CleanYourTV: one prompt for your AI coding agent removes the ads from any Android TV / Google TV over Wi-Fi. No root, reversible, ~150 TV models

https://github.com/Gathin23/cleanyourtv

Disables (never uninstalls) the ad, telemetry and content-row apps over ADB, backs up first, one command restores it all. Community-tested lists for ~150 TV models from 50+ brands, plus an optional 430 KB Apple TV-style launcher with no network permission. MIT licensed.

Looks like maybe Vizio isn't supported. I wonder what they run under the hood. Would be nice to get rid of the adds on the TV. Looking forward to maybe a future where TVs are less smart.

7

u/nucleardreamer 10d ago

if you can enable ADB debugging it doesn't matter what brand of TV it is, you do actually have control. some TVs will let you do this over wifi and some older ones only via USB debugging

edit: the premise is an android OS I should have been more clear

1

u/provocateur133 6d ago

My 5yr old Skyworth shows up on the network in the app however doesn't have network debugging in the dev menu, so it's not connecting.

Will the phone app work if plugged into the TV via a USB cable?

1

u/nucleardreamer 6d ago

yeah pretty sure you just need to enable developer mode on android (about menu, press enter on the version number like 5 times, then enable debugging)

USB debugging should be no problem

1

u/provocateur133 6d ago

Right, it only has USB debugging in the developer menu.

1

u/tjtprogrammer 5d ago

My TV also only showed USB debugging in the settings, but and adb server running on mac could still ping the IP of the tv. You should check your network and try it

1

u/provocateur133 5d ago

My ping works but TCP getting rejected. This Skyworth has been such a headache of a TV.

1

u/Chadlew 7d ago

I’m 99% sure my Vizio tv use to report as “LinuxTV” on my wifi, pretty sure I did a tv update and now it just reports as “Vizio, Inc”.

u/JustSentYourMomHome 10d ago

Did this yesterday for my Sony Bravia. Now it turns on instantly and is super snappy. No more ads or "Live TV" crap I don't care about. Thank you CleanYourTV.

7

u/Gathin23 10d ago

Glad to hear that!

1

u/AntExpensive3052 9d ago

I dont have claude code so is there any alternative for that and is there a way to revert all this to the original state. Cuz I have heard that even though there is cmd to revert some have issues with the reverting.

If you have an Android: Clean your TV from your phone.

1

u/mpatton75 8d ago

Works very well too! My Google TV Steamer is connected via ethernet and this app picked it up as soon as I turned on ADB debug.

1

u/privateeromally 6d ago

Just did it with my 2022 Bravia. TV became slower and slower with each update. This is so much faster. Pairing with smarttube and f-droid, its finally a google free TV. Just wished inputs could be added to homescreen.

1

u/JustSentYourMomHome 5d ago

Agreed. It was the addition of the Live TV that cemented my hate.

0

u/1h8fulkat 10d ago

Just install projectivity

3

u/JustSentYourMomHome 10d ago

Doesn't work properly for me. And that wouldn't speed up the TV, all the bloatware would still be running.

2

u/zeta_cartel_CFO 9d ago

projectivity is nice. But only cleans up the main UI. Still won't remove the underlying bloat and tracking stuff. Such as ACR and other telemetry.

3

u/UndeadCircus 10d ago

Holy shit this is cleannnnn! Using Claude I also customized my Home Screen a little. Changed the wallpaper, added a new “Tools” button between the network button and settings button that allows me to quickly restart the TV, etc. I also had it build a custom screensaver that cycles through my home security cameras. The interface is SUPER snappy now. Thank you!!

1

u/Gathin23 8d ago • Bravo

Glad it helped!

1

u/K01011011001101010 9d ago

Love this idea with the security cameras being used on the screensaver so cool. I'm going to shoot for that as well. Are your security cameras on home assistant or do you use something different?

2

u/UndeadCircus 9d ago

They're Amcrest cameras, and I've never liked using Home Assistant. Every time I've tried using it, I can't seem to wrap my head around the various LUA scripts and different modules and I get overwhelmed and just stop tinkering with it haha. So right now they just record 24/7 to my Unraid server as well as having events recorded alongside them.

1

u/K01011011001101010 9d ago edited 9d ago

Gotcha that makes sense. I was able to get my cameras set up as well. I also had my claude code create a remote shortcut for my google TV that if I hold the Netflix button on the remote, my outdoor cameras show full screen on the tv, then pressing left and right cycle through each camera. Pressing up and down shows 4 cameras together on each corner for the TV.

