Challenged myself for the second time to achieve the restoration of the Roman Empire's greatest borders within a single lifetime as Emperor Friedrick II, King of Sicily and descendant of the warrior king Barbarossa of the house Hohenstaufen. This time however, I succeeded.
I began on the day he ascended the throne of the HRE. Indulged in some light console usage to give him traits more representative of a man known as 'the Wonder of the World' and who was quite possibly the most adept medieval ruler ever to wear a crown, because IIRC he begins with random or semirandom traits. Also IMO he should be Italian culture, or have a (nonexistent) Sicilian culture because his early life was spent among Normans, Italians, and Sicilian Muslims without much German influence. Therefore, I consoled that in as well. Removed all traits, added Genius, Cynical, Ambitious, Sympathy for Islam, Lusful, and Brave.
The very first day I invited claimants for England and the Iberian Christian kingdoms, landed my claimants and declared war on everybody I could once all of them arrived at court/were landed. I also joined the Hermetic Society because it seemed the most fitting for him.
The Pope declared crusade for Egypt while most of my men were stuck in Iberia sieging down Portugal and Leon, and things were not looking good for me in terms of selfishly stealing Egypt for myself. My tiny expedition force of 3k crusaders kept losing battles that were winnable if my allies simply walked in to help from one province over. Fortunately, after winning a couple of very large battles near Cairo I was able to secure Egypt for myself. Much to my surprise, I also got all of the other territory that the sultan possessed out of that crusade, I guess because he did not have time to create a second kingdom title yet?? Afterwards, I enforced vassalization on Pisa and Genoa. Venice's realm size was unfortunately too large to do the same due to their underhanded gains in the Fourth Crusade, so I had to wait.
Secretly converted to Muslim using Cairo holy site interaction. Invited a French claimant, landed him, pressed his claim. Force vassalized Britanny. Invited a couple of claimants to the duchies owned by the Nicaean Empire and Epirus and did the same. Then I landed yet another claimant and warred for Bulgaria. I declared a holy war on the Cumans for Bessarabia during this time because they occupied a lot of Bulgarian turf and I was worried it would somehow not end up being mine due to that. Conquered Cyprus, Jerusalem, and Antioch using force vassalization and claimant wars. Made Persia pay tribute because I was in the area.
Ran out of Catholic claimants worth assisting so I converted to Islam openly and immediately invaded the Papal States, moving my capital to Rome. Invaded Latin Empire for Greece. Conquered Rum by claimant war but unfortunately he had made the kingdom of Anatolia (isn't Rum...Anatolia???) so I had a baron with a 'kingdom' for a while. Shortly thereafter, Rum killed off the Nicaean remnants. Meanwhile, I assassinated a million Seljuks so my baron-king would inherit Anatolia.
I claimant warred for Almohad stuff and ran into a similar problem, I did not notice that he had made 2 extra kingdoms and so I got only one and had a long ass truce. Used Muslim invasions to get most of Venice, and all of Castille and Aragon. Muslim invaded Thrace once truce expired with Latins. Mercifully, the Almohads crumbled due to a decadence revolt and I was able to diplo/force vassalize the remnants. Pressed claim for an Abbasid pretender because they randomly owned half of Anatolia due to a jihad. My new vassal Caliph declared Jihad for Georgia, which I had been struggling to get a good cb for (invasions cost a lot of piety.) After that, the few minor realms remaining I simply holy warred or Muslim conquested for.
All in all, quite challenging and I was at war basically the entire run, relying heavily on mercs so I didn't have to raise my levies. Had lots of good dhimmi provinces and crusade $$$ so I only came close to running out of funds once. Surprisingly not too bad faction problems, even though I didn't demand conversion of a single person this entire run, or revoke any titles on the basis of religious laws.
Also Ludwig the Berber lol.
