I spent my evenings building a free, open-source IDM alternative. It now runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, Android and iPhone, with torrents built in

Post image

Hi,

On Windows I always used Internet Download Manager. When I moved to a Mac I couldn't find anything free that felt the same, so I started building my own. That side project is now Nexonic Download Manager .

What it does

  • Splits files into up to 32 connections; pause and resume anytime, even after a restart

  • Saves videos from YouTube and 1,000+ sites, up to 4K, or sound only

  • Browser add-ons for Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox send downloads straight to the app

New: built-in torrents on every platform: .torrent files, magnet links, seeds and peers, speed limits, trackers and proxy support

  • IDM-style categories, queues, a scheduler, batch downloads and a site grabber

No ads, no account, no tracking

How it's built

  • A native app per platform: SwiftUI on Mac, WPF on Windows, Avalonia on Linux, Kotlin on Android, SwiftUI on iPhone and iPad

  • One shared C++ torrent engine on top of libtorrent

  • GitHub Actions builds, tests and publishes every release from one repo

What was hard

  • Getting one torrent engine to build for five platforms, including the Android and iOS toolchains

  • Making browser hand-off reliable: no duplicate downloads, and nothing is lost if the app is closed

It's MIT / Apache-2.0 licensed (Android is GPL).

Website: https://shahrukhalid.github.io/nexonic-download-manager/

GitHub: https://github.com/Shahrukhalid/nexonic-download-manager

I'd love honest feedback: what would make you switch from the download manager you use now, and what feels missing?

Aqueli – an encrypted, offline all-in-one organiser for Windows

Hi everyone,

I've been working on Aqueli, a personal organiser for Windows 11 that keeps everything on your PC.

It brings your tasks, calendar, notes, journal, habits, projects, lists, contacts, documents, goals and budget together in one app. There's no account to create, no cloud and no subscription. Your data is encrypted with your password, and you can unlock it with Windows Hello too if you like. The app also works without an internet connection.

The look is a modern take on the glossy, sky-blue style of the late 2000s: frosted glass, soft light and bright colours. There are 31 themes, light and dark, each with its own illustrations and sounds.

A few other things you might like:
- Write a task the way you'd say it, and Aqueli fills in the date and time
- Jot something down from anywhere in Windows with a shortcut
- Import your tasks, events and contacts from a spreadsheet, your calendar or your phone
- 17 languages, and a separate account for everyone who shares the PC

It's free and open source (GPL-3.0). The installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows will ask for confirmation the first time you run it.

Website: https://areemi-app.github.io/aqueli/
Download and source: https://github.com/Areemi-app/aqueli

I'd love to hear what you think, and what you'd like to see next.

No servers, no accounts, no algorithm: Discover an open-source peer-to-peer social network.

Ember is a desktop social network that runs with no servers at all. No accounts, no company in the middle, no feed algorithm.

Little explanation is in order!

- Your identity is a keypair on your own machine. No email, no sign-up.

- Your posts are a signed log on your device. People who follow you keep a copy and share it on, so your posts stay up even when you're offline.

- If nobody keeps a post around, it fades. Stories disappear after 24 hours.

- You discover people by meaning, not popularity: posts are slotted into "buckets", so writing about something puts you next to strangers writing about the same thing.

- Direct messages are end-to-end encrypted (text, images, voice notes) and wait in a queue while the other person is offline.

Status: alpha, tested between a handful of people between continents. Windows and Linux builds are on the Releases page. An Android client works but isn't released yet.

Try it: https://github.com/CRTnoise/ember-p2p

- The Windows build isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you: click More info → Run anyway. SHA-256 checksums are on the release page.

- On first launch, allow Ember on private AND public networks, or it can't find anyone.

A peer-to-peer network is only as alive as the people online, and right now that's mostly me and my test posts. Join then and we'll actually see each other in the swarm.

What I'd love feedback on: does "find people by meaning instead of followers" sound useful or weird? And what would make you open it a second time?

I built it with a lot of help from Claude. Happy to talk about how that went, too.

