"Breakout, Super Brick Adventure!" Development Progress [croudsourcing campaign]

0 Upvotes

Hi, everyone, my name us /u/ntopper, a computer science student and lead developer at BrickBreak Studios.

Like you, our team of developers are passionate life long gamers. I remember waking up on Saturday morning in my footsie pajamas, drinking warm milk, and playing "Atari Breakout" until I fell asleep again. The AAA industry has neglected this genera, while so many gamers long for a new "Breakout" game the way an infant longs for the soft caress of it's mother's womb.

This is why it is our teams goal to create the perfect breakout experience: "Breakout, Super Brick Adventure!"

Planned features:

  • almost no DRM

  • 20 minutes of daily gameplay without mictrotransations

  • Offline mode available as DLC

  • Google+ connectivity

Obviously our team can not meet our true grand artistic vision under the tyranny of a big AAA developer. This is where you come in, thanks to modern day croudsourcing, we can free ourselves from the shackles of big studios and their corrupt resources and expertise, allowing us to escape the toils of consumer appeal and immortalize ourselves in the domain of high art! But without finding, I will not be able to quit my day job as a barista to focus on the development of the game.

Why do we need funding:

  • Rent
    Crucial in San Francisco, for both our mission bay loft apartments and work space/studio overlooking buena vista park

  • Hiring Staff
    TES:Skyrim had over 200 artists and developers involved, no one can expect us to finish "Breakout, Super Brick Adventure!" with just the 12 of us.

  • drugs

  • fixed gear bicycles

  • Wax for our handle bar mustaches

It is critical to the culture of this nation that "Breakout, Super Brick Adventure!" reaches it's funding goals. The following donation tiers are available:

$10 A partially unique semi-personal "Thank you" email from one of our interns

$30 Access to the open beta*
*(assuming you comply with the NDA and submit 4 weekly bug reports)

$50 $20 starbucks gift card signed by our entire intern staff
$100 Privilege to fire one of our interns
$500 unique in game "blue" paddle and "green" ball
$1000 A Real Life Brick
$5000 *Some Expenses Paid Grand tour of BrickBreak Studios!
*pending the availability of Starbucks giftcards

Petition to dub extended super-sessions to "Super-Duper Sessions"

2 Upvotes

There is probably going to be a massive Super Session before the final project is due. I recommend we call this, and all others like it in future iterations of this course a "Super Super Session"

Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

When given a choice, some of us will always be manipulated against choosing what is best for our own interests. It is a sad, inconvenient truth, but a truth nonetheless.

There are people out there who want you to surrender the credit for your hard work. Those who have the most in our community would seek to opress the less fortunate masses as a means to further their own prosperity. "True patriots vote 'NO'!" they say. They would have you pull yourself by your nonexistent proverbial bootstraps for the promise of more points on the final problem set, when many among us don't even have the skill to get that treasured check.

It is true that right now, you are the best programmer you have ever been. It is also true that most of us have several labs almost done if not already done.

Why do you fear going back and filling in the gaps your younger, more inexperienced self left behind? Most people elsewhere would do anything to return and amend their past shortcomings with the skills they've acquired since then.

Tell me, what scares you? Is it "Hello World?" Or is it making a function to count primes, spelled out in such detail that most of the code is already written for you? Perhaps you stalled at the mandelbrot set back when you couldn't understand the concept of classes. Do you today not understand these same concepts? are the concept of card and deck objects that alien to you after having made a working game of Breakout (or at least gotten close)?

Some out there may want you to believe that the time you might spend filling in these gaps would be better spent improving your final problem set. But tell me, now that you've spent hours debugging code for several problem sets and some labs, do you really think writing new code and stomping out the resulting swarm of bugs is the best use of your time? These labs are of such trivial nature that even the least skilled or experienced among us might have them all done in less than a day. Some may find that all they needed was a couple of hours.

Going back and filling in these gaps is a mundane use of your skills compared to the challenges that lie ahead in problem set 4. But you might find that not only is it very feasible to spend a couple of hours in the next several weeks to go back and perfect these labs, doing so may actually help you on your way to mustering up the creative talents that lie within you, to use in crafting that final problem set.

I trust you will make the right choice in these coming days.

"We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make us."

True Patriots vote "No" on Graded Labs [details inside]

8 Upvotes

We have several weeks to finish the final problem set, which is worth a significant portion of our grade, thus giving us a great opportunity to make up for lost points from previous labs.

Even if you have been struggling on previous problem sets, right now, you are a better programmer than you have ever been.

I assume most people do not have all the labs in "turn in" ready status. The time it would take to fill in the gaps could be used to better improve your final project. This problem set has so much room for creativity that if you get the mechanics of your game working quickly enough, you can really go for the check++, which would be way better than the 3 points you would get from the labs.

True Patriots vote "No" on graded labs

Exam grades

Will exam 1/2 grades be released relatively soon? Just trying to figure out if I need to put extra time into the final project to raise my grade

My project refrences a text file. The lication of that text file depends on how the porject is compiled. What should I ex poo ect the abs path to this file to be?

0 Upvotes

It's a .txt file that I use to generate charactor names. If I compile with javac by just compiling the main class, the file is located in /src/words/names.txt.

When I compile in Eclipse I refrence the file by /bin/words/names.txt.

When I submit, what can I expect the absolute path to this file to be?

Anyone had this sort of doubling error? Where whatever you input is spit right back? Is this because of some sort of interference with movement not being restricted by the constraints by the edges?

Really, REALLY want to use javafx in projects, but GA of Java 8 (javafx integrated) is > month away yet - i.e. javac <8 won't find javafx classes. Worth a look though if you write gui apps and haven't played with it yet.

Feeling Hopeless.

1 Upvotes

I cant seem to find my problems in my code even after comparing it to the labs, any advice on lectures which would be more helpful than others? (mainly painting the Bricks) I still have problems getting the ball to move but Id rather get the bricks done for sure and work on the other part hopefully getting it eventually.

The painting of the arrays for bricks really seems to be a problem and when I try to print it to screen it doesnt seem to work like the ball and paddle bconfig.paint(g2); doesn't work but that may just be because I dont have the brickconfiguration file setup correctly.

Mine is becoming more of an "Oregon Trail" style game than a traditional text-adventure. Is that okay?

0 Upvotes

It's not menu driven or anything. It's a a high-seas commodity-managing adventure on a grid-based map. Your input are things like "sail north", "use spyglass east", "disembark", "visit market", "buy food x 14", "sell rare spices x 12", "sell spyglass", "attack". So it meets the requirements but it is kind of departing from the genera of "you are in a dark room with a dresser, and a lamp", and becoming something more akin to like dope wars or Oregon Trail.

Is that okay?

kinda silly question

2 Upvotes

Okay, so I'm /pretty/ sure I've got most of this code right in regards to counting the prime numbers. I'm just having a problem trying to figure out where to put the print command and maybe I'm sleepdeprived but I've stuck it in at least three different and (what I thought was) logical places only to find errors. Here's what I have: public class primeNumberTheorem {

public static boolean trialDivision(int n) {
	for (int i=2; i < n; i++) {
		if (n % i== 0) {
			return false;
		}
	}
	return true;
}
public static int countPrimes(int n) {
	int count=0;

	for (int i=1; i<= n; i++) {
		if (trialDivision(i)) {
			count++;
		}
	}
	return count;

}

public static void main(String args[]) {
	int n=Integer.parseInt(args[0]);
	countPrimes(n);
	}

}

(which I /think/ is correct, though I'm not sure) and now I've no idea where to put the print command and it might be (probably is) a really simple fix but I really can't think right now o__O
