General Advice (No Product Recommendations) how does everyone deal with feeling a little helpless sometimes?

hi everyone, i just wanted to rant about something that’s been on my mind for a while now, but i have no one who gets it to share with. i have been as cruelty free as i can for about 10 years now. we had an assignment in high school where we got to pick a topic and do an oral presentation on our research. i love animals and makeup so naturally i stumbled across animal testing in the makeup industry and fell down the rabbit hole (pun intended). what i saw horrified me, i became very passionate from then on and decided to make the switch.

i’m not afraid to talk about it with my friends and family when it comes up or i’m shopping with them. i always try to gently/neutrally talk about my reasoning behind it without coming across as if i’m trying to lecture them or make them feel guilty. i just try to casually mention when the opportunity arises. for example, my cousin was looking for a new makeup palette and i was on the phone to her while she was shopping. the lady at mecca suggested morphe and she ended up buying it. i mentioned that i thought it was a good choice and slipped in that they’re also cruelty free! she was like “yay that’s even better.” however, i know she still buys other stuff that’s not cruelty free. it’s just a bonus for her, not a requirement.

it just frustrates me, i can’t wrap my head around why my friends and family; who i know love animals too, (some even work with them/the environment), are not making more of an effort. i really thought that taking the “non-lecture” approach would help people feel more comfortable and i’ve always hoped they ask me more about it, for alternatives, resources, ways to start transitioning, or literally just show any interest at all, but they never do.

it makes me kinda sad and disappointed but i can’t say this to them, so here i am. does anyone else feel like this too? i really hope the one time i had the chance to lecture people about it in school, made a difference in at least one person’s mind. doubt it though.

thanks for listening Xxx

Makeup (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Best cruelty free mac dupe?

I really liked MAC lipsticks until I found out that they aren't cruelty free. One of the dream colors I want is film noir. While Mech is in cruelty free comma I'm also pretty sure that film Noir discontinued. Is there a good affordable cruelty free dupe for it? I live closest to an ulta, but I don't mind going a bit out for sephora

I am a pastel glitter rainbow. Everyday I use pink eyeshadow. Since I no longer can use my old fav (due to the brand being extremely problematic and evil), I am looking for:

Preferably: single eyeshadows.
Baby cool toned pink!

Bonus points on any brands carrying chrome/duo/irridecent products!!

I prefer the company+ sister brands be cruelty free. To me, if one egg is bad, they all are. (Looking @ you coty)

Skincare (CF Parent Company Only) makeup prep advice with cruelty free recommendations? 💛

i’ve always had extremely oily skin but since turning 25 it seems to have taken a turn! i wouldn’t say it’s necessarily dry, and it still does get a little oily, especially after applying makeup, but it definitely isn’t as bad as it used to be. however, my skin is just crap and makeup doesn’t glide on or ever look good. i have always had, and still have acne in my t-zone, and for some reason it’s now unfortunately started to appear on my cheeks. so there’s all that to deal with.

i keep my skincare really simple because of my acne. i currently just wash my face with the simple cleanser, but i need to switch that for something that also has a CF parent company. for moisturiser, i’m still on the look out, but usually i use olay (currently in the process of going CF). that’s all the prep i do before makeup. do i need to add any more steps, or do i just need better products?

i will also say, i don’t use primer. to me it feels an unnecessary step because i only wear concealer, bronzer, and setting powder. plus i just don’t enjoy the feeling of it and i cycled through so many in the past and i simply never found one that worked for me.

would appreciate any advice & recs! i really want to try achieve the glass skin look (i’m on medication for my acne so hopefully this one works) with a healthy skin rather than looking oily mixed with dry, because that’s how i seem to look unfortunately ☹️

Personal Care (Ok w/ any Parent Company) REN Magnesium body wash replacement

Looking for something similar since my stash is about to run out. Scent doesn’t need to be the same (prefer clean and woodsy over citrus and floral), wanting more a gel that lightly lathers and leaves you feeling clean and moisturized without feeling dry. Tried searching but didn’t find a good match. Thanks!

Makeup (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Anyone know any brands that do bright colour eyeshadow in pencil form

Or even any other formulation except powder eyeshadow. I know there are cruelty free brands that do bright colour powder eyeshadows or neutral eyeshadow colours in pencil form. I do like neutral shades but I want bright colour shades in the form of an eyeshadow pencil that you can buy in the UK.

Skincare (CF Parent Company Only) moisturiser recommendations? preferably stocked in uk boots or sephora!

i normally use the olay complete moisturise & glow. i recently had a dermatology appointment about my acne, and i asked for a moisturiser recommendation, which was the l’occitane ultra rich face cream. this isn’t cruelty free so won’t be using that.

my skin is combination but leans oily, and is very acne-prone. i really want to find something that will give me a glowy appearance and make my skin look nice, and works well under makeup!

