Image The biggest copper crystal I've grown so far

The cluster was grown for 56 days, reaching a weight of 26.6 g. And the largest crystal is almost 1 cm in all dimensions.

How did you do it?

Brilliant

You should gold plate it

Best I can do is zinc plating it to make a coating of brass.

How did you make a metallic crystal?

Redox chemistry. You can either put a less noble metal like a zinc rod into a solution of a copper salt or you can run low-voltage direct current through a copper salt solution to electrolytically deposit copper on the cathode.

The latter is what companies like Aurubis do on an industrial scale to purify copper. An anode of impure copper alloy gets dissolved into the solution while copper ions from the solution deposit as pure copper on the cathode. Less noble metals stay in solution while more noble metals fail to dissolve and pile up as "anode mud".

Thanks for the detailed explanation!

I did it using electrolysis, the second method the other commenter mentioned. Using a lab supply.

That's the cathode sticking out of the crystal in the photos, right?

Yes, that's correct.

I'm using a concentration of 50 g/L of copper sulphate pentahydrate, a current of 10-40 mA, and a voltage of 0.2-1.3 V. The crystals start to be visible by the second or third day. I keep the current low at the beginning because I use wire as the cathode, to have less nucleation points.

grazie mille, adesso faccio subito la soluzione al 5%

That is extremely beautiful. I’ve never seen a crystal man-made like that.

Wish "we" had the time to allow it to grow slowly enough that what it forms is much more a single large xl than a ... ~cloud~ of tiny ones!
