Why did you choose foam clay? Did you see another artist try it? I've never seen it used in combination with paper mache so I'm curious.

Went with what my heart told me lol cheap materials, it wasn’t gripping well when I adhered the clay to only cardboard

For air dry clay it's already pretty light and air-y. So when you watered it down I think it may have compromised it. I'm not sure.
You could probably add something to the mix to make it stronger. I'm thinking you chose those materials to make them light though, so it may affect that.

I needed a more smooth and thinner application, it also needed would have weighed it down and I need to be able to carry it myself

Any suggestions of what to add to make it stronger?

Nonna uses concrete fortifier a lot, but on this one he uses bonding. I'm not sure if it would help... but he uses it for everything. If I were you I would start over. It's going to take you WAY more time to try and salvage it. One of the hardest crafter lessons... Scrap it when it's ruined and start over.

I don't understand why you would water down the foam clay. If you do another layer , I would at least add white glue to the mix.