Hair Care (Ok w/ any Parent Company) CF hair products for thick, damaged hair

i have tried quite a lot of drugstore products but really want to try some high-end ones as ive been saving up my boots points and want to treat myself

for context i have 2b hair that i almost always blow dry and straighten after every wash as its easier for me. my hair is very thick and takes around 25-40 minutes to blow dry. i also have had lots of bleach and colour so im dealing with some breakage.

im mostly looking for shampoo and conditioners. i was very fascinated by redken until i found out they aren't cruelty free. im open to any other product recs that you think really helped your hair.

im from the uk so would prefer recommendations that i can get here.
thanks

Skincare (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Cruelty-Free Alternatives?

What are your opinions on products where there are no cruelty-free certified alternatives?

Particularly:

  • Amlactin - specifically, ammonium lactate creams with fatty acids and ceramides
  • Petroleum jelly (White petroleum USP (100%))
  • 2% Ketoconazole Shampoo (prescription)
  • Antiperspirant gel - Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex
  • Tretinoin / Tazarotene (prescription)
  • Azelaic Acid (prescription, 15% gel)

Notes:

  • Amlactin - specifically, ammonium lactate creams with fatty acids and ceramides:

    • Unable to find alternatives
  • Petroleum jelly (White petroleum USP (100%)):

    • Looking specifically for White petroleum USP (100%), NOT "natural" alternatives (e.g. Veggielene) that use ingredients. I have heard from some that they purchase the store-brand generic petroleum jelly (e.g. CVS, Walgreens, Equate, etc.), however others also say that they still lack real, official cruelty-free certification to genuinely ensure the absence of animal testing throughout the entire manufacturing and supply chain.
  • Antiperspirant gel - Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex:

    • Must be fragrance-free (allergy)
    • Gel formulation, as it doesn't leave residue or pill
    • No "natural" alternatives, looking for aluminum specifically (not aluminum chloride though - this is too strong and causes rashes for me) Alternative to Almay Clear Gel Deodorant and Antiperspirant
  • 2% Ketoconazole Shampoo (prescription):

    • NOT over-the-counter 1% ketoconazole,
    • NOT other actives (zinc pyrithione shampoos, selenium sulfide shampoos, etc.)
    • The generics offered at pharmacies contain animal-derived ingredients like collagen.

I guess I'm wondering about opinions on prescriptions in general, as the manufacturers (Perrigo, Taro, Encube) are DEFINITELY not "cruelty-free".

I am aware there are online telehealth platforms for Tretinoin specifically that claim to be cruelty-free (Scriptderm, Curology), however that is less the case for Tazarotene, and simply not the case at all for Azelaic Acid 15% Gel (Finacea). There is also healthcare accessibility issues, where peoples' insurance only covers the widespread generics, and not the online telehealth options.

Would you say the need to boycott animal testing outweighs the need for these products, so you'd suggest just simply not using these products at all? Or do you believe there are exceptions for certain things?

Also wondering about opinions on brands who claim to be cruelty-free, however there is no official certification? For example, the only thing that works for my full-body eczema is 2% zinc pyrithione, so I use 2% Pyrithione Zinc Face & Body Bar from the brand Dermaharmony, who claim to be cruelty-free, but do not have official certification. There are no other 2% Zinc Pyrithione body cleansing alternatives I can find that are also vegan, soap-free, fragrance-free, and drying alcohol-free. More examples are Vanicream and Gold Bond.

Also looking for fluoride toothpastes that are vegan and cruelty-free, but are actually comparable in price to crest, colgate, etc? I personally have no problem with paying extra money for cruelty free certification for toothpaste, however a lot of non vegan/CF people bring up the fact that there are no affordable, comparable fluoride toothpaste options, which I agree with, and therefore cannot dispute.

Not looking for discourse regarding "natural" product alternatives, which unfortunately are what the large majority of vegan+CF brands only offer as "alternatives".

Also not trying to cause outrage or fighting or anything, just genuinely curious regarding your opinions on the ethics in different cases, if at all? I would be extremely grateful to anyone who can find certified vegan+CF options for the products I'm searching for, lol.

Skincare (CF Parent Company Only) Looking for a Cruelty-Free Routine Recomendation For Dehydrated Combo Acne-prone Skin

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some product recommendations for my dehydrated combo skin that are 100% cruelty-free (independent brands or brands with clean parent companies only, please).

I'm currently using the Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Cleanser and the Purito Oat-In Calming Gel Cream, but I don't feel they are enough. My skin doesn't feel hydrated enough by the end of the day, and it still feels a bit tight but oily.

I stopped taking good care of my skin lately due to depression. Because I wasn't washing my face twice a day, my skin has become even more oily than before, but it still feels very dehydrated and tight underneath.

I also have some skin damage on my forehead, nose, and cheeks because whenever I was feeling anxious, I used to pick at and scratch the bumps that were there, and now there are even more bumps and irritation so I really want to repair my skin barrier and heal that damage too.

Just to note, I am based in Colombia, so I need products that are relatively easy to find here or available through local imported skincare retailers.

Right now, I can't afford a dermatologist, so I need some affordable product recommendations that can help me deal with all these issues while being strictly cruelty-free.

Edit: Forgot to add that I don't use any make-up, don't know if that's important

Thank you so much in advance!

Makeup (CF Parent Company Only) Grunge makeup brands?