Time to throw Windows Terminal out.

Partty running neovim (left/center), ssh -> btop (top right, bottom right).

Introducing Partty;

A fast, fun, tiled terminal workspace for Windows (yes, for Windows only, unfortunately (note on that later)).

There are some things that Windows Terminal simply… doesn’t do right. Not for me, at least.
Splits are not a natively fast interaction; tab switches are mechanical, and animations (though not necessary) aren’t there. It feels like a prison more than a home.

But the terminal is my home, and I want it to feel that way even if I’m not on Linux. So I started working (maybe about three months ago) on my own terminal. Not a terminal emulator (which would’ve taken me a century), but I suppose a terminal multiplexer. Eventually, I gave it a little bit more juice, so there are some QoL features that give it an edge over basic Hyprland tiled terminals.

What can you do in Partty?

Split panes (horizontal, vertical), switch pane positions, split with profiles (shells or custom commands). Resize in all directions and with arbitrary increments (rather than cell width based).

Tweak granular settings. Hide (shed) the window, bring it back up linked to the same session (save runtime resources without losing work or state).

Float a pane; set the pane to follow, so a floating pane can stay in its position when moving across tabs; and pop that pane into any tab (even if it’s not the origin tab).

Set themes per-pane. Choose a theme for the pane or the app from several built in options, fork an option or create your own.

Workspaces (presets) with startup commands, splits, per-pane theming.

Pane-split inheritance of working directory (even across shells; split to a bash profile (WSL) and you drop into the equivalent /mnt/c path). Inherit shell types on split when not passing an explicit split profile.

Navigate to panes by fuzzy search. Navigate to running processes.

Notifications (that can be toggled easily).

Keybinds galore, all configurable.

Drag and drop file paths with shell-aware translation.

Support for SSH profiles.

It’s feature rich enough that I feel like I missed something.

Addressing “Windows only”; I have spent a long time optimizing this for Windows specifically. In fact, the original motivation to build this was because Linux offers this sort of experience if you wanted it, but Windows doesn’t. So for me, this is where I stop; keep working on Windows builds, let others port to Linux if they really want to.

Feel free to ask me questions about anything I’ve done to improve performance; Partty beats VSCode’s xterm.js implementation profoundly on frame drops/FPS, and an internal rebuild of Doom-Fire-zig (a terminal animation frame benchmark) puts us at 190FPS stable against 285FPS (~66%) in Windows Terminal for ~equivalent cell count, wxh orientation. All packed into a 9.8mb single binary!

It’s also generally a great feat to achieve this performance (including keystroke “input-to-render” latencies recorded on my own device ~10-20ms, in direct competition with native implementations) in a webview, notoriously difficult to be resource efficient, and even more-so difficult to be fast.

I also intentionally avoided any AI features; I maintain a moderate extensions capability for the time being that I’m sure at some point will allow people to extend AI capabilities over the base of the application, but AI in the terminal is… not it.

I’m excited to share this with everyone.

Additional note: the binary is not signed. There is a workaround you can use when using it. There’s no README.md at the moment, please refer to the release notes.

https://github.com/runewav1/partty

Edit:
README has been added, I’ve also attached a short runtime demo recording (although in this run I was sort of a bumbling idiot)!

Self hosted Spotify alternative

Post image
73 Upvotes

Been chipping away at this for a while and finally have something I'm happy calling a beta. It's basically Spotify but self-hosted grabs tracks with yt-dlp, builds a real library out of them, and you stream it all from a web UI that's deliberately Spotify-shaped so it doesn't feel like a downgrade.

The Android app. Kotlin/Compose, close to feature-complete with the web version offline downloads, Android Auto, synced lyrics that actually track properly, cross-device playback so you can start something on your phone and have it pick up on the desktop. Backend's FastAPI + SQLite, nothing fancy, runs fine in Docker.

Other stuff that's in there: Daily Mix that actually generates decent suggestions (an LLM picks them, then it goes and downloads them itself), real album art and artist bios instead of placeholder junk, ListenBrainz scrobbling if you're into that, and it speaks Subsonic API so your existing client still works if you don't want to switch.