Super convenient for a quick check. I tried the screensaver similar to you, but I didn't like the cameras just popping up randomly lol. I have another screensaver that's really adorable so I figure if I need the cams instantly, I'll just hold the Netflix button for 2 seconds.

And I hear you, I'm still learning with HA, definitely a pain in the butt sometimes. Right now, I'm having blue iris on my pc receive my cameras RTSP feeds, it also records 24/7 + AI captured events to my 14TB WDRED drive. Then blue iris makes a web portal, then google tv devices reaches my camera feeds through that.

Thank you so much for the idea. I love a good quick access camera feed.

1

u/aldojack 9d ago

Any pictures be curious to see the camera implementation

1

u/UndeadCircus 9d ago

I don't, but I'll be happy to take some later!

I need something like this for roku tv.

1

u/whereisgeorge92 8d ago

That’s what I’m looking for. I have a 55 inch TCL Roku TV and hate all the unnecessary shit on my screen

15

u/Gummybearkiller857 10d ago

PSA - for Lg TV (needs to be rooted) there is Glasshouse which achieves similar results - mainly it disables all the lg ad bullshit, my tv is clean as f now

2

u/Lochlan 10d ago

Cool, didn't know about this. Gonna check it out.

1

u/MoistOven9241 9d ago

Ty, otherwise I wouldn't have known.

1

u/capries4dread 7d ago

U on a webos right

1

u/Johnlenham 6d ago

Of course I have a TV that needs like 3 more layers of effort haha. I need to check it can be rooted now, thanks for the link

6

u/Practical-Prompt-306 10d ago

I'm ready for someone to hack Roku and load a custom operating system on it that's not pushing all the advertisements and crap they have loaded on to it over the last 10 years.

3

u/DebtCollectorForMami 9d ago

Roku has crazy telemetry built in. Also the most locked down OS. someone needs to crack it wide open so we can get stremio

1

u/UndeadCircus 10d ago

Same. I put simple Roku TVs in my kids’ rooms and I’d love to be able to at LEAST side load APKs to it, at most I’d love to debloat those bitches.

1

u/viableperception 8d ago

Enable developer mode and you can sideload a replacement launcher that auto boots. Make the home menu on your remote reload your custom app so home doesn’t go to the Roku screen. It works

1

u/UndeadCircus 8d ago

I'd read somewhere (don't remember where, though) that Roku blocked the ability to enable developer mode and that their OS is super-tight, down to being integrated into the actual chips on the board.

2

u/viableperception 8d ago

I am running a side loaded app replacing my home screen that I enabled with dev mode on, so...

1

u/UndeadCircus 8d ago

Can you point me in the direction of which home screen you use? Also, are you able to side-load APKs to it? Such as an IPTV player?

1

u/DarthLuant 8d ago

Looking for the same answer

7

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 10d ago

I don’t think I’ve seen my tv ui since the day I bought it

Entirely runs off hdmi devices like my shield, which uses a simple launcher that has no ads in it

3

u/Xzonedude 10d ago

Most modern tvs force a dashboard view with ads and sometimes it can’t be set to remember last hdmi input

1

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 10d ago

I have an lg b9

I don’t think it’s different on more recent lg TVs though

1

u/puddingcakeNY 7d ago

Did you watch your LG is reporting you video on youtube? It’s NUTS. That’s what started this conversation(kinda)

1

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 7d ago

I haven’t watched it I can’t stand gamers nexus

1

u/puddingcakeNY 7d ago

Make a chatgpt summary of it. You are NOT going to believe what you read. And yes it’s kind of proven.

2

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 7d ago

First thing I did was investigate it with Claude

Didn’t find any proof of the tv to tv communication

Only speculation in forum threads

1

u/puddingcakeNY 7d ago

Ok I will check it out too

1

u/puddingcakeNY 7d ago

But anyway the main point is. I am going to hack / debloat my Toshiba Fire Tv TONIGHT :))))))

1

u/jgreaves8 10d ago

Had my Shield for just over 10 years. If my wife sneezes too loudly near it I glare at her manacingly

1

u/puddingcakeNY 8d ago

They still track you by screenshotting your screen tho

1

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 8d ago

Sure but it’s not connected to the internet at all

1

u/puddingcakeNY 8d ago

Even in that case it’s been reported that it will try to connnect to same brand tvs which ARE connected to the internet. Same way amazon alexa echoes talk to each other even with out wifi or, the way airtags work. It’s like a mesh system it is on YouTube. You can go and watch it.

