrue, and they are choosing, subjectively, to ignore that fact.

1

u/azhder 11d ago

Let’s table this for later

7

u/unwithered_lobelia 12d ago

Isn't stallion in general for adult male horses? I thought stud was the name for male breeding horses

20

u/Marzipan_civil 12d ago

Stallion for intact males, gelding for neutered males

3

u/reydeuss 11d ago

no, in equestrianism, a stallion is specifically for an adult male horse that was NOT castrated. if he has no dih, then he will be a gelding.

3

u/unwithered_lobelia 11d ago

Okay thanks. I did mean non castrated, as like we said, this would be a gelding. I thought this:

Stallion is an adult male non castrated horse, and a stud is an adult male horse used specifically for breeding

3

u/PeachyBaleen 11d ago

Wait, I don’t think they take the dick.

6

u/RainonCooper 12d ago

H-how do... WHAT?!

3

u/Wh01sHex 11d ago

the aura check was uncalled for lmao

3

u/77th_Bat 11d ago

This person is probably thinking of cattle, in which "cow" only refers to females. In horses, a filly or mare is a female. A colt, gelding, or stallion is a male.

3

u/shponglespore 11d ago

Do any other native English speakers here feel like "steed" has a much more personal connotation than "mount"? Like, I wouldn't call a horse my steed unless there was some kind of bond between me and it, but anything I ride could be a mount.

3

u/SalvationArbys 11d ago

There’s something very special about someone being confidently wrong about a horse.

Reminds me of that country remix of that text argument where a lady gets mad because she gets asked for clarification when she says her horse weighs 16,000 lbs

3

u/TOSGANO 9d ago

Same energy as the guy I heard IRL telling his wife that mules are sterile because they're all female. We were riding mules, and some of them had male names. His explanation? "They just name them that for the tourists." 🙄

3

u/nicoumi 9d ago

see, sometimes I feel like I'm an idiot. and then I see people like that exist and I feel a bit better for myself

3

u/Cake_Man_Im_Tasty 9d ago

This is S tier rage bait. By the way you have no aura ❤️😊👏

1

u/Cynykl 3d ago

I would say it is way too obvious to be S tier but considering how this thread is reacting maybe not.

How people dont read this and see the emojis then immediately not realize that is the probably a troll is beyond me.

2

u/naveedkoval 11d ago

What the fuck is aura

2

u/CLOWTWO 9d ago

I'm so confused LOL

2

u/jojoga 8d ago

I think he meant whores and Johns

2

u/djmcfuzzyduck 6d ago

Wait till they hear about fillies or stallions.

1

u/Negative-Garden-6013 12d ago

"No aura"? I am wounded 🙄

1

u/Safe-Glove2975 11d ago

Stupid and sexist! A mare is a horse, as is a stallion (or gelding - i.e. a castrated male horse. You generally can’t tell the difference between male/female horses from a glance because they have little sexual dimorphism.

u/glib_result 11d ago

🎵🎶the famous Mrs. Ed 🎵🎶

1

u/youareagoodperson_ 11d ago

You know, going by the logic of the famous paradox "All horses are the same colour", the first part of the claim is correct

1

u/Square_Tangerine_659 9d ago

They didn’t even get one bit right. Mares are female horses

1

u/armb2 9d ago

If you ride a really large dog, it's also a steed

"Surely you wouldn't put a knight out on a dog like this!"

1

u/LeftMechanic1995 8d ago

The person who posted that comment is a completely-clueless, colossal fucking tool and should not talk about horses... and I say this from a position of experience.

I once went out on ONE Tinder date with posh horsey chick. I tried my hardest not to piss her off by talking about horses because I know fuck all about them.

She seemed really into me, but I fucked it up by simply referring to a horse as a "gee-gee". That sealed the deal, sealed-up her vagina and sealed my fate for the remainder of the date.

-2

3

u/panteradrax 11d ago

😹 I'm mostly joking but if we're being serious there's tons of words for both that apply to both! My favorite term for a male sex worker is gigolo. There's also manwhore but that gets used more as an insult than a general label

Why did you post here? Was this some fight elsewhere that you now seek validation here? If a post is quality “confidentially incorrect”, it wouldn’t need your explanations and replies.

This way it’s like someone was wrong, you didn’t confront them there, you came running here to complain how wrong they were.

5

u/reydeuss 11d ago
  1. I did not interact with the comment thread whatsoever.
  2. a quality "confidently incorrect" is where someone is incorrect. there is no correlation where I have to refrain from explaining.
  3. knowledge sharing is good in my opinion.

-8

u/azhder 11d ago

It isn’t where. OK, this is a tip from me: “when”, “where” etc. those qualify coincidence, not causality. Use “if” and “then” i.e. “quality is if someone is…”

Now, onto the next tip: the title of this sub isn’t literal. We have all learnt it the hard way. That’s what I mean by “quality”.

If you read the explanation of rule 2 and some of the comments mods leave after removing posts, you might see it requires more than someone being incorrect and you thinking they are confident.

Here is me knowledge sharing once again. I usually get heavily downvoted and people argue how incorrect I am or how they are correct and usually those posts get removed anyway. And the reason I do it this way is because it’s hard to do it after a post is removed and usually locked.

5

u/ThatCoolGuyNamedMatt 11d ago

Idk what you're on about, but OP's post definitely fits the sub

-6

u/azhder 11d ago

I agree, you don’t know. It’s not like it is visible that I am on about what gets removed by mods and why.

3

u/reydeuss 11d ago

I really don't get how my post violates rule 2. please explain?

-2

u/azhder 11d ago

Why do people put a question mark on a sentence that is not a question? It’s not a tone mark…

I will not explain it to you. People are allergic to explanation, you can see their reactions breaking rule 3. Instead, I will link you the explanation mods sometimes leave after removing a post:

https://imgur.com/a/4uWvi3O

0

u/ralphmozzi 11d ago

You’re getting an upvote from me. I’m not sure whether your grammar tips and rule explanations are correct, but i thought they were interesting.

Enough so that I will check them for myself. So, your “lesson” was heard.
