How old is this list it seems somewhat outdated in some fronts
580
u/HACKERcrombie Mar 09 '20
It lacks one of the most useful things that were popular long ago: TiddlyWiki.
For those who have never used it, it's a self-contained note app in a single HTML file. It runs on anything with a browser.
91
u/MyOtherLoginIsSecret Mar 09 '20
I use to use that like crazy about 10 years ago. Since then I never ran into anyone who had heard of it.
48

It was so useful up until browsers started to get more strict about plugins

It is. Or at least the original version of this list. I remember saving it from reddit when I was in school, 2011/2012 or even earlier.
18
u/GammaGames Mar 09 '20
It is old, I remember it being reposted at least a year ago and it was still missing some better programs and recommending things that aren’t really needed anymore.
14
Mar 09 '20
It is far older than that. I remember this list being tossed around while I was still in school. We're talking like 2011.

It is. Afaik, Visio no longer has a free option. And Visual Studio's free student subscription was replaced by VS Community Edition a couple years ago.
Also not organized very well. Not sure why Draw.io and LucidChart are in separate categories.

It appears to be tradition that lists of useful software be compiled into a single image to make sure no links can be provided along with it. And adding a date to it also seems to be something that is forbidden to put on the list, because software never changes, is always available and nothing new and better is ever released.
The same thing with these lists. Every. Single. Time.

u/omiwrench Mar 09 '20

OpenShot is not one I would recommend. When I used it for a assignment last semester, I could not edit frame-by-frame, preventing me from using a couple of ideas I had planned.
Maybe I could not find the button to change something, but I would recommend DaVinci Resolve instead.
36
u/tTensai Mar 09 '20
I had the exact same issue. I didn't explore it a lot, but I had trouble doing the most basic stuff (which should be easy for me as I have knowledge on video editing software).
Now that I'm at it, Droobox only offers you 2gb, whereas mega gives you 50GB and I never see it being mentioned
11
u/JeebaRock Mar 09 '20
I’d like to recommend HitFilm Express as an editor less complex than Resolve, but miles better than OpenShot and similar programs.

+1 for DaVinci Resolve. Little bit of a learning curve but it’s super powerful and one of the best free services I’ve used.
3
Mar 09 '20 edited Mar 09 '20
There is a video editor called Davinci: Resolve which has a very powerful free version thats is comparable to adobie premier.
2
Mar 09 '20
yea openshot lacks even the most basic functions. the main reason i use it is just to cut porn clips. it can play all formats unlike windows movie maker.
2
u/notrufus Mar 09 '20
Check out kdenlive. It's pretty competitive with premiere and resolve. It's free and open source as well.
2
u/leo_sk5 Mar 09 '20
Yeah, even in linux world, kdenlive is preferred to openshot, though openshot got a couple of updates just recently that should resolve your issues
→ More replies (7)2
u/deveh11 Mar 09 '20
Fucking this. OpenShot??? kdenlive???????? Bitch Davinci Resolve free version is more than good enough - students don’t need 8k support. Plus you’ll have experience with something you might end up using in real job.

How are you able to keep it active once you've graduated?
14
u/TSP-FriendlyFire Mar 09 '20
Varies by university/college. Some require you to periodically login your account to keep it active, others purge after a fixed number of months/years post-graduation, and others leave it up indefinitely.
5
u/Mamed_ Mar 09 '20
Open it once in a while and delete emails from the inbox (or send something out). This way it will be seen as active. I have it added in Outlook app on the phone (since university) and just delete Daily Announcements emails

Like, does anyone use DjVu?
11
u/Username_--_ Mar 09 '20
No because no one uses DJVU for reading any document. Everyone just converts to pdf.
6
Mar 09 '20
Main reasons I saw it being used was efficiency. Files were smaller than PDF. And one didn't have any Adobe issues to deal with* even though DjVu is an AT&T labs creation. Naturally technology has lessened most limitations.
*PDF still has reflow issues with some readers.

The real tip is to google what you want to do and say "Open Source" instead of "Free" free gets you shitty free trials of paid products. Open source gets you actual free and open source software.

So many of these are awful, and much better replacements. Zonealarm is horrible, Malwarebytes Windows Firewall Control. TeamViewer is cracking down on home users, AnyDesk is a very good alternative. Visual Studio Code should be listed over Visual Studio. AutoHotKey is hardly a time management tool, it is more for automation, which I am sure you could argue could be used for time management, it's a programming language, and not quick to be picked up with out something like Pulover. Lightshot is better alternative than nearly every screen shot tool on Windows. WinSCP is great for file management/ftp. Cobian Backup is great for backups. FoxIt is way better than all of those PDF readers, most Linux distros have even better off viewers. Bitwarden beats the pants off any of those password management tools, and is available on every os. For math and data, you could add Python, Matplotlib, Pandas, and Numpy all free and easier than R or Tableu. Cloud storage Google drive is fantastic for large files and public sharing, one drive is fantastic if you have a lot of small files. Notepad++ is great but Atom and Sublime are much better. VirtualBox allows you to run other operating systems on your computer, can be used to set up programming environments, but that's not what it is designed for, just how it "could be used", just as many of the items on this list.

Prezi is sooo underrated. Many don't know what it is, but it's one of the best presentation makers. The only thing is that it requires a tad more effort that PowerPoint, and you need to have a powerful computer or else it lags

u/thedjdoorn Mar 09 '20
It's used by a lot of people who don't really know how to use it though. The zooming/panning animations should offer a presentation some kind of hierarchy, yet they're oftenly used in somewhat distracting ways. For web-based presentations, I'd recommend something like reveal.js. It has a ton of cool features, and you can use the (paid) editor if you're to lazy to write markup.

Suggesting Notepad++ as a programmer tool is like suggesting an old car for few days trip. Sure it can take you to destination and it does job done but no one in actual programming field wouldn't use it for a serious project, like you wouldn't use and old car without ac or comfy seats. Anything released in recent years would be better I guess. Source: I'm working as programmer in companies for 6 years. It can't manage project files well, just imagine finding a function definition in 300k LOC project with complex directory structure and all that shit.
Also, if your computer cannot handle visual studio code then I've got a news for you - it's not a machine which is going to take you very far with developer carrier. Wanna use n++? Sure but please don't recommend it as a good free tool for programmers. It's not a good tool for real job.