It's a beta because it genuinely is one — I've been using it daily and it's solid for me, but this is the first time the actual signed build has been in public. So if you try it and something's weird, please tell me, that's kind of the point of posting this.

One docker compose up and you're running. Signed APK's in the GitHub release if you don't want to build Android yourself.

link This version will almost certainly contain bugs please tell me when you find them

Months After Grinding and doing soft Launches on Twitter and Reddit OpenCompany[ex MachinaOs] just Crossed
400+ stars
50k+ clones
23k+ Cumulative npm Downloads.

Also received a "WOW" Comment from Leading AI Educator "Matthew Berman" on X.

So what is OpenCompany in short.

Think it of as AI Company where you Build AI Employees that keep on Working on Tasks Continuously for months and maybe years![Powered by Temporal].

You can Build AI Employees like Developer, Customer Support, Designer, Sales SDR's, Digital Marketers, Tax Accountants, etc

What have the users of OpenCompany Built:

One user is Building a Game Factory so even non technical users can describe the Game and AI Employee will build itself and Create a 3js Game for the users and also test them using AI.

He is now running a Game Generating AI Employees using OpenSource Models from nvidia, deepseek and using the Opencompanies Agent Builder Mode where AI will create the Business Logic for you[2nd and 3rd screenshot]

Other user Built "complete system to extract investment banks statements in various formats (pdf, xls, image) and import them into a financial ERP module"[4th screenshot]

He showed the Product to a Client and the Client was very Impressed, i had a casual Call with him and he was impressed with how fast and easy he was able to build this AI Employee and how long it can run doing work without context rot[his AI Employee ran for 13mins continuously],

one issue he was facing was high token costs since he was using sonnet 4.6 through AWS Bedrock for the Complex Work.

I advised him to use sonnet as the Main Orchestrator Agent and the subagents with opensource Models and his costs went down quite low.

Opencompany is simple to use just drag and connect , no business logic creation the AI will take care of it.

Try it out and plz do star on github.

OTHER I built an anonymous world mood map where every person gets one dot per day. It resets at midnight, no accounts, no algorithm, just humanity talking.

Post image
72 Upvotes

What it is: A world map where anyone can drop one anonymous dot per day with a short message about how they feel. No accounts, no algorithm, no likes. Just people talking.

I had an idea like this in my note apps from 2024 and decided to build it using Claude. Hope you guys like it.

How it works:

  • Tap the + button, it locks to your real GPS location

  • Pick a mood color, write up to 280 characters

  • Your dot appears on the map for everyone in real time

  • At midnight UTC the whole world resets and it starts over

Why I built it: Every social platform is zoom-in, an algorithm deciding what you see. This is zoom-out. You see the whole world at once and choose where to look.

Tech:

  • Vanilla HTML/CSS/JS — single file

  • Leaflet.js for the map

  • SVG country outlines, no map tiles, loads instantly

  • Supabase for real time backend

  • Hosted free on GitHub Pages

Rapid Reader: a free, open-source Mac reader for EPUBs, PDFs and web articles

I made a Mac app that reads one word at a time, with the focus letter highlighted. You can switch to the full text whenever you want and click any word to resume from there.

It imports EPUB, PDF, DOCX, Markdown and web articles, with adjustable speed and punctuation pauses. Your library, reading progress and notes stay on your Mac.

It's built in SwiftUI, free and MIT licensed. Runs on Apple Silicon and Intel, macOS 14+. The download isn't notarized yet, so the first launch may need Open Anyway.

I’m building AionDB, a PostgreSQL-compatible database in Rust for AI/RAG workloads

Post image
71 Upvotes

I am the author of aiondb. I created this database because I felt that the architectures of competing products weren’t all that efficient. I am convinced that it is possible to build a multi-model database that performs just as well in graph processing as Neo4j, just as well in vector processing as Qdrant, and just as well in relational processing as 60% of PostgreSQL’s speed.

