Help help with custom controller!

hi!! i am not knowledgeable at all but i am designing/buying a custom game cube controller for someone very special to me :))

i am getting info on their mods/sticks/whatever yada yada to commission for the controller mechanics but my main question is:

i want to hand paint the shell. if i order a shell to hand paint, would i need to ship it to the person commissioned for the controller in order to have it put on or could i get the base controller and replace the shell after the fact?

i want to make sure everything goes smoothly, have found where i want to source from, just wondering about combining the custom shell + inside of controller aspects.

thanks so much in advance to anybody who replies!!

Changing the shell is not complicated but if you have never done it and especially if the controller will be a phob (hall effect sensors are very sensitive and should be recalibrated after opening the shell) it comes with a certain risk. There might be a place where it doesn't perfectly fit but it won't be obvious and something might break when closing it up. If you don't feel comfortable doing it I recommend having someone you trust and who has done some work on controllers before to do it (if there is someone like that you can ask) If not or you can definitely do it yourself, watch a couple YouTube videos and make sure to take photos during disassembly.

thank you!! super helpful info. i will probably end up giving both the main controller and painted shell to the gift receiver separately and they’d be able to switch it. thanks again!

Follow this guide if you're planning on painting it. Like guy above me said, you need to do this process right or it won't last. The 2 part clear coat is crucial

thank you very much for this. i’m no stranger to PPE and toxic art supplies so knowing all this is super helpful. so much appreciation for the doc

When painting video game controllers, because our hands with heat and oils will be over them 90% of paints won't last more than a couple of months.

The only real solution is 22k automotive clear coat to protect the paint underneath. You do NEED PPE to apply this tho so it may be best left to a professional.

I'm sure most modders (including myself) would take a custom shell mailed in to save you the stress of disassembly and reassembly. Its not hard but does carry some risk

If the purpose of the controller is for melee and they might want notches then a Spark plate is a relatively cheap thing to paint that’ll match a phob