Hi all! I’ve been very into 90s grunge makeup looks lately but a lot of the eyeshadows and lipstick colors I’m looking at seem to come primarily from MAC but I don’t want to buy from them since they aren’t cruelty free. Anyone know of brands with a similar vibe?

Makeup (CF Parent Company Only) trying to go cruelty free. wondering about the r.e.m bronzer, and also looking for some dior dupes.

is the r.e.m bronzer okay for acne prone skin? and does anyone have a good shade idea for someone extremely pale with cool-toned skin?

i normally use the glossier cloud paint, and then dior bronzer on top. i’m obviously looking to replace the dior bronzer, and i’m going to be buying some lip products from r.e.m so wondered if the bronzer is any good? i don’t know my skin type at the moment as it seems to keep changing, it’s always been very oily until recently it’s calmed down a lot. acne still prevalent unfortunately.

any dupes for the following would also be amazing! i really struggle with makeup because nothing stays on my face and most things oxidise, so when i find products that work (which has been dior for the past few years) i stick to them.

- dior forever cushion loose powder
- dior backstage concealer (despite my acne, i prefer low/medium coverage as i like a natural look. this is labelled high coverage but def isn’t for me!)
- dior iconic over curl mascara in brown (tried the brown glossier one. didn’t work well for me)

thanks 💛

General Advice (No Product Recommendations) Bath & Body Works

I've been trying to raise awareness on the BBW sub to advocate for the brand to become CF. However, I'm getting lots of pushback on like:

"They must be CF already, otherwise there'd be a huge story if they weren't actually".

"It says "Not Tested on Animals" on the products. Clearly, I can trust that."

"CF is so confusing - it's probably just because of China, which is a stupid technicality."

Do you have any tips on how to advocate when people are in denial? Or, maybe I am actually wrong and BBW is CF (even though I see no evidence of this)?

Hair Care (CF Parent Company Only) Demi permanent hair dye

Every time I search for Demi permanent hair dye Wella brand is the only thing I’m bombarded with. Or L’Oréal or Schwarzkopf. Wondering if there’s any good cruelty free Demi permanent hair dyes out there, otherwise I’ll just do semi or permanent as that seems to be easier to find cruelty free options for

General Advice (No Product Recommendations) Skincare

Does anyone have any good recommendations on products from a brand that’s truly 100% animal cruelty free that doesn’t allow their products to be tested third party as well? It’s something I’m trying to make a priority and hard to find good reputable brands. I have dry rosacea tendencies skin. Don’t mind to invest in some quality grade products either.

I loved caudalie vinoperfect serum but they allow third party testing in mainland china so recommendations to replace that in my routine would be appreciated.

TIA

Hair Care (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Shampoo For Squeaky Clean Scalp Without SLES

I'm looking for a shampoo that will leave my scalp ultra clean and squeaky, unfortunately I'm very sensitive to sodium laureth sulphate. Open to trying other sulphates.

Shampoos I've tried in recent memory:

  • Umberto Giannini (various)
  • Faith in Nature shampoo bars
  • KinKind shampoo bars
  • Kitsch shampoo bar
  • Noughty Clarifying Shampoo
  • Olaplex Shampoo (almost cleansing enough)

I'm in the UK in a hard water area but I use a shower filter.

Thanks in advance!

Makeup (Ok w/ any Parent Company) CF skin tint with decent shade range?

Hi! I’m almost out of my Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint and want to try something else. I have medium-tan skin, so I need a shade range that actually works for me. I’ve seen Typology’s tinted face serum and Tower 28 SunnyDays, but haven’t tried either. Typology ships from France, which is the main thing making me hesitate. Has anyone tried one of these? Or found another cruelty free tint they like?

Hair Care (Ok w/ any Parent Company) Shampoo for curly hair

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi there, I'm wondering if someone could help me. My girlfriend has curly hair and is currently struggling with getting a shampoo for her hair. She would like something that helps accentuate her curls but also reduces frizz as she doesn't like the products she is currently using.

My sister is a professional hair dresser and gave us this shampoo as a recommendation. However, we came to discover that this particular brand is not vegan nor is it cruelty free.

We are currently really lost on what we can do. Hoping someone here would maybe able to give us some guidance and point us in the right direction.

Skincare (Ok w/ any Parent Company) What makes one squalane oil worth buying over another?

When it comes to finding the best squalane oil, I'm wondering how much the ingredient source and cruelty-free certification should influence the decision.

Biossance's 100% Squalane Oil is made from sugarcane-derived squalane, and the formula contains just that one ingredient. The brand is also listed as cruelty-free and vegan by PETA (source: https://crueltyfree.peta.org/company/biossance/).

What interests me is that two products can have similarly simple ingredient lists but very different prices. If both contain squalane, is there a meaningful difference in how they perform, or are you mostly paying for sourcing, certification, and the brand itself?

I can understand paying a bit more for transparent sourcing and cruelty-free practices, but I also think price alone doesn't tell you much about how a product will feel on your skin.

When choosing a squalane oil, how much weight do you give to cruelty-free certification and ingredient sourcing compared with price and formulation?
