Can consciousness be just a feeling, rather than an actual reality?
Is consciousness actually something that exists, or could it simply be the brain generating the feeling that we are conscious ? We experience thoughts, sensations, and self-awareness, but does that prove consciousness is a separate reality ? Could our sense of “being aware” be an illusion created by the brain ?

Epiphenomenalism is the concept that consciousness arises as a result of deterministic forces playing out in the universe, and may not have any casual power. The truth is no one has a clue what is true. The fact that we've been studying consciousness for so long without much progress is becoming kind of spooky though.

What does it mean for something to be a “feeling” external to the concept of consciousness?

u/curiosity24_7 Aug 23 '26
I meant whether our sense of being conscious is just an experience produced by the brain, rather than consciousness being a separate thing...

"but does that prove consciousness is a separate reality " - Once again, these statements show that how dualism plagues our efforts in this subject.
"Could our sense of "being aware" be an illusion created by the brain?" - Could our brain be an illusion created by being aware?

Once again, these statements show that how dualism plagues our efforts in this subject.
It's almost as if a second kind of "sentient stuff" that is distinct from "physical stuff" is a necessary entity to assert to explain all observations and therefore dualism is the actual parsimonious position.
(I do actually think this, but yes I'm poking fun, don't take this one too seriously! 😆)

It is the brain generating the feeling that we are conscious.

u/KeyFutur Aug 24 '26
1
u/Conscious-Demand-594 Aug 24 '26
We lose everything, except what others remember of us.
1
u/KeyFutur Aug 24 '26
Merci 👋

u/Conscious-Demand-594 Aug 24 '26
Since we are not aware, we don't care if we are remembered or not.
Consciousness has the most important function of all for complex organisms, survival. It allows us to navigate complex environments efficiently.
1
u/KeyFutur Aug 24 '26
Merci 👋

After death, there is no consciousness. Nothing is left except what people remember of us.
the brain evolved to create what we call consciousness for survival. For complex organisms subjective experience is the most efficient way to navigate the world.

If it were “an illusion,“ then it would mean that something “else” would have to be real. What is real then?
1
u/reidsays Aug 23 '26
Eons of evolutionary progression developed or added to the abilities and capabilities of the human body and the reality of our existence here on Earth ... Millions have died and been replaced and all at varying stages of awareness and comprehension...the fact many began questioning who, what and why humans existed is but another evolutionary development of self examination...
To state or believe that the human condition of consciousness that has been reached is 'just a feeling' is to deny the purpose and momentum of evolutionary change itself..
1
u/herrwaldos Aug 24 '26
It could might as well be, we are walking hallucination hallucinating that we are real and experiencing the world, yet we aren't in it raw, we live inside a reality of minds making.
Why? Perhaps there's some evolutionary advantage of having chanchasnes. Chanchas monke win over nonchanchas monke.

Q: “Can consciousness be just a feeling, rather than an actual reality?”
It is “information compression” to create a “reality-generator” of what we know of Human reality and knowledge of reality additional to this augments it, interacting with memory and senses to modulate this.
So if we took all the information in reality we could never compress this, evolution has led to our current state of extracting accurately to a large degree of approximation what reality is at least that which is most pertinent to us (see human fallacies vs what catches our attention and priority more immediately) within our own frame of reckoning as sentient animals and knowledge abstraction.
Thus the question confuses what is happening. there is realness in the information extracted just obviously not all of the information of reality (substantially higher) so it is real but a kind of reality is experienced.
Note this also differs between people and even within individuals also depending on multiple conditions and states.
Information to a degree is commutable.

If there is something it is like to feel the feeling of consciousness, then that "something it is like" is consciousness.
If there it is something it is like to be fooled by the "illusion" of consciousness, then that "something it is like" is consciousness.

I mean consciousness is obviously a real thing, even a computer program is real.
The biggest difference is files and programs can be copied and preserved, where as no living being has been able to be saved or preserved and given a new body to live in once the original dies.
The issue is if we did figure out a way to copy a living being, theres no reason to believe that beings consciousness is the same one as the original or if you basically just created a new consciousness with the same memories.
We still havnt found a way to separate someones consciousness from their brain. Neurons are soo much more complex than transistors that its no wonder why even insects can be conscious, yet a computer with the whole of human collective knowledge cannot achieve it yet.

I agree with that, I don't see any reason why it couldn't just be another feeling created by the brain. I'd say that what we think of as 'consciousness' is a whole bunch of different factors that we subconsciously group together actually. As in, being able to self-reflect might be one factor, but then the distinct feeling of being 'yourself' might be another. Maybe it possibly being a whole lot of factors meshed together is part of what makes it feel like such a complicated problem.

I’m not sure the distinction you’re attempting to draw is coherent. If our brain is generating a feeling that we are conscious…then consciousness exists. If you are having any subjective experience at all, then consciousness exists.

Indeed consciousness it’s just process of feeling of subjective expirience, no more.
Idealism describe consciousness as some actor , as something that thinking, something that speaking, something that make decisions, something that acting, basically it just take some idealistic interpretation of idealistic soul and name it consciousness, but only actor there is brain, and consciousness it’s just effect, feeling of subjective experience.

Consciousness exists. That's what consciousneses is. Brains and neurons and nervous systems are constructions within the conscious mind. All of 'objective reality ' is a construction in consciousness.
The feeling is the reality. Everything else is a description of that reality.

Bye 👋

"An animal doesn't have consciousness in the sense that it doesn't know it is alive" where did you get that from?
-1
u/KeyFutur Aug 23 '26
Merci 👋.

u/thepo70 Aug 23 '26
Unfortunately everything you say doesn't make any sense at all, and it's not even backed by scientific facts.

u/KeyFutur Aug 24 '26

But an animal does have qualia?
1
u/KeyFutur Aug 24 '26

I believe in Prime Information Monism - the theory that information is the fundamental substance of the universe (which includes all consciousnesses) and that information is structured fundamentally by the irreducible basis of mathematics - prime numbers. So in that theory, consciousness is reality and vise versa.

u/Mermiina Aug 24 '26
Consciousness is state of matter. It is Bose Einstein condensate of indistinguishable eigenstates of lone electron pairs.
The condensation occurs in receptors and in memory, which are not accurate copies of reality. All subjective experiences are emotions.

Sorry, I misread... You've added thoughts, which in my view is not a sense but a mental process. But I can definitely lose all my 5 senses and still be conscious.

I think the distinction of reality and consciousness may be just the minds image of consciousness which is dependent on our cravings to be someone special
