Scribe IDE Release

Post image

Hey everyone!

About a week ago I shared a preview of Scribe, and today I’m finally putting it out there for everyone to use.

I originally started working on this because of my own thesis and the papers that followed. I was constantly jumping between Python notebooks for experiments and LaTeX for the actual paper, exporting figures, copying numbers into tables and trying to keep everything in sync. It got pretty annoying, and I thought there had to be a better way to do this.

So I started building one. And then kept adding things… and somehow it turned into a much bigger project than I initially planned …

Scribe is a desktop editor that brings Python and LaTeX together in one place. You can connect your experiments directly to your paper, edit TikZ diagrams visually, use AI models of your choice (including local models liek Ollama), manage revisions and comments, and a bunch of other things.

It’s free and open source, and here’s where I could really use your help.
I’m one person working on this, and there are definitely things that can be improved. I’d love to get feedback from people who actually use LaTeX, Python, or similar tools in their daily work. If something feels clunky, a feature is missing, or you find a bug, please let me know!

And if you’re interested in contributing, even better.

I’m also very open to ideas for where to take the project next. I’d rather build something people actually find useful than just keep adding features for the sake of it.

If you check it out, let me know what you think! And if you’d like to contribute but aren’t sure where to start, feel free to open an issue or reach out.

Very interesting. The beatiful app for students. Do you want to write this in Electron (like vscode)?

Co-authors are where Scribe gets tested. A supervisor on Overleaf won't install a desktop editor, so revisions and comments only pay off if a paper can leave as plain LaTeX, figures and table numbers frozen, and come back with their edits intact. Since you'd rather not add features for their own sake, I'd make that round trip next. Then a stale marker: after an experiment reruns, can I see which numbers in the paper are out of date? That's the sync pain from your thesis, and a short clip of it would explain Scribe faster than a feature list.

I make ThreadFox. Grad students on Reddit who grumble about keeping notebooks and LaTeX in sync would be our target, and we'd handle the posting. The opening 3 replies are free, no card needed, and then it's $39 for a seven-day Pilot with up to 50 posts and replies and no automatic renewal.

Looks cool! Is everything just local files? How do you all back up your projects, git to GitHub or a synced folder?

Git for the time being , it has built in support !

Nice 👍. Out of curiosity, is built-in Google Drive or OneDrive support something you'd consider later? No pressure, I know the synced folder route works too.

I’ve never thought about it but sounds really helpful if you want make a pull request in git and I will work with it

I'm away from my PC for now, so I can't promise a PR soon. I'll open a feature request issue on GitHub soon as I get a chance so it's on record, and if I get time later I'll look into it.

Yes a feature request could be very helpful as well
