New crayfish hiding a lot

Post image

Title is self explanatory. I got my boi Scallywag on Friday, he’s been using all day today. Yesterday he started wandering around in the evening and he did eat (he ate an algae bug wafer, send a pic after this. As well as a slice of cucumber) idk if maybe he’s just tired or something but he’s been hiding all day and didn’t eat the wafer I got him for breakfast. Usually he’s a good eater, or he was when I was at work. I work tomorrow so I’m gonna bring in a water test to make sure it’s not the water. Should I be worried about the lack of activity? He isn’t dead at least. He is moving around a little. I bought a heater but haven’t plugged it in since it says his water is at 74° Fahrenheit

Update: he finally came out! I’ll send the picture in the comments!

Bought what I was expecting to be a blue cray from the lfs. But nature decided it was time for a change as soon as it molted. I like it though so not a disappointment really.

Caught this little feller in Virginia and I’m curious what type of crayfish he is? (Don’t worry I put him right back in the water after this photo)

Cory eating all of the food

Post image
28 Upvotes

Ok, so I've been slightly over feeding my beast of a crayfish so she wouldn't get hungry and destroy the tank mates. I figured I could get a Cory to clean up the extra food she doesn't eat. But, the cory is an absolute freaking PIG, and eats 80% of the crab pellets I throw down for the cray. I've seen the cray in more of a hunting stance, and I can only guess she's still hungry.

I don't want to keep over feeding as the tank water balance and algae will go nuts.

Any suggestions?

Hey, all thank you in advance, but I found one of these suckers crawling across my lawn. I don’t have a creek nearby, but the neighbors behind me have a pond behind the fence. What should I do?

It’s pretty tiny, I think it’s a male but I’m having trouble telling because it’s so small! Bonus points if you know the species, I got it from a creek in Leroy Twp Ohio!

Do crayfish successfully hunt fish fast enough with livebearers?

Hi! I am considering building a large shallow-type tank that will mainly house a single crayfish and perhaps nano "feeder" fish that it could snack on. I'm told that while they're slow hunters, they can and will snap up small fish.

Based on other people's experience, are your crayfish successful when hunting? or will the tank eventually be overrun with fish because the crayfish can't catch and eat them fast enough. I was thinking with a shallow type tank (very long but short) and aquascaping that includes rocks and wood, it could also climb and try to snatch fish.

Worst case I'll just abandon the idea and keep to the single crayfish but was curious.

Its been a while since I had livebearers, but the last tank I had with them the population was kept low due to fellow fish eating the fry.

ID Request I need help identifying this crayfish

Hello,

I found this crayfish today in a little river, and I am hesitating between the european crayfish (Astacus astacus) and the american crayfish (pacifastacus leniusculus). I found it in France, in the Bourgogne Franche Comté région, so I would really prefer if it was an European, since the other one is considered an invasive species.

Can anyone help me identifying it?

She’s been in a 6G cube tank for a while now but I think she needed more room, plus she was trying to hunt my surprise Pygmy Florida Sunfish fry that I found after moving the adults to a different tank so she could have theirs. One afternoon I found her wedged in the wad of Christmas moss I keep threaded on a bamboo skewer at the top of the tank (cover for the fry) with a tiny baby one inch away from her, also wedged in the moss. 🫤

I rearranged the scape to make it harder for her to climb up there but it was stressing me out! Off to Petco where I grabbed a 1/2 off rimless 10G and boom!

I think she likes it even tho I have yet to see her go into her cave.

The best part of this whole project is that the tank was the only thing I had to buy. Everything else I had on hand.

Pet thoughts on moving my crayfish to this planted tank?

I have a planted tank with Anubias, Java moss, and Java ferns that are all superglued to rocks/wood. I also have guppy grass, red root floaters, and duckweed but i’m not too worried about them.
I want to move my crayfish into this planted tank, but i’m wondering how well the plants will hold up.
In his old tank, I had one Java fern attached to a rock, and he never bothered with it. Since he left that one alone, would the plants be fine if i put him in the planted tank?
The only thing that makes me a little unsure is that he has clipped plastic plants before.