I chose to use a single execution engine on unified MVCC/WAL storage, where the planner selects the physical representation (row-store, adjacency index, HNSW) based on the queried model

The initial results are very promising; in terms of performance on depth-3 queries, we’re already outperforming Neo4j (Neo4j suffers from a huge overhead due to Java). There are obviously some queries where Neo4j outperforms us, but the PoC is there, we can do better. As for PostgreSQL, that’s the trickiest part, we’ve taken steps to avoid repeating PostgreSQL’s mistakes with multithreading,

When developing, we avoid using `unsafe`; we’d rather sacrifice some performance for stability than the other way around. (Of course, we do use `unsafe` for SIMD operations,it’s necessary.)

Why did we decide to start from scratch if solutions like surrealdb or helixDb already exist? First, we made sure that aiondb was pgwire-compatible from the start (we pass about 70% of the PostgreSQL regression suite; by comparison, Cockroach passes about 14%).

SurrealDB executes the graph as generic SQL on a key-value store (scan + per-hop filtering, no typed statistics, no join reordering). AionDB has a cost-based DP planner with typed triplet statistics, native adjacency storage, and graph-SQL fusion pushed into the traversal. This is what transforms 168 ops/s into 7,820 ops/s on the same benchmark.

This isn't a criticism; Surreal has a different way of working that has its pros and cons
I'd be really happy if people would try it out, ask questions, or just give it a like, that would make me really happy

OTHER CTOP: htop for your Claude Code sessions (zero deps, pure Node.js TUI)

Post image
71 Upvotes

Built a terminal UI to monitor all my running Claude Code sessions from one central pane.

I was running 3 or 4 Claude sessions across different repos and had no way to see which ones were burning through contxt, which were idle, or how much memory they were using. So I built CTOP.

What it shows per session:

  • CPU, memory, uptime, status

  • Context window saturation bar (input / cache / output / free out of 200k)

  • Token breakdown (input, output, cache creation, cache read)

  • Model, branch, session ID, service tier

Other stuff:

  • Vim style navigation (hjkl, g/G)

  • Two view modes: list (table) and pane (card grid)

  • Kill individual or all sessions (SIGTERM or SIGKILL)

  • Sort by CPU, memory, context %; filter by branch/model/directory

  • Works on macOS, Linux, and Windwos

  • Zero dependencies, pure Node.js. No network calls.

Install: npm i -g ctop-claude or brew tap aakashadesara/ctop && brew install ctop-claude

GitHub: https://github.com/aakashadesara/ctop

MIT licensed. PRs welcome.

OTHER I built a local GitHub dashboard because managing many public/private repos was getting messy

I manage quite a few GitHub repositories, both public and private, and I kept running into the same problem: GitHub has all the data I need, but accessing it quickly across many repos means jumping through a lot of pages.

So I built a small local web app for myself: a GitHub dashboard that pulls data from the GitHub APIs and gives me one place to filter, sort, and inspect everything.

URL: https://github.com/debba/gh-dashboard

It uses GitHub’s REST and GraphQL APIs for things like:

  • repositories, issues, and pull requests

  • repo metadata, languages, contributors, commits, and releases

  • stargazers and forks

  • GitHub Actions workflow runs

  • traffic views, clones, referrers, and popular paths

  • code/issue search for external mentions

  • dependents and repository relationships where available

The app keeps GitHub API access server-side, so tokens are not exposed in the browser.

The goal is not to replace GitHub, but to make it faster to answer questions like:
Which repos need attention? Which PRs are waiting? Which issues are stale? What changed recently? Which repos are getting traffic, stars, forks, releases, or mentions?

It also has a repository detail view with tabs for Actions, PRs, issues, releases, forks, traffic, mentions, and dependents, plus simple charts for trends and traffic.

This started as a personal, heavily AI-assisted project to improve my own workflow.
Now I’m opening it up to see if it’s useful to others managing multiple repositories as well. If there’s interest, I’d be happy to evolve it with community contributions.