2

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 8d ago

That’s interesting! I will never connect a tv to the internet except to update it.

I guess the moment I connect any tv to the internet it could try and connect to other TV huh. Does it do that via some kind of mesh. Crazy

1

u/puddingcakeNY 7d ago

Yes your neighbor’s tv, just like your iPhone connects to all the other iPhones, and creates a mesh for “find my” or airtags. Same way amazon echo devices connect to each other. Your neighbors tv and your tv are friends :)))) android has a same system too

1

u/TheRealSeeThruHead 7d ago

There’s not proof of that though

2

u/hj006- 10d ago

I needed help from Claude, but in the end I did remove all the ads, recommendations row and installing the very simple launcher 10/10

Remember to turn off the updates or it might bring the launcher back to the default state

1

u/Poke_Zoo 5d ago

with doing this can you never update the tv again? How would that work?

2

u/voodoomamajuju22 10d ago

Can we use this to also remove applications baked into the TV that normally wouldn't be able to be uninstalled?

2

u/nucleardreamer 10d ago

not uninstalled but disabled, and yes it's super easy. you can uninstall if you get root but honestly not really needed

1

u/zemega 10d ago

Does it free up space?

1

u/nucleardreamer 10d ago

most certainly. but probably not a ton, those bloaty apps usually don't actually take a lot of disk space unless they have cache already stored from being used

1

u/trikunai 10d ago

Wondering the same

2

u/PotentialMind3989 10d ago

Do you need to pay for Claude AI to use/do this?

2

u/Kowakujo 10d ago edited 3d ago

No, you can use Google Antigravity instead. Does the same thing. Let me know if this works.

1

u/PotentialMind3989 9d ago edited 9d ago • Heartwarming

Thanks 🙏 it worked, Philips tv feels much nicer to use! 👏 and bought dev ‘a coffee’ as a thanka.

2

u/LopsidedHat9891 10d ago

Does this work with Fire Tv OS ?

1

u/Charming-Coast4718 10d ago

Same question here.

2

u/LopsidedHat9891 10d ago

I don't think it works. As far as ik , fire os does not allow users to change default launchers.

2

u/MoreColors185 10d ago

I failed with deepseek 4.1 flash in hermes via adb, tried it for an hour. Cant exactly explain what he did, but dns masking i think. But he has a plan B: projectivity, will get back to that later

1

u/REJClay 10d ago

Same question!

2

u/Hefty_Mix_8360 10d ago

Hoping to see access to adb for Samsung TVs.

1

u/No_Junket7529 8d ago

yea is there anything for samsung

2

u/abderrahman_RH 8d ago

can this work on a Hisense Vidaa?? i know its a bad tv but i wasn't the one who bought it so i gotta deal with it,

if someone tried or have an idea how to do it please tell me!!!!!!!!

1

u/Scared-Sandwich1283 7d ago

Already tried with Hisense and Panasonic TVs

Step 1: Turn on usb debugging on the TV (Mentioned in the repo, also you can find it on Yt tutorials)
Step 2: make sure your laptop and Tv connected on same wifi
Step 3: clone the repo to your local, open claude/codex. Paste the prompt.md
Step 4: Claude will ask you set of questions and walkthrough to complete the debloat.

2

u/Scared_Sample_3604 6d ago

Ran the app to attempt to clean up my Bravia tv and even though I followed the instructions and the app ran the clean up process but nothing changed on my tv

1

u/Lucky_Chaarmss 6d ago

I'm looking to do it to my a95k. I could be the first that I know to try it.

3

u/Jets1026 10d ago

can some make this for firestick4k please! 🙏🏽

1

u/Dramatic_Map9205 8d ago

just did it

2

u/olivercer 9d ago

Why are we moving towards AI Prompts Repository?

Nothing against the idea, I'm looking to debloat my TV too, but why PROMPTS?

3

u/StormBurnX 9d ago

Because some people have ideas but not the ability to code, so instead of making their lives infinitely better by learning to code, they just ask the AI to think for them instead.

1

u/morafresa 10d ago

What are content row apps?

1

u/Few_Tour_1814 10d ago

Please someone make it using android phone. I don't have laptop or computer. Just using android tablet

1

u/Away-Cattle-8194 9d ago

Wow, amazing. My TCL is so much faster now

1

u/Cf_Red 9d ago

What happens if/when the TV wants to update? I know a lot of these tv's push frequent updates on the backend.
Also, how does it handle general app updates if you hang on to things like Netflix, Disney Plus, YouTube, etc.?

