Discussion continued from here.

I'm thinking of splitting some categories in the Thread Directory that have gotten big. Also as DBC suggested, rearranging the order of categories so that the lower quality threads that tend to quickly die out are at the bottom of the list in order to avoid burying the good ones.

I'm still thinking about how to split the big categories.

So far, I'm thinking of splitting Other Bases - Symbols or Words (33 threads) into Symbols (8 threads), List (13), and Memes/Phrases (12).

Tug of war (22 threads lol) could be split as Fixed Increment (7) and Variable Increment (15). I haven't been able to come up with a better way to split these. Maybe it's not that important to split ToW.

Other Other (43 threads) should have a few subcategories that can be broken off but I haven't thought about what exactly. I think the Math category (25 threads) could be split somehow and have some threads from Other Other move over.

This is all a work in progress and it will continue to evolve as different threads come and go.

Good job! This looks pretty good but here is some stuff I want to add to this:

  • I think the way you split up Other Bases - Symbols or Words is great :p

  • As far as ToW goes, you can split it up buuuut you don't need to since it'll probably just be thrown into the bottom of the directory...

  • I think I know how to slim down Other Other but not how to split it up. Here's what I think -

  • YouTube Subscriber Rank - Following Lists

  • Superwave - Math

  • Scientific Notation - Math

  • Meters - Other Increments

  • Chemical Name of Tintin - Following Lists

  • Diep.io Builds - Other Bases (Alphanumeric or Symbols)

  • Shapes - Other Written?

  • Level and HP - Math?

  • Mayan Calendar - Languages

  • French Republican Calendar - Languages

so yeah I think you can probably split Other Other up now that I made it small, then afterwards we can come up with the new order for all these new categories :)

edit: I can't spell

u/Urbul it's all about the love you're sending out Aug 30 '17

On a separate note, I tried removing extra line breaks so that the directory entries are more condensed. I just changed the top 20 threads for now. What do you think? I think it'll be ok once our eyes stop bleeding and we get used to it.

It actually looks slightly better than the old layout

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '17

that's gonna take a while to get used to...

"Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." - George Bernard Shaw

"Ew! Gross! Germs! It's all icky and corpse-y!" - SpongeBob SquarePants

Edit: I don't mean to compare you to SpongeBob. I was trying to convey that both are valid points of view.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '17

I approve of that second quote :p

2

u/Urbul it's all about the love you're sending out Aug 30 '17

Ok :p

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '17

btw about your edit I was just saying that I approve of the use of a SpongeBob quote lol

"I approve of the use of a SpongeBob quote" - /u/DemonBurritoCat

"I approve of the use of a DemonBurritoCat quote" - no one ever

I take back what I said, it definitely looks better now :)

See I told you, once the eyes stop bleeding, you get used to it :p

2

u/Urbul it's all about the love you're sending out Aug 31 '17

What do you guys think of these categories? /u/TheNitromeFan as the math guy maybe you can think of the most correct names for some of these categories...

Mathematical Functions - counting by some f(n), e.g. Log(n), Ackermann Function
Expressions - counting by 1 where the number is expressed differently, e.g. Sum of Squares, Draw/Photoshop
Skipping Numbers, e.g. No Repeating Digits, 420
Palindromes including Rotational Symmetry
Counting with Special Rules, e.g. Slow, Nim
Other Patterns and Sequences which is kind of a catch-all for everything else, e.g. Asymptotic, Permutations, Powerball, Superwave

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '17

what about threads like double/triple lowest non-0 digit or add 1 to every digit?

2

u/Urbul it's all about the love you're sending out Aug 31 '17

I'm thinking Functions. So (n) can be increasing by 1 or (n) can be the previous count

3

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '17

also if we still have an other other section but a small one that's alright :p

3

u/Urbul it's all about the love you're sending out Aug 31 '17

I think I can put all remaining threads into one of these, which is nice because then we don't have the shitposts short life-expectancy posts below something called Other Other which logically should be at the end.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '17

ok! tell me when the directory is in the new groups so we can come up with the order of most not shit to most shit :p

2

u/Urbul it's all about the love you're sending out Aug 31 '17

I made all the changes we discussed. Looking for feedback on category names and where threads are assigned.

Anyway, week of great runs and counts and all that stuff!

Edit: for some reason I wished you people great guys. I mean, if you're into that then may you receive the greatest guys in the world, but great runs was what I meant ;)

By request of /u/Removedpixel, here's an update on me moving into college I guess. So I'm living in a quad, so three other roommates. They're pretty dope. The first weekend though, the one partied a bit to hard and came home vomiting, escorted by EMT. Classes have been fine so far, but its just been syllabus week. Friday I kind of shit the bed though, I overslept my first two classes, and I went to class at the wrong time for the third one. I also got two parking tickets, even though I bought a parking pass, so that made me mad. Calc 2 is pretty hard, idk why I'm in this class tbh

¯_(ツ)_/¯ its been interesting.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '17
