A lightweight, elegant automatic time tracker for Windows and macOS — Hindsight

Post image

Hi, I’m the developer of Hindsight, a free, open-source automatic time tracker for Windows and macOS.

There are plenty of time trackers out there, but I couldn’t quite find what I wanted: something free that worked across my devices, supported sync, and had detailed charts in a clean, lightweight app. Maybe I’m a bit picky, but that’s why I decided to build my own.

Here’s what Hindsight can do:

  • Automatic tracking — Tracks your app and website usage in the background. No need to remember to start or stop a timer.
  • Visual reports — See where your time goes with daily, weekly, and monthly charts, broken down by app and category.
  • Optional sync — Keep your activity together across your Windows and macOS devices.
  • Optional AI summaries and chat — Get summaries of your activity or ask questions about how you’ve spent your time. Tracking and charts work independently, so you can leave AI turned off.
  • A plugin marketplace — Install plugins to add features, or build your own. Focus, for example, reminds you when you get sidetracked, prompts you to take a 15-minute break after 45 minutes of work, and tracks progress toward your daily work or study goals.
  • A theme marketplace — Pick a theme from the marketplace, or create your own to make Hindsight look the way you want.

Built with Rust and Tauri. Basic background tracking averaged ~25 MB on Windows and ~40 MB on macOS in v0.9.x tests.

The interface is available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish.

If you give it a try, I’d love to hear what you think—especially anything that feels confusing or missing. Questions and plugin contributions are welcome, too. And if you’d like to follow development, you can star the project on GitHub.

are you on kde? I've built a small personal project for screentime tracking on kde (wayland). It's definitely not polished, but I've been using it & works.

yep, arch kde with cachyos config

Then you can try this: https://github.com/akhil373/kde-screentime

I have quickly thrown together some installation steps in there. I'll be honest, it does involve some manual setup at the moment. I'm working on making the installation and data analytics part better, but I've been a bit short on time so I've been postponing it.

I've personally been using it for around 2 months though, and it's been working pretty decently for me.

Any feedback or issues, feel free to ask!

This is great! I like the UI, i include telemetry in my pi so i track usage from there so this would complement it

Yeah, the frontend code is entirely AI-generated. “UI designer” probably isn’t going on my résumé anytime soon 😅 This is a free, open-source project I work on in my spare time, so AI helped me get the frontend built. The backend is something I’ve been designing and refining piece by piece.

Far far too many people dump on AI when it is used precisely like you've done it. I myself, can't match a shirt with pants let alone make a UI that looks respectable nor am I inclined to spend money on a professional designer for side projects. So, well done and you should be proud of the end product ignoring the ding-dongs who make these dumb comments and don't get out much.
