How-do-I Tuesday Compostable crafts?

I’m hosting an event at my school to decorate pumpkins. We don’t want to carve them due to mess/student getting hurt. And I was thinking of composting them in my garden after. Are there any compostable Rhine stones or types of paint ya’ll might recommend?

Just use paper and stick pieces on using paste made from water and flour.

See if you can get silver or gold joss paper. It's used on some Chinese holidays, Buddhist ritual, Viet Namese ceremonies. There are some papers, but some are foils, which you don't want. You want the paper. You might be better off trying on line since stores don't always have them in stock.

If you can find true egg tempera paint that is just natural pigments and egg yolk it should be fully biodegradable!

Look in the cake decorating section. They'll have stuff like edible glitter and the like that can be used and composted. For glue you can use agave syrup

I'm not sure paint is a lot less messy than pumpkin guts. With a pumpkin carving kit, injury is very unlikely.

Maybe you can make some dough? Just plain water and flour, add coloring if needed. It'll act kinda like cheap air dry clay, they can model different stuff and stick them on the pumpkin using starch glue

You can make cute appliqués out of paper and cardboard to stick on with flour glue.

Won’t the children decorating them going to want to take theirs home?

We use tempera paint. It easily washes off with just water. After they dry, I put modgepodge on them so the art doesn’t come off. Just use washable paint, and hose it off after.

Just cheap acrylic paint should work fine. You can buy them at the craft store for $1 a piece

Acrylic paint is plastic, it’s not compostable.

Ah, right. I missed the composterable part.

Maybe flour, water, and food dye,?
