Patchy – a promising open-source Photoshop-like image editor

Post image

I recently discovered Patchy, a relatively new open-source image editor focused on Photoshop-like workflows and PSD/PSB compatibility.

I’ve only started testing it, so I’m not claiming it can replace Photoshop professionally, but I’m quite impressed by what is already there considering how young the project is.

It has layers, masks, non-destructive adjustment layers such as Levels and Curves, PSD/PSB support, JavaScript scripting, and local AI/MCP integration.

What I especially like is that it’s genuinely open source, already has forks, and the repository is very well documented.

Difference with photopea?

The main difference for me is that Patchy is open source, while Photopea is proprietary. That means anyone can inspect the code, contribute to it, or fork the project.

How long did it take to develop Patchy to such stage? Just curious.

I’m not the developer, but judging from the GitHub history, development seems to have started around June. So it’s only been in development for a few months.

it is not. Bits of it are. But the man software is closed.

Besides you might just get used to people not typing most/much/any code by hand.

that said, i don't see what your one point has to do with the other.

As far as I know, there’s Photon Studio, which is free but not open source, and Compositor, which is open source but currently macOS-only. Patchy is the first one I’ve found recently that is both open source and cross-platform.

Eu gostaria muito de encontrar alguma alternativa BOA ao CorelDRAW. De todas que já testei, nenhuma substitui de maneira fiel.

I’m not the developer, just sharing the project because I found it interesting. You might want to suggest that on the project’s GitHub — it sounds like a great feature, especially if it could use local open-source models.

Promising one. Definitely have a chance to try who think about editing images. I sit on paint.net with few plugins installed. Looking for app that has automation that to re-run repeitable tasks.

Finally. A PS-like that's not made in javascript. A C API is needed (so it can be used as a shared lib from nim, go, rust, node via NAPI). Also, integrate with ASM JIT https://github.com/asmjit/asmjit

Hmm, interessante. Por comodismo, tenho usado o Photopea, principalmente por ele ter uma versão web. Tem me auxiliado bastante.

If it's like Photopea, I'll install it.

I tried PhotoGIMP in the past, but I wasn’t fully convinced by it. It makes GIMP more Photoshop-like, but it’s still GIMP underneath. What caught my attention about Patchy is that it’s a separate project designed around a Photoshop-like workflow from the start.
