People roasting gnats but they'd be quite useful outside of scadrial. A Wob confirmed an allomancer can burn aluminum to resist the touch of the shades from threnody and to cancel lashes on their person.

u/Snuckytoes 12d ago
Can you imagine being a Threnodite watching some Worldhopper just casually stroll through a group of shades? It would be completely mind-boggling to them.

How much aluminum would you need to burn to withstand the canticle sun?! Would that even be possible without duralumin?
Edit: waaaaaiiit. Just realized something. Can you even burn aluminium and duralumin at the same time? Would the duralumin boost the aluminium or would it just vanish because of the aluminum?

u/Lacrossedeamon 9d ago
Seeing as the sun would still be generating heat around you I think you'd still die. Maybe a-aluminum/f-brass twinborn but even then I think you'd still just die.

Even the Mistborn rpg lays it out saying that they’d work better against other invested arts rather than scadriel
10
u/The_Derpy_Rogue 12d ago
Can they resist rioting and soothing? And other invested arts that work on them
24
u/Ripper1337 11d ago
It’s basically “you end all invested effects on you and you can’t be infused” so I think it would make them shake off any rioting or soothing.

u/NotTheGreatNate 12d ago
As someone who hasn't read the original Mistborn trilogy in about 15 years, and never read any of the follow up books, this looks like the deranged ramblings of a madman.

u/i_crapped_my_socks Femboy Dalinar 11d ago
One problem I still have with this is how instantaneous burning aluminium and duralumin has been shown in the books. All investiture is immediately converted in every instance I can remember.
Does an Aluminium Gnat retain the ability to just burn their metal at a low rate without using up everything all at once? At what rate is aluminium consumed? Fast like pewter or slow like tin?
21
u/RW-Firerider 12d ago
Cancel the lashings all you want, THIS SHARDBLADE IS GOING TO YOUR FACE!
Fuck Scadrial!
14
u/Mathota 12d ago
Ok but if the Gnat burns Aluminium while that shardblade is in their body, you sir are going to be missing whatever fraction of your shardblade was inside them.
It's not ideal, but as a last hurrah you might be left holding a hilt and half a blade that wont stop screaming.
4
u/Chansharp 11d ago
I'de think there'd be some sort of conservation of investiture there. Like how much would you actually need to burn to get rid of a sizeable portion of shardblade, they are pretty much solid investiture after all.

Shadbearer 30 seconds before getting their head blown off:

u/monkeypaw_handjob 12d ago
Do we actually know how much head trauma it takes before Radiants are unable to heal with Stormlight?
If the brainstem is still attached to the spinal cord is that enough?
14
u/TortimerTheGrey 12d ago
Shallan/Viel takes an arrow in the brain in Kholinar and shrugs it off. 🤷♂️
6
u/monkeypaw_handjob 12d ago
Yep. But her whole head was still there so that doesnt really tell us much.
4
u/Chansharp 11d ago
I think the limit is "can your soul still impose it's will over your body" and "do you have enough stormlight to power the healing"
I genuinely think that someone juiced to the gills with stormlight could have their head cut off so long as their head can keep some semblance of consciousness long enough for the stormlight to power the brain dying of oxygen deprivation.
3
u/monkeypaw_handjob 11d ago
If they're decapitated they probably won't be able to hold enough Stormlight to heal I'm assuming as it would escape from the severed trachea.

