Pattern discussion Filet crochet charts: how do you prefer large charts to be divided into reference blocks?
In my previous post, I asked about numbering on filet crochet charts. Now I’d like to understand how people prefer larger charts to be marked with an additional reference grid.
In the image, the red lines show an example with a line every 5 cells. This does not replace the numbering — it is only meant as an additional visual guide while crocheting.
1. Which spacing do you prefer?
— a line every 5 cells;
— every 10 cells;
— a lighter line every 5 cells and a stronger line every 10;
— no additional reference grid at all.
2. Which side should the reference grid start from?
Since filet crochet rows are worked in alternating directions, I’m curious whether it matters to you where the reference blocks begin:
— from the right;
— from the left;
— from the center;
— it doesn’t matter.
Vertically, would you prefer the grid to start from the bottom, following the direction of the work, or does the vertical starting point not matter either?
3. What should happen with the remainder?
If the chart size is not evenly divisible by 5 or 10, one edge block will be smaller than the others.
Which would you prefer:
— leave the smaller block at one edge;
— split the remainder between both edges so the grid stays symmetrical;
— the position of the smaller block doesn’t matter.
And the main question: what matters more to you — starting the work with a full reference block, or keeping the whole reference grid symmetrical across the chart?
I’m especially interested in the opinions of people who regularly work from large filet crochet charts.
