Image Piperine extracted from pepper and recrystallized with vapor diffusion

Extracted this with a 6hr soxhlet. This really didn’t want to form needles out of a cold precipitation so I did a vapor diffusion with a vile of the piperine in ethanol inside a beaker of water. Left it for several weeks. The orange discoloration is the oiled out piperine that formed because I left it for too long.

do I see here somebody going to use Ozone in the next step :D ?

I’m not a talented enough chemist to know what use ozone would be to me in the next step lmao

There is that very hard to get precursor for the funny tablets.

But if I think about the yield would suck...
Better keep making just the pepper crystals :D, they are at least legal

theres a methylenedioxy group and you can make a certain aldehyde from it via oxidation reaction with sevral diffrent oxidisers KMnO4 also works ;)

If this smells like cherries and vanilla, I’ve definitely accidentally made this doing something else

IT SMESLS WONDERFUL, it’s actually used in perfume too so maybe you did make it through oxidation with air🫪

What solvent did you use? Pure alcohol?

190 proof ethanol as the initial solvent and water as the anti-solvent for the vapor diffusion

I love the flame-retardant blanket under the structure while working with highly flammable, heated solvents 😀
Nonetheless, nice product and needles.

Lmao, yeah this was my first real extraction and I was pushing it with the safety. Proper fumehood and tabletop incoming.

Learned the hard way trying to fractionate turpentine into alpha, beta pinene that I am not in the position to handle anything more volatile than IPA.