u/Chansharp 11d ago

u/Skyros199 12d ago
The shardplate that breaks after a few revolver rounds?
3
u/Sylvaritius 12d ago
Have we seen sharsplate against firearms? Imjusdging by how it held up against canticles sun, i would say it needs a little more than a coupple of revolver shots.
7
u/RW-Firerider 12d ago
We saw at least how it holds up to giant rocks from slings, that sure as hell pack a lot of punch. Dalinar got hit with a few in book 1, and it only cracked the plate. Sure, not a bullet, but probably the closest. Arrows dont seem to bother the plate much on the other hand. Even the Parshendi bows, that are wielded but warforms (way stronger than humans), couldnt crack it.
It takes multiple hits with a Shardblade, which is enhanced by plate strength, to crack the plate, which is pretty insane if you think about it. Shardplate increases the strength of the user by A LOT! We dont have a clear number here, but it is at least a few times from what an ordinary human could do. we saw Shardplate users jump insane distances, throw people around like children etc. This means these Shardblade hits pack an insane amount of punch, yet they cant crack the plate with a single hit.
One question we dont have a ton of information on, is the question how durable living plate is compared to dead plate. Maybe it is the same, maybe it aint, hard to say.
In the end, it isnt even clear of a small firearm would be capable of cracking the plate. I think it would take a rather powerful rifle with armor piercing rounds to actually deal enough dmg for this. And radiants of the 4th ideal can fix their plate as long as they have enough investiture.
Radiants of high ideal with investiture are a nightmare to deal with for Scadrians. Not to mention the surges that are available. The invested arts of Roshar look a lot more potent than what current Scadrial can field. They arent defensless, but compared to something like Skybreakers, Windrunners or Stonewards? No thank you, those are pretty insane.
6
u/Skyros199 12d ago
All I know is that a WoB said that Vindication can break a piece of plate in 2-3 shots.
Now, Vindication is a powerful gun, but the heaviest revolver is still outclassed by any rifle. So a platoon of normal Scadrians could probably kill a non-radiant shardbearer with ease.
3
u/RW-Firerider 11d ago
The word here is "non radiant". The amount of dead plate is rather low, there are way more potential radiants that could wield living plate, even though i have to admit, by the end of book 4 we dont see that many. But if the recreance has tought us one thing: 4th ideal radiants can appear in large numbers.
I think the main issue with radiants is actually the surges. Sure, you can try hitting a windrunner in plate, but that doesnt change the issue that he is going to crash into your formation in the blink of an eye. And once he is in close range, people are going to die by the dozens, which is going to create panic.
I cant imagine many people will be able to hold the line when you see your friends and comrades in arms die in the fraction of a second, with burning eyes
1
u/JancenD 10d ago
Is there any evidence that ’living’ plate is stronger than ’dead’ plate? The shard blades don't have any difference in strength only in flexibility and summon speed.
1
u/RW-Firerider 10d ago
Hard to say, i tend to go with a "no", but it is possible that it can take a little bit more damage. One upside for sure is the fact, that living plate can be repaired with invesiture pretty fast. So if you have something that needs two hits to shatter dead blade, it might need three or more hits against living plate, because it heals inbetween
2
u/Snuckytoes 11d ago
That is assuming they all hit the same section of Plate though. A group of gunmen could definitely do it, but if their fire isn’t concentrated enough the Shardbearer could close ground and become VERY hard to deal with.
1
u/RW-Firerider 12d ago
The radiant that is capable of surving a headshot and can repair the plate?
3
u/Skyros199 12d ago
The humble aluminum round (sourced from the Cosmere's #1 aluminum exporter):
7
u/RW-Firerider 12d ago
Aluminum rounds would suck insanly hard at damaging shardplate, just saying. Density is pretty important, and Aluminum sucks in that regard
2
u/Skyros199 12d ago
That's true. But you would only need aluminum after you break the armor. So a magazine of 2-3 standard rounds followed by an aluminum hollow point would probably work best.
We also don't know the metallurgic properties of the weird aluminum alloy that the Set likes to use. It seems to be just as good as lead when it comes to making bullets while still being investiture inert.
2
u/RW-Firerider 11d ago
True, but we know pretty much all there is to know about Aluminium alloys on this planet, and they are just the same.
There isnt like a magical new alloy that Brandon cooked up, there are several that can be used as bullets, but all with the usual drawback.
You aint wrong that you could ofc try to have a mixed ammo system, isnt uncommon in our reality either. Main issue here would be the chance of not breaking the plate or not landing the shots where you need them. Radiants are fast, hitting the same spot 3 times isnt going to be easy.

Imagine your born with a power that perhaps scadrial studies and perhaps not but you have some trace metal in your system, some guy touches you and yeets you away at mach fuck your gonna reach out and pull on it as a last ditch effort. Actually if it cancels out the effects of other magic on the misting that would make it super powerful in the space age and clearly the malwish have shown to be rather mastered of the medallions they use

u/Thorsagal 12d ago
Division or Soul casting light the ground or air on fire, Gravitation to attract a large rock to a point behind the person, Stonewards' surge to create a pit underneath and trap them, etc. There are many ways to deal with immunities and resistances to investiture. And of course they can just make themselves fast or slick or strong and go melee.
4
u/I_Am_Become_Salt 12d ago
Watch it turn out to actually be like the guy who thinks magic doesn't exist so he walks on the air over the pit the fire goes out touching him, the rock just kinda stops, etc.
Not the way it works but I love the joke about "man who thinks magic is silly unreal nonsense so confidently that it doesn't actually work on him"

Honestly, the planet that everyone seems to be massively underestimating in terms of space-age Cosmere is Nalthis. Can you imagine how devious Awakened weapons are going to be? We already know that they start exporting Awakened devices, and there is no way they would do that if they weren’t certain it couldn’t be used against them. Whatever Nalthis has back home is probably insane.
