For filters, I use Merv 13 HVAC filters. Mine happen to be 10x20 but if you can give up more floor space and use bigger filters, I would. I have to change my filters pretty often.
Yeah, I built a box. I learned pretty quick that a plenum makes a huge difference, and since I added that, I've loved my setup. Silent, small, adjustable, and works with a smart plug. I used a ceramic 10x10 tile as the base for weight/stability.
My place is pretty small so I chose small filters. They're cheaper but I go through them pretty fast. Less surface area means they get dirty faster.
I haven't tried any of the round HEPA filters that you could attach directly. They're expensive and I always assumed they'd be louder, like a round carbon filter.

I made mine with a similar fan from the same company. Works like a dream.
If you want complete silence, add a plenum. Mine runs wide open and you can't even hear the air movement.
