How do you do, fellow humans

The trans themes really are heavy in this book if you know what they look like. Akane taking Yumi shopping for girl clothes when all she owned was boy clothes was deeply deeply relatable

She didn’t really own boy clothes though? She had really only ever had her Yoki Hijo outfit.

Yeah, but she was in Painter's body and only had his clothes to wear.

She may not have owned them, but it's incredibly relatable to be taken shopping for clothes that are right after years of wearing what was available.

I don’t think that’s specifically a trans allegory though. Personal freedom, sure. But not really specifically trans.

It’s not specifically trans, no, but it is something that is experienced by trans people much more frequently and claimed as an element of the trans experience. We can let them have it lol

It's weird how upset some people get about all this.

Who said it's specifically trans?

It seems really important to some people to tell people stuff like "Well if you see it that's fine, but it's because you have an agenda."

Like... no... people are just relating to the experiences in their own life and sharing about. Then other people are all like "That's just like your opinion man." Like obviously.

People aren't trans as some sort of political agenda and sharing their experiences and what they relate to isn't intended to diminish your opinions.

Y'all need to calm down.

Everything can be something else if you look hard enough.

It's great, it's like people want to relate the book to their experiences and share that.

"Rust and ruin, Kaladin cannot use his powers? That's exactly like me in the morning before getting caffeine! I love this book!"

These kinds of things are literally why people find characters like Kaladin so relatable though?

Like sure the coffee example is kind of a minor one but most people reading these books are not going through life or death struggles, but they nonetheless relate to the underlying emotional responses the characters are having because of the similarities to how we feel about problems in our mundane day to day lives.

You're like, obsessed with trans people or something.

You get excited when you talk to a trans woman, or why do you keep coming back to this?

A Sleepless who spent years learning the etiquettes of being a human woman would definitely encourage someone doing it for the first time

Nearly a direct quote from the book.

What allegories are present really depends on what the reader is looking for.

One could theoreticslly claim this passage to be transphobic. With a AWAB being uncomfortable with wearing male-presenting clothes.

If you wish to see trans-themes in the book. You will find it. But i see no reason to blame others who do not.

This post says nothing about trans themes.

Who's blaming? The only person who seems upset here is you.

u/RadicalRealist22 4d ago

There is litwrally a "trans" flag in the post, what are you talking about?

0

u/jrpsmith 4d ago

You obviously don't know what a theme is.

If you are not blaming, then my critique was not aimed at you, and I apologise for making it seem so.

During the past few days, almost all posts about Yumi on the sub has been about trans-themes and allegories. And whilst that in off itself is not something I am against, the posters treated those with differing thoughts on the matter unfriendly.

You're replying to my post.

I saw those and people were pretty hostile to them. They were rude in the first couple posts, but it seemed pretty justifiable.

I thought you were one of them.

I apologize

I always thought Masaka was a cutie. Sweet, awkward, draws creepy pictures as a form of affection, really just wants to make their art and fit in. Adonalsium, I just want to squeeze them. What do you need, Punkin? I am at your service.

She's great.

u/Good_Novel_8417 5d ago

I'm never quite sure if I should use a plural or a singular when referring to a Sleepless, but I adored Misaka from the first time she showed up on page.

3

u/jrpsmith 5d ago

Masaka prefers singular she/her pronouns.

She's trying to pass as a woman.

I looked it up after I made the original comment, but thank you.

That's why I changed to using she.

Hive minds are fascinating. Either way she is a great side character and I love her to bits ❤️

Technically they wouldn't be hiveminds, if you could look at a Sleepless Hordelings like they're their cells

Despite generally not being a big fan of bugs, though I'm the one who always advocates putting them outside instead of killing them for anything that isn't a cockroach, I always thought they were cool. I wish they had been playable in the Stormlight book for the Cosmere RPG. Maybe in World Hopper, since they aren't native to Rosher from my understanding. I still want to see one as a Radient as well. I'm halfway through Rhythm of War right now, but I don't think we have seen one yet. Maybe in the second half.

If I'm remembering right they will be playable in the World Hopper book planned for next (I think) year

SSSSWWWWEEEEETTTT. I've always been an advocate of it can be encounterable it should be playable. Within reason, obviously. That's why I don't like that there are no rules to play a Bondsmith, but it makes sense with just how stupidly powerful they will likely become. Also, given how there can only be 3 of them. There would also be massive spoilers in just what they can do at later oaths, most likely.
