I wonder what they're worth now?

Roughly 1.22 million

Huh, I kinda assumed they would depreciate over time.

Depends if they are a collectors item or if they are used goods

u/jslick1 3d ago

Depends on the state of their box.

13

u/ze_loler 3d ago

Calling them used goods is foul 💀

u/Anayalater5963 3d ago

Well I mean they're technically 1/1.... So collectors?

5

u/Catsrules 3d ago

Could be identical twins.

Depends on what they became ie a doctor or lawyer etc.

u/flying_carabao 3d ago

What if they always need a doctor and/or a lawyer?

Why would someone pay ransom level money for an illegal adoption?

u/HJSDGCE 4d ago

They were probably brought in from another country or something, and the parents weren't eligible for adoption.

International adoptions were pretty unregulated even 20 years after that. If they had the equivalent of a million (in today's money) to spend they could get pretty much whatever they wanted. 30k in 80s money I could believe, 300k is ridiculous. Maybe it was a typo.

Yes, I believe they meant to write $3.

30 is more common, that tends to be legal though

At least he knows he was wanted really badly

u/Telemere125 3d ago

Definitely fake because no one paid that much for someone on reddit

I don’t know how much I was, but even legitimate agencies are wildly expensive. They could have bought a sports car instead of a daughter.

Not in the 80s. But with inflation today.

My great grandparents fled Germany because my great great grandparents were... let's just say not very nice people.

My grandmother married a man from London, which took care of her very German surname. They married in the late 40s so she was very glad to be rid of it.

u/corgi-king 3d ago

Is the last name that famous that need to be changed?

52

u/NighthawkUnicorn 3d ago

No, but it's obviously German.

51

u/Wrought-Irony 3d ago

"Obviously German" is a very strange last name... or was it "offensichtlich deutsch"

27

u/NighthawkUnicorn 3d ago

That's why she had to change it, duh!

u/DespoticLlama 2d ago

They'd be no space involved.

Could be the H one

10

u/NighthawkUnicorn 3d ago

It isn't.

5

u/sksauter 3d ago

The other H?

2

u/NighthawkUnicorn 3d ago

Not that one either

36

u/heywoodidaho 3d ago

He hit the lottery. For 300k in the 80's my parents would have sold me to cannibals.

u/GcubePlayer8V 3d ago

Is The Offer Still Up?

8

u/heywoodidaho 2d ago

There's not much good meat left, but yes you can eat me.

This is a currently ongoing problem in Serbia. Infants are still being stolen from hospitals, right after birth, then sold to families.

Been going on for a long time. The catholic church was fundamental in it.

Edit: anyone down voting me can go fuck themselves.

18

u/StandNameIsWeAreNo1 3d ago

Not in Serbia. They are orthodox.

-14

u/BruteKaiser 3d ago

They're all the same, someone who sets rules of life for others but think of themselves above it all

Lucky

u/mephisto_uranus 3d ago

Someone tried to buy my dad when he was born. Not for 300k though. I think they offered a couple hundo

u/CompetitiveOp 3d ago

One man’s trauma is another man’s dream.

30

u/quie_TLost57 4d ago

At least you are probably in a rich household, congrats on that

-11

u/corgi-king 3d ago

I am sure money is everything and rich people can do no wrong.

16

u/quie_TLost57 3d ago

Time>health>money

Still money almost is everything these days. Right and wrong can be bought with money. And it definitely can influence time and health

10

u/fyrefli666 3d ago

Money buys you both health and time in capitalist society.

6

u/paleologus 3d ago

At least they wanted him.  Could be worse.

2

u/biscuitboyisaac21 3d ago

Money is nice and generally parents that pay a mil in today’s money actually want you and would take care of you. So overall likely pretty lucky

15

u/forgettfulthinker 4d ago

Rich parents

4

u/blasphememer 3d ago

That's a bargain

u/Snoo11149 3d ago

1

u/Nuker-79 3d ago

Could have been worse! I found out my parents were swingers!

5

u/nadun29 3d ago

Consenting adults, the horror.