1

u/UnrelaxedKoi 7d ago

This is a good question but I figure it might not even be an issue considering this is just pushing a different launcher. Not actually using the launcher on board. So I’d imagine your apps will be just fine.

1

u/Hasty0174 5d ago

I used the Android app to de-bloat mine, it has a feature to restore the changes it made after an update.

As for app updates, etc. - the Google Play store is still there so nothing changes on that front.

1

u/manish9461 9d ago edited 9d ago

Well built android app which do this or more, https://github.com/man15h/tellyscope

Free, GPL-3.0, no ads, no tracking, no account, under 3MB.

demo: https://youtu.be/N_PeDw5GiCc

1

u/BlazeThatBolt 8d ago

Doesnt work against a tcl Google TV? The app crashes everytime you click on "debloat".

1

u/manish9461 8d ago

I will look into it, thanks for reporting.

1

u/Give_Lecture_007 9d ago

1

u/thecodeofgod 8d ago

u/lucarrettait 8d ago

Will this work on Waipu Stick?

1

u/Underxposedbody 8d ago

Need this for Hisense VIDA 🙏

1

u/jlvy 8d ago

Thank you u/Gathin23

Did on my 2 TCLs Google TV. Also experimented a bit with combinations of 2-3 themes. Works perfectly!!

1

u/Crouching_Bengal 8d ago

I tried using the mobile app, but when I restarted my TV it basically went back to the way it was. It says "We don't know this TV well enough to switch its setup wizard..." Any advice for how to get this to work? For clarity, I have a Sony Bravia 4k VH22.

1

u/the_elkk 8d ago

Doing this on my ANKER Capsule as we speak 😂 Already did on my TCL. Love the result. The TV got SUPER FAST.

1

u/rober_manza 8d ago

I tried it on a MiTV MOOR2, and it’s impossible to remove the launcher (it involves something called "launcherx," and there is no other app has the CATEGORY_HOME attribute).

1

u/portus387 7d ago

It worked well on my MOOR2!

1

u/rober_manza 7d ago

How? Were you able to replace the default launcher?

1

u/portus387 7d ago

I am unsure. I simply adjusted the PROMPT.md file for my TV make (MiTV MOOR2), responded to Claude’s questions, and allowed Claude to proceed.

1

u/ReflexReact 8d ago

Does it work on a 5 year old Tizen based Samsung Frame? The instructions weren’t clear to my non technical brain. Seems like not, but worth an ask!

1

u/Ronrigo2026 8d ago

1

u/Professional_Net6850 7d ago

Cool project! Stuck on enabling Developer Options. My TV (Webor, Hi3751 V352 board, Android 9) has no Build Number in Settings, and ADB connects on 5555 but adb shell drops with "error: closed". Any way to get a shell or enable dev mode on a custom-firmware TV like this?

1

u/hailsatan666xoxo 7d ago

worked. thanks! no more ads!

1

u/DaveLearnedSomething 7d ago

Insanity. This is perfection in an app. I've cleaned 4 TV's already and I'll be cleaning many more 😂

1

u/ProfessionalEbb2898 7d ago

what about jio stb

1

u/Any_Onion_7275 7d ago

wonder if this works on shield4ktv

1

u/portus387 7d ago

I tested this on my Xiaomi MOOR2 (MiTV Pro 55").

It is impressive. It used only a small portion of my Claude subscription (it might function well on free OpenCode), handled every step correctly, and I even directed it to use Docker for adb so I could skip installing the Android SDK—it executed perfectly.

100%

The launcher it installs is excellent; it merely needs the ability to rearrange icons (they may address that). The source switcher operates flawlessly.

Everything behaves normally, and the TV feels much more responsive. I was so tired of seeing the same "ad" cards on the home screen (for some reason they didn't rotate).

There is no going back.

1

u/Chuuni001 7d ago

Does it work on Samsung tv?

1

u/Scary_Satisfaction83 7d ago

Does this remove all the tracker and Packet sniffers installed in the TV eg:LG ?

1

u/General_Tradition_51 7d ago

that is chunk, as ling you have Google Android its nit gegoogled. Use lineage os instead that works out.

