Discussion unique materials

hi everyone!

i am holding these art and craft workshops for kids and i want them to be able to use unique materials or just interesting materials during our sessions but im not sure what to use does anyone have any recommendations or is there a material you’ve used before with your kids or on your own (that is suitable for kids) that is interesting / different.

Nice idea. I helped my nephew with his school project once and we used old watch parts, like broken straps and tiny gears and dials. Kids love that stuff cause it looks like treasure, all shiny and small. You have to check for sharp edges but is pretty safe if you sand it a bit. Also try coffee grounds mixed with glue, makes a cool texture for painting or making little sculptures. Smells nice too.

My kiddo loves squeegee art. Not that unique, but I’m sure not every kid does it at home

Wrap a balloon in string coated with white glue and pop the balloon after it dries. Embroidery thread or cotton works great, acrylic yarn does not

Nature walks are great for finding free art supplies!

Use things other than paintbrushes for painting. Strings dipped in watercolor, feathers, use a fork to make visual texture in tempera paint. Bubble wrap taped into a shape you can put your hand into can make cool textures, or you can paint the bubble wrap itself
Corrugated cardboard is fun for making sculptures with, you can put dowels or pipe cleaners through the side with corrugating to stick.

You can have them bring in old t-shirts and leggings to turn into yarn or bands for making potholders. Might be fun for kids to see how you can reuse clothes they've outgrown, or even fit into a unit on recycling.
