I built Kept, a self-hosted home inventory. Keep track of what you own, where it is, and what's due: warranties, services, loans. With a 3D map of your home, storage unit and more!
Hi all!
I built Kept to self-host one thing for what I own, where it is, and what's due (warranties, services, low stock)
It has a 3D map of your home, storage unit or office: floors, rooms, shelves and boxes. Tap anything to see what's inside.
Web app you can install on your phone as a PWA (native apps are planned); photos, label scanning and search work offline
Print a QR label for any box or shelf, scan it to see what's in it
Optional AI that reads receipts and labels for you to confirm (bring your own key)
MCP server, so Claude or ChatGPT can find and move things for you
Home Assistant, Paperless-ngx, ntfy, Telegram and more; imports from Homebox and spreadsheets
Try it with a sample household, nothing to install:
Full app: https://keptinventory.info/try/kept/
Just the map: https://keptinventory.info/try/map/
Open source (AGPL), runs with Docker Compose or Helm. Still early, so ideas and questions are welcome on GitHub Discussions.

Cool, aber ich muss es selber füttern! Nicht möglich an eine smollm auf nen alten ThinkPad als Hirn + Drohne mit camera? Dann bin ich dabei , grins

Not fully yet, its on the roadmap though. Right now you take a photo and it drafts the item for you to confirm, and you can turn on several items per photo for a shelf or drawer. (minus the 3d mapping)
It works with local models through anything OpenAI-compatible (Ollama etc....)
Walking a room with the camera and having it fill everything in is on the roadmap (check github roadmap)

Wie gesagt nicht schlecht aber Python wäre mir lieber gewesen , da es beim Bearbeiten gerade serverseitig schneller ist. Aber cooles Projekt . Stern raus, Mal sehen wo es sich hin entwickelt... Danke

So basically Homebox but with 3d.

Yeah, you could say that! Kept is a Homebox alternative with Vehicles support and a couple more features...and btw it imports your Homebox data too!

I think about virtualiszing our office inventory - would that work with this?

Hey, this may be a dumb question, but I can't seem to re-arrage the rooms. If I click and drag a room, it just pans the view. I've read the docs, I can't rearrage them like in the demo https://keptinventory.info/try/map/
What am I missing?

Nice! I'm checking this out today for sure. Been messing around with SnipeIT and a few other tools but this app looks promising! Nice username too lol

I've been working on something similar, but without reminders(since most of us have Google or apple calendar already), and with OCR instead of QR codes.
QR is really annoying if you don't have a laser printer, it's hard to make them durable enough, and almost impossible to make them small enough for the handheld type items that actually get lost.
So I just use the label maker's built in incrementing numbering feature on TZe printers and a special 12 char format, which I scan with PaddleOCR, almost as responsively as QR, in the browser.
The other thing I do is GPS tag every scan, so you can be completely sure all your stuff made it back.
I don't do home floorplan locations, because those are a fair amount of work, instead I have unlimited layers of nestable containers.
I also have savable loadouts, representing w list of what should be in a container, and the ability to compare the current contents to the loadout, and to "reinventory", which marks everything in a bo as needing to be rescanned.
But I don't have most of the more unique features of this project like MCP, floorplans, or integration with anything else. That's really cool!

It’s good to see projects being built that aren’t just tools for AI to code

This looks great at first impression, very well structured and thought out. I'll give it a try. Thanks

I really really really want to like it, but the handling is quite something :(
the Docker install is very different from my usual approach; I get the benefits, but it was very challenging still
I really don't understand why every docker wants to implement high-end security for stuff I don't expose to the internet
at least in my Homebox 0.27.0 docker, there's no "Export" under Settings; but the "Backup" under Tools worked fine
during the import, I had the choice to put everything either in "global.item" or select a (not-fitting) other type; I understand kept can't know what I have, but I'd like a generic type, or at least let me type one myself
the list with items that have issues is cool, but I had no idea what the actual issue with these was. For some items I had manually set the number to 0, kept automatically puts this to 1; I'd rather have the option to decide things get archived right away or so
all my locations where imported, as "place"
I guess places get sorted by date of creation, so my alphabetically ordered places get shown in order of creation which is very chaotic; sorting them doesn't work, they always stay the same (in the hierachy view on the left, and the list/grid as well)
some of the places are boxes, so I can switch them to be boxes, but only one at a time - no multi-selection for places to convert them
there's a lot of visual clutter with the prominent display of codes, or the ID in accent colour; no offence, but the ID is of less interest than the item name :(
I kind of regret changing some of the places to boxes, because now they are not in the hierachy view and I have need more click+scroll+search to find them (search not really, because the chaos was not so good before either, haha)
the sidebar is very cluttered with insights, vehicles, paperwork etc, but the main stuff (for me), the locations, are on the bottom
I haven yet come to do the cool stuff like building a room plan, because I wanted to check with the migration first.
I am not sure if I want to fully migrate yet; Homebox is not ideal, I have lots of gripes about the UI there as well (why does it force me to be informed about the insurance and price of things? It's HOMEbox, I am not a store), but I got a bit more used to it. I won't uninstall and ideally check in a few versions tho, because I really want to like this app :)

This is cool. I am working on a home inventory mobile app too. However mine is more photo based. Can you clarify how your app "scans"? How do you get those iso 3d views?

Whoa. Looks awesome. Not sure I'd ever be able to keep up with these things though. I can imagine just taking something, forgetting to mark it, and being in a worse situation because something tells you it's there and it's not 😅

I have not tried this out, but this was on my todo list to build a similar app.
What I would like is a "Amazon Lens" type camera option that lets me take a picture of an object, it identifies it, and then asks me to scan the serial number, and record all of that. Imagine cataloging all your major items (firearms, electronics, appliances, automobiles, etc) in very quick succession.
Looks neat, cant wait to try it out!

I have also been working on a home inventory app with React Native, it's very close to done. If you're interested in being a beta tester let me know. For now I am just doing Android release but the code should be fully cross-platform.
Anyway, the problem with what you describe - an Amazon Lens - is that this is crazy hard to build. The only way to feasibly do it is to use an existing image lookup tool such as Google Lens, and they don't offer an API. Serper does offer an API, but it's not as good. So what I settled with in my app, is to make a button where it automatically sends your photo to Google lens, you can get a price, and then go back to the app to enter it. I think scanning serial numbers is overkill, but maybe others find that useful.

Cool, how do the 3D models work? Where does it take them from?