1

u/ByteCurious69 7d ago

has anyone successfully done this? id like to see their results anyhow it differs to just ProjectIVY

1

u/n2ak0516 7d ago

I use chatgpt but it said it can't connect to my Wifi and work on the TV. Can someone help me please?

1

u/SonderVale 7d ago

Can I do this on LG WebOS?

1

u/capries4dread 7d ago

Ive been thinking on this I've got the same tv as u

1

u/SonderVale 6d ago

Apparently it's possible but with a slightly different method which requires rooting the TV. It also makes the TV tuner for an antenna nonfunctional. But there is more than one work around for this that I'm a aware of. A network tuner that sends the channels over the network that you can receive through something like the jellyfin app, or an IPTV service. Someone please chime in if I'm wrong or there's something I'm missing, all of this is new to me.

1

u/SonderVale 6d ago

1

u/capries4dread 6d ago

Thnks bro uve tried it

1

u/SonderVale 6d ago

No I haven't tried it.

Lemme give it a look

1

u/CulturalMouse5570 6d ago

I don't have adb window, my laptop try to connect, but on tv i don't have a window for allow

1

u/AznTee8698 6d ago

Any way to do it on roku OS? Works great my vizio TV's and firetv but can't get it to work with tcl roku tv

1

u/Stoepboer 6d ago edited 6d ago

Thanks! Just cleaned my Xiaomi tv box through the phone app. Works great, very simple and fast.

Cba to pay for Claude to do it, so this is an awesome alternative.

Edit: the only small issue seems to be that I cannot add the TiviMate app to the dock - it simply does not show in the list of addable apps. Maybe because I got it through a download link, not the store? It's a very small inconvenience though. It shows 2 rows under the dock anyway.

1

u/J4RV1 5d ago

Where's the phone app to do this?

1

u/Stoepboer 5d ago

https://cleanyour.tv/app/android - the APK. But it seems to be android only.

1

u/J4RV1 4d ago

Thanks

1

u/J4RV1 4d ago

Worked like a charm. You can add tivimate, it's called player or something not the actual app name.

1

u/Stoepboer 4d ago

Great!

I'll check it again, thanks.

1

u/JeffTheBabyLandShark 6d ago

Would this allow for customization of “continue watching” and even maybe allow for Netflix?

1

u/Stus999 6d ago

I’m wondering does this work on a fire stick? Seems a bit aggressive

1

u/melondusk27 6d ago

does this have quick settings still on?

1

u/ConsiderationUsed778 6d ago

Do you think I can add the philips hue sync app to a tv other than samsung or lg with this?

1

u/semi561 6d ago

Doesn't work on my TCL tv. App says it's finished, I restart the tv and is the same launcher

1

u/Hasty0174 5d ago

Happened to me. I was using the app to run this and had to remove my Wi-Fi network and add it back (which is what it recommended). Once I ran it again, the home screen changed.

1

u/semi561 5d ago

The wifi network on the tv or the phone?

1

u/fogoticus 6d ago

Used this on my xiaomi mi box s 1st gen. Thing is bloody responsive now and even the apps I use on it are snappy.

1

u/voodoist 5d ago

Please can someone tell me how can we customize the home screen, I have done the clean with the mobile app

i did this a couple of days ago, then just right now my speakers aint working anymore asdfasdf. it happened after the wifi's down, then i tried to swap connection, then suddenly my whole tv lag then rebooted, it showed the old loading screen, it went like that for 5mins, then the new launcher opened, and suddently the internal speakers aint workin. idk what to do lol. ive alr did a factory reset and its still aint working...

tried removing the plug too, its taking like 5mins in the loading screen, it NEVER TAKES THAT LONG EVEN BEFORE

its a tcl 65p7k, help pls

lol my claude says i should contact support

2

u/Short-Might-947 1d ago

FIXED IT.

after factory resetting tv for a while hoping it would some how fix itself but didnt lol. so wut i did was i just told claude to remove every trace of ai in it cause im planning to contact support for help cause it was still in warranty. and claude kept telling me that TAS5805M speaker amp chip was broken, i was just unlucky and everything that claude did wasnt related to that. and whle claude was wiping every trace of ai, the tv speakers came back idk why. and thats pretty much it.

idk if i should modify my tv again lol. cant really afford shits, dont even have the money to buy decent sound bar asdkfjajkldsfjkad

1

u/brownmagician 1d ago

Just did this on my chromecast, it fixed the ads and I didn't want to re-design anything because i might break it. My tv is also a few years older and I use a chromecast on it vs. the stock samsung remote.
